  • Ralfy just a thought mate why don't you get your Ralfy.com sign and your marks made more professional.maybe even update your current bothy look, not that their's anything wrong but a change can be good and with your current international popularity a more professional ambience probably wouldn't hurt, call me a cheeky bastard if you want but my hearts in the right place.

  • @ralfystuff

ralfy, ive been a whisky drinker for a couple of years, and find your videos informative, But one thing confuses me.

IF a whisky is 46%, its non-chill filtered, BUT if its as high as 45.8% its been chill filtered?

  • @Star12121

at 46%, the 'scotch mist' of non-chillfiltering tends to not be visible ( and supposedly off-putting) ... so bottling at 46% removed the apparent need for chill-filtration.

Whisky tastes better with out chillfiltration. Try it and see !

  • I just bought a bottle of the Talisker 10 year old in Phnom Penh at a little Chinese-run bottle shop. It was $25 US. Cheaper than Duty Free at airports, I wager. Looking forward to trying it when I get back to Vancouver (where it's $75 CAD.) I also bought the Laphroaig 10 year at a convenience store in Cambodia for $24 US ($85 in Vancouver.)

  • For 75$ CAD i go for it very tasty !

  • Hey Ralfy, I really enjoyed The Glenlivet Nadurra. I tried it due to your review giving it 87/100. Two quick questions? Is there a big or little difference between the 10 year old Talisker and the 12 year old? What is the highest grade number you have given a whiskey in your reviews? Thanks and Sláinte.

  • @wesleytaylorviadomus

    a modest (and variable) difference.

  • what about talisker 57° north? is it a 10yo cask strength?

  • @aleksejfk

I think there's more to it than that ! ... but not sure about the age !

  • Bought a bottle a few weeks back here in Canada. I really was disappointed from a price point of view. Enjoyed Highland Pk 12 year better. I know they are a lot different. The Talisker almost tasted like something great that....dunno....spoiled?

  • @Gazeroni

other maltsters are noticing this too !

  • I'm trying to give this malt a chance, but it doesn't want to apply itself :) Ok, there's the peatiness and the alchol presence. It's not as tough as I expected, but it's certainly right for the winter. So what? It's not complex to me. I payed it 31€ versus the 35€ of Caol Ila 12. Caol Ila is reasonable peaty, full of charachter, has got a dynamic evolving taste, a colorful palette fo nuances, a marvellous long finish, extc. Talisker doesn't. I'm very disappointed.

  • 3 minuets .... grew very quickly to 10 minuets...(i am not complaining) i don't have TV anymore so i just tune in to the Ralfy Show!!!!

  • Hi Ralfy, I just received a bottle of Talisker 175 anniversary. How would you compare this one with the excellent 10yo in this review?

  • @ReckyX

Taliskers are increasingly not so good ! however the 175th should be fine, my last taste was fine but not brilliant.

  • @ralfystuff Funny, 'fine but not brilliant' was my first impression also. Especially for a bottle in that pricerange. Not bad though, very smooth but i miss the bite. I'm a bit shocked what you say about the degrading quality of the Taliskers! It's gotten too popular maybe? Thanks for your time.

  • I got a bottle for Christmas, and every time I nose and taste it I get different stuff out of every nosing and tasting. Wierd, but wonderful. Never experienced, anything like this, it is a fun adventurous whisky. I'd venture to say one of the best Quality vs. price whiskys out there.

  • Has anyone ever had 'popeye candy sticks'? Its a candy here in Canada.

That is the main aroma I get from Talisker 10; that and a bonfire with alot of leaves in it.

Awsome whisky, one of my favs.

  • I just started in on a bottle of this and am quite confused. I was expecting peaty smokiness but don't detect any at all. I've also been drinking Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Islay Mist (not at the same time as the Talisker) so maybe they've given me unrealistic expectations.

  • After trying 19 different malts, I thought my favorite everyday sort of whisky would be the Caol Ila 12, but I remembered the Talisker 10 being on my short list. I recently put the two head to head and as much as I love them both, Talisker takes my top spot. In the Ralfy Caol Ila review, he mentions making a blend of 2/3 Talisker and 1/3 Caol Ila. Yes, that works nice. My favorite tasting note on the Talisker is the pepper.

