Why's this a good ad? Because it's friendly. For a while, I refused to buy a Mac, not because I thought it was worse in any way, but because the spiteful attitude in those ads brought me to dislike Apple enough to ignore actual pros and cons and make a decision based entirely on emotions. Not all people can like "smug", and Microsoft's decision to make a POSITIVE commercial rather than a negative one paid off.
Of course, now I need to have and use both anyway, so it's a moot point for me.
I wouldn't call it copying from Apple. They were the one's making a PC look like a boring, middle age, man who is constantly getting "ill" in their commercials.
They are defending themselves, without having to lower themselves to trash talking Mac's :)

I built my own PC with a quad core processor running at 3.8Ghz, 16GB RAM, Nvidia Quadro 600, and with a liquid cooling system for a total of around $800. I'd like to see apple come out with a better price:perfomance ratio. Also I've tried Mac and Linux and they just weren't for me.

But for the average user like me who just edits for fun at the moment 10,000 for a computer is insane. I rather stick with my $1200 which I have managed to get up to the specs of some of the mid high ranged macs, and I don't really edit out of my hobby but my job is retouching, which windows does just as well as a mac.

After a couple of years of this whole PC and Mac stuff it is getting crazy and annoying. Just face it people, PC doesn't mean Windows. PC and Mac are different types of hardware, not operating systems. Now, since Apple has switched to Intel chips, there really is no difference. A PC doesn't run just one thing. You can run Unix based operating systems like Mac OSX and Linux. Also, Mac and Linux are equally secure because they are based on the same thing. Windows, however, is really insecure.
i would also like to add that, i have successfully attained dualboot Leopard os x 10.5.4 on my quadcore home-build. os x AND windows xp on the same machine. I use windows for gaming, which in all seriousness... the mac suck at.
But i do other stuff on osx, and the funny part is, for a 1500 dollar home-build it performs just as good as a quadcore mac pro that costs $2,949.00, AND i have osx installed on it :))
quite good. but, in all seriousness, osx is safer, more reliable and stable. much less prone to spyware and viruses and much more user friendly. you dont have to be an engineer to make your machine safer and more stable like in windows.
windows gives me a pletora of dialogs to respond to, and restarts after many installations of drivers and software. on osx it just works.
but... i also have a windows machine that i build for about 1500 dollars, it performs like a quadcore mac pro...
Now THAT'S a mature advertisement. Not some Mac Vs PC juvenile mudslinging. PCs fight back not by attacking Macs, but by showing their own good side. Though I've shifted to mostly open source software, I'll continue to use the Windows Operating system for the foreseeable future. Oh and don't go around bashing Vista... XP had it's share of problems when it first came out, and so did Windows 2000, 98, and 95. They all had problems that were eventually fixed.

And second of all, You might find this hard to believe, but my PC is actually more powerful than the standard 2008 model Mac... and my PC was assembled in May 2006! Take that!
Same here, dude, and my PC cost less than 2000$... largely because I received the most expensive part (the video card) as a gift. But the next time I assemble my PC, I'm going to have a budget of 2000 bucks at the least.
Steve, do you realise all that creativity suites also run on PCs? Plus are you aware that PCs are customizable? I haven't gotten an off-the-shelf PC in years, every time my family got one, my computer-savvy dad (he's been working with computers ever since the 1970's) would assemble one. My current one, despite being two years old, is a very capable machine and will likely be for at least another 3 years... by which then I'll assemble a new PC myself... and make it just as powerful.