  • There is so much going on in this bottle. Im glad I tried alot of other whiskey before trying the talisker, no way I could have been able to appreciate it. I like this more than my Laga 16

  • Talisker is the King of whiskies, Its what Ian Flemmings character 007 drank in his novels.

Ralfie ...any plans to review Talisker 18 yo?

  • @maxygg

No, I bought a bottle a few years ago and it was very poor indeed.

  • my favourite!

  • It is an awesome dram. I agree 100% with your comments on the nose and taste. Very surprising that Talisker describe the taste as "sweet"!

    Great review - thanks, Ralfy.

  • Ralfy have you considered review Dalmore ?

  • @mozartmythful

    not for a while yet.

  • I will have to disagree with you Mr. Ralfy... It is indeed pretty sweet malt... Don't get me wrong,,, I am not complaining here... One of my favorite bottle...

  • Ralfy, thanks for the quick response. I forgot to mention that Laphroaig 15yr was among my favorites as well.

  • I found your channel about a year ago, which led me to try single malts. Going against suggestions, I started with talisker instead of lighter, less peaty malts. I loved it then and still do. I've tried about 10 diff single malt since and talisker 10 is still my favorite. I live in Florida, US. Can you suggest other affordable peat monsters that would be available in my area? Thanks for the reviews and keep up the great work!

  • @hyge45cal

thanks for watching ! ... and look out for Distillers Edition Talisker, Peaty Benromach, Peated Benriach, Douglas Laing's 'Big Peat', Compass Box Peat Monster and for economy, Black Bottle Blended Scotch.

  • @ralfystuff Affordable Peat Monster? Laphroaig 10 is $40-50, and I think dollar for dollar, it's the most unapologetic peat monster there is. Ardbeg 10 as well.

Ralfy: you going to review Compass Box Peat Monster? Love your reviews man!

Current collection: Lap 10, Lap 10 C.S. (red stripe), Laga 16, Ardbeg 10, Uigeadail, Corry, Alligator, Talisker 10 (your review sold me on the Talisker).

  • @Gregrg7

PeatMonster will be reviewed next year !

  • @hyge45cal Talisker was one of my first too. It came in a sampler I bought when I turned 18. It's still my favorite.

  • "For the sake of research." hahaha

  • Ralfy, if this is a "Winter Warmer" type of Scotch do you have a recommended lineup for other times of year, in that same spirit?

  • @C5Rigzz

in Scotland Winter lasts for twelve months.

  • Anyone remember crystal clear pepsi? We are still human. Color influences our taste, all of us.

I'm not concerned about caramel coloring.

  • @justinhoffma its ok until it starts to affect the taste, and this can even happen in some single malts

  • Nosing Talisker is like smelling the ghost of a fireball, that just destryoed a hard spices' store. Personally I think Talisker is much more rewarding than a 16 Lagavulin, not only because this is the first review I saw and the first single malt I ever tasted. But as far as I know, I'm the only one. Laga-heads put it way ahead of Talisker, and I just can't understand why? I just cannot like it better, and Talisker is what... half the price?

  • I've recently started a journey to discover single malts. It all started because I was looking for something smooth and easy to drink. I've tried about 5 of the main single malt kings and Talisker 10 stands out. Currently my top choice. Glenfeddich a close second and Mccallan 18 in third. However, Mccallan 18 is not practical because of the price. The smokey Talisker 10 on the rocks has my full attention.

  • Recently purchased a bottle of Talisker 10. Love it. Great great bottle.

  • Why do they put caramel in Talisker? People who enjoy peat know enough abouth their whisky and they don't need it. People who buy higher ABV don't need it. People who enjoy Island whisky (sea influence, seaweed, salt) don't need it. It seems like Diageo have decided to put caramel in all their "classic malts". And it's a shame.