Although microsoft couldnt clean up its reputation in just three non-seinfeild ads, i strongly believe they are making it right this time. Vista's a performance hog but is the most visually appealing thing to date. I am a PC.
I strongly feel Microsoft is going in the right direction with these new ads. I nice spin off of the "Im a pc/mac" ads. These are ads that may just stick. If people can remember the advertisement and recall the product, then it has succeeded. its about relating to the product. And frankly I think the majority is not the media type computer user, but more like the realistic fisherman, or the jeans designer.
These ads aren't any better than the Seinfeld ads. They still don't tell me anything about Microsoft's products or try to convince me they're better. All this tells me is that lots of people use PCs, but I already knew that.
For the record, I use PCs. I just think it's a stupid ad campaign. Apple still has the upper hand with their ads.
2.- I'm talking about an operating system that always plays with the advantage of having the best performance of hardware, by becoming obsolote macs over 4 years, which is not compatible with any serious development tool, only serves to play in designing and surf the internet, and it's nice. I'm not talking about you, if you can YOU MUST buy what you want. But if you say that mac IS THE BEST, I will answer you that this is not true in certain aspects.
1.- I´m not saying that macos is a bad os. I'm saying that macos platform is so studied that if you get out of a determined margins of time and usability, things begin to happen. Is not true that macos never go crash, i can certify that.
windows also has minimum hardware requirements. you can't run vista on a 386 processor.
windows is cheaper. so are hyundais. and folgers coffee. and imitation crab.
so, because i save my money to invest in a superior product, both by design and usability, i'm immediately elitist? so do you still use the same cell phone you had in 1999 because it works just fine?
do you also prefer alpo dog food to filet mignon because it's cheaper?
I have seen Mac freeze many times, but never "blue screen". And I love the old "no virus claim", yet there is no way to tell if a system is acting up due to a virus without an anti virus. Mac and Windows are both propriety garbage that get sold based on advertising and monopolization and not quality. Linux is cheaper, Linux doesn't crash, Linux doesn't have viruses. And I am not saying this because a commercial told me to, I'm saying this from experience.
2.- Is true that windows is not perfect, but is compatible, more durable and cheaper. I dont need to spend 2000 euros in a well equiped pc, with a interestig graphic card, for example. I know that a pc must be maintained, and i know i will need to reinstall windows, but i know that it will be compatible even if it is old and slow. A mac never will be old and slow, a mac simply ceases to be updatable, when Steve want, and it's over.
1.- Well, i use mac and pc, both are of 2001. Well, the pc works fine with windows 98, i can update all programs and to be honest is not true that i see everyday the blue screen of death. I can install rhinoceros, matlab, autocad,etc. I made a miracle with the mac by updating it to macosX...well,
because of the hardware profile of the mac it cannot be updated more since two years -safari, photoshop, macromedia...-, except the firefox that of course not depends of apple.
why are people so emotionally charged over an OS they don't own? i use XP at work. guess how much crap (anti-virus, firewall, updates, etc.) has to load before i can use my machine. the only reason i don't encounter frequent crashes is because my company's IT dept is constantly patching and pushing mass updates thru the server. listen, the "mac" and "pc" characters are personifications of the operating systems, not representatives of the individual users of the different OS's. the "mac" guy is easy going and doesn't have constant problems. the "pc" guy is always dealing with an internal issue and unable to follow its user's wishes without a driver update, a reboot, or simply a blue-screen-of-death.

these ads miss the point of apple's completely. apple does not stereotype PC users, but the frustrations that come with using windows. i used to "be a PC" when i was younger and into gaming, but there's really no comparison between windows xp/vista and OSx. it's a shame because a lot of people will see this ad and think, "yeah, apple did make fun of me for wearing glasses!" no, apple just thinks it's inexcusable that a multi-billionaire can't hire a team of engineers that can design a decent OS.
1) because the "PC" character is supposed to be easily identified with bill gates by less tech-savvy viewers
2) apple needs to distinguish between the characters so viewers know which represents mac and which PC (how would they do this if they were dressed the same?)

These commercials suck. A bunch of boring, unwashed people spouting that they're PCs while talking about what they wear or that they work in their underpants. What can the computers do besides crash a lot, welcome viruses and hackers and try to be Macs (Windows IS a Mac desktop, which preceded ME, XP, Vista and all the other crappy PC operating systems).

After a couple of years of this whole PC and Mac stuff it is getting crazy and annoying. Just face it people, PC doesn't mean Windows. PC and Mac are different types of hardware, not operating systems. Now, since Apple has switched to Intel chips, there really is no difference. A PC doesn't run just one thing. You can run Unix based operating systems like Mac OSX and Linux. Also, Mac and Linux are equally secure because they are based on the same thing. Windows, however, is really insecure.

i would also like to add that, i have successfully attained dualboot Leopard os x 10.5.4 on my quadcore home-build. os x AND windows xp on the same machine. I use windows for gaming, which in all seriousness... the mac suck at.
But i do other stuff on osx, and the funny part is, for a 1500 dollar home-build it performs just as good as a quadcore mac pro that costs $2,949.00, AND i have osx installed on it :))
Thats something apple wont tell ya...

quite good. but, in all seriousness, osx is safer, more reliable and stable. much less prone to spyware and viruses and much more user friendly. you dont have to be an engineer to make your machine safer and more stable like in windows.
windows gives me a pletora of dialogs to respond to, and restarts after many installations of drivers and software. on osx it just works.
but... i also have a windows machine that i build for about 1500 dollars, it performs like a quadcore mac pro...

Now THAT'S a mature advertisement. Not some Mac Vs PC juvenile mudslinging. PCs fight back not by attacking Macs, but by showing their own good side. Though I've shifted to mostly open source software, I'll continue to use the Windows Operating system for the foreseeable future. Oh and don't go around bashing Vista... XP had it's share of problems when it first came out, and so did Windows 2000, 98, and 95. They all had problems that were eventually fixed.

Steve, do you realise all that creativity suites also run on PCs? Plus are you aware that PCs are customizable? I haven't gotten an off-the-shelf PC in years, every time my family got one, my computer-savvy dad (he's been working with computers ever since the 1970's) would assemble one. My current one, despite being two years old, is a very capable machine and will likely be for at least another 3 years... by which then I'll assemble a new PC myself... and make it just as powerful.

I strongly feel Microsoft is going in the right direction with these new ads. I nice spin off of the "Im a pc/mac" ads. These are ads that may just stick. If people can remember the advertisement and recall the product, then it has succeeded. its about relating to the product. And frankly I think the majority is not the media type computer user, but more like the realistic fisherman, or the jeans designer.

These ads aren't any better than the Seinfeld ads. They still don't tell me anything about Microsoft's products or try to convince me they're better. All this tells me is that lots of people use PCs, but I already knew that.
For the record, I use PCs. I just think it's a stupid ad campaign. Apple still has the upper hand with their ads.

windows also has minimum hardware requirements. you can't run vista on a 386 processor.
windows is cheaper. so are hyundais. and folgers coffee. and imitation crab.

I have seen Mac freeze many times, but never "blue screen". And I love the old "no virus claim", yet there is no way to tell if a system is acting up due to a virus without an anti virus. Mac and Windows are both propriety garbage that get sold based on advertising and monopolization and not quality. Linux is cheaper, Linux doesn't crash, Linux doesn't have viruses. And I am not saying this because a commercial told me to, I'm saying this from experience.

2.- Is true that windows is not perfect, but is compatible, more durable and cheaper. I dont need to spend 2000 euros in a well equiped pc, with a interestig graphic card, for example. I know that a pc must be maintained, and i know i will need to reinstall windows, but i know that it will be compatible even if it is old and slow. A mac never will be old and slow, a mac simply ceases to be updatable, when Steve want, and it's over.
In any case it is best UBUNTU.

1.- Well, i use mac and pc, both are of 2001. Well, the pc works fine with windows 98, i can update all programs and to be honest is not true that i see everyday the blue screen of death. I can install rhinoceros, matlab, autocad,etc. I made a miracle with the mac by updating it to macosX...well,
because of the hardware profile of the mac it cannot be updated more since two years -safari, photoshop, macromedia...-, except the firefox that of course not depends of apple.

why are people so emotionally charged over an OS they don't own? i use XP at work. guess how much crap (anti-virus, firewall, updates, etc.) has to load before i can use my machine. the only reason i don't encounter frequent crashes is because my company's IT dept is constantly patching and pushing mass updates thru the server. PC user? fine. but why deny the issues and problems you face? seriously, what has gates done for you lately that you feel like you need to defend his sub-par product?

listen, the "mac" and "pc" characters are personifications of the operating systems, not representatives of the individual users of the different OS's. the "mac" guy is easy going and doesn't have constant problems. the "pc" guy is always dealing with an internal issue and unable to follow its user's wishes without a driver update, a reboot, or simply a blue-screen-of-death.

these ads miss the point of apple's completely. apple does not stereotype PC users, but the frustrations that come with using windows. i used to "be a PC" when i was younger and into gaming, but there's really no comparison between windows xp/vista and OSx. it's a shame because a lot of people will see this ad and think, "yeah, apple did make fun of me for wearing glasses!" no, apple just thinks it's inexcusable that a multi-billionaire can't hire a team of engineers that can design a decent OS.

2) apple needs to distinguish between the characters so viewers know which represents mac and which PC (how would they do this if they were dressed the same?)