  • @vigil12348

we have no choice but to assume E150a/Caramel is in all whiskies (for purely cosmetic, fictitioous reasons) until all producers state clearly on bottle labels that there is not (this makes it legally binding)

Some smaller producers are showing integrity and increasingly using the label to 'inform' the customer, but a number of producers are not !

  • This is the only scotch I've ever tried whose tasting notes include "hints of bacon"

    good stuff.

  • BTW: I spoke to a friend (and ex-colleague) of mine who also loves whisky the other day, and he informed me that every food product which contains E150 (caramel) must state so on the label if it's sold in Germany.

My ex-colleague positively confirmed that Talikser 10 yo contains E150 so you can say that it's no longer a guess but confirmed knowledge.

(Despite the "caramel issue" I still love Talisker 10 yo, it's a delicious "bruiser" as you put it.)

  • would like to see some review on tamdhu.have you tast 1972 on 46%?never tast tamdhu would be happy to hear what you think about them

  • Hi Ralfy, i bought this one today and it's my first smokey whisky, i really like it.

Do you think that, liking this whisky, i should give Islays a try?

  • @tonyiommi87

yes, start with Caol Ila and Ardbeg !

  • Ralfy, I love this one: "I'm gonna have to do that ... [sip sip] .. for the sake of research."

I knew it right from the start: whisky tasting is just an act of altruism in the name of science!

If governments could be convinced of that, maybe they'd stop taxing whisky like crazy. :-)

  • @HappyDay989 You are ironic when you put 'altruism' into this right?

  • "would like to tip"

    Silly mobile phone keyboard.

  • Seen all the reviews, bit would like like to tip the hat as I sip some Talisker during the current blizzard here in New York, NY!

  • @whoijacket stick to your countries whisky's

like the pisswater that is Jack Daniel's

  • @TheVerySpecialThommy

    That was..........random.

  • tasting this whisky is like smoking a fine cigar

  • Oddly I prefer Highland malts, but the Talisker is one of my all time favourites; I don't enjoy it all the time, but it when I do it's like visiting an old friend. Very distinct, and warmer I think than the few Islays I sampled.

  • Ralfy: I too just purchased a bottle of Talisker 18 y.o., only to be completely disappointed by the quality of what is in the bottle. Watery, shy, and not at all unique. Has some kind of off-note in the nose. A big time disappointment. Will not be buying any more Talisker after that experience!

  • First of all congratulations for all the reviews , I learned a lot with them.

I have a couple of questions to ask you, since my mother is going to the USA she'll bring a couple of booze for me, and I was thinking on starting my Scotch collection and knowledge. I was thinking for her to bring a couple of bottles such as the Glenfiddich 12,Glenmorangie 10 and a Highland Park 12. I had thoughts on a Green Label but I thought that more brands would lead me to new experiences.

    Thank you

  • @joaoberardo

When starting with Scotch Whiskies, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie & HP are all good options.

The JW Green Label would be an excellent example of a Blend of Single Malts.

    You would not be dissapointed,

    ... good luck.

  • Ralfy.. Thanks for your excellent reviews.. Hope your house has sold. Beautiful House!!

  • hi again ralfy. can i ask a silly question? what do you mean by "branded whisky"? aren't they all one brand or another? or do you mean several distilleries are owned by one big company?

  • @BozoTheBear

... all spirits are 'brands' but I use the term 'branded' in relation to a spirit which has it's intrinsic quality sacrificed for the sake of marketing and extra profit.

Typical 'branded' whiskies are caramel coloured, 40% vol, chill-filtered and the labels are at best entertianing, at worst ... bullshit !

Non-branded Brands are about respecting the customer with honesty of information, open-ness about ingredients, and fairly priced with quality content.

  • @ralfystuff ah..... thankyou! i had just been wondering about this one. it's amazing that (for example) the caramel issue exists - why is there not some kind of ingredients list? or at least an additives list. if MSG is added to food it has to be stated. oh well... thanks again :)

  • @BozoTheBear

... good point, why claim to be 'premium' and then be coy about additives ?

... only the Industry Worthies can answer that one.

  • hey ralfy, greetings from Bavaria!

First of all, thank you for your videos. Ive nearly seen them all and ive been quite enjoying them. Now my question: Whats your opinion on Talisker Distillers Edition and do you plan to review it? and what about the other Distiller Editions from the more famous Distillers such as Lagavulin or Caol Ila?

  • @camel254

...review of Talisker Distillers Edition arriving shortly and Lagavulin DE covered in review 99.

    ... thanks for the feed-back !

  • Is scotch whiskey suppose to be served cold?

  • @gorak142

... No, a cool room temprature, so don't let it lay in the sun for too long !

  • Awesome job bro, keep the videos going!! Haha.

  • HAHA a note of the bottle number lol, is that not what the buckfast boys do lol

  • Ralfy is Boss -He speaks Truth. -And is charismatic !

Who needs Pyramids or Moon landings ?

-Surely, Whisky is Mankind's greatest achievement !

Talisker is a true favourite -The Distilled Essence of the Howling Wild & Deadly North Atlantic, nothing less !

  • I really like Talisker and haven't had any problems with their whisky, so far. *knocks on wood* I've tried the 18 year old and own the 10 year old and the Distillers Edition Myself. As I prefer peaty whiskies (yeah, I'm a peat head) and whiskies that pack alot of punch, this is one of My favourites. It certainly is worrying to hear that some of you have had bad experiences with this whisky. Makes Me wonder what I will get the next time I buy a bottle of Talisker.

  • Not only Talisker. I recently bought four bottles of Famous Grouse 30 yo, which was on sale in Ontario. Perhaps they know why. I opened three of them, two were excellent, but the other was obviously inferior. A couple of years ago I had a bottle of Lagavulin 16 with defective cork that I had to pour down the drain. I am becoming reticent to spend upwards of $100 for a bottle of scotch not knowing what I will get.

  • @beyond7 .... good point, but if a Malt is bad, complain direct to the Distiller.

    I do !

  • I complained to the Liquor Board, they have their own lab and they will take it from there. Diageo is just a greedy multi billion corp. and the worst part of drinking scotch is that many of these wonderful products touch their hands. But lately I have discovered even better products from independent bottlers, usually they are better priced also.

  • could you explain why you deduct points for caramel addition and chill filtration?

    Thank you.

  • @phospholipasec .... both these procedures are fine for Blended Whiskies, but with Single Malts (especially at the COST of Single Malts) these two influences compromise and reduce the quality of the smell and taste.

So a point off for each !

  • As much as I liked the first bottle, the second one I bought 3 days ago was vile. The worst drink I've ever had. I imagine that's what home made vodka mixed with rubbing alcohol might taste like. I returned it and will never buy this stuff again. I just hope these slips in quality are not a sign of things to come for scotch whisky.

  • .... bad news ! ..... I hope you have e-mailed your complaint to Diageo as they need to know when things are wrong so as to have the chance to acknowledge your problem and rectify it

    .... good luck.

  • Interesting... My wife bought me a 4 miniatures set which included Talisker 10 before Christmas. It was love at first taste!

I then bought a bottle from the Supermarket which was again awesome.

Next bottle from Sainsbury's I bought tasted nothing like Talisker!

Tesco's had it available for £22 and then further discounted it to £17.

Do they and Talisker know something we don't?

    I'm getting pretty worried.

I made a note of the bottle number that was 'bad'.

    It was: L9216CM000 02029507

  • .... not good, ... in fact I am currently returning a bottle of 18yo Talisker to Diageo for Lab: analysis, ... as I was deeply disappointed by the quality.

I advise you to contact Diageo with your complaint as they need to know that customers are aware of problems and will not just 'shrugging-off' a bad buy !!!

  • tasted Macallen and Glenmorangie

    for me they both not my thing and taste to similar and above that macallen is way to overpriced for its taste;

but Talisker... wow, absolutly great, Partytime for the senses!

for me the best bottle i own right now (out of 6)

  • First glass I had, it really tasted amazing. By the second one, I thought it's quite salty. After that, I didn't care.

  • this is my first single malt and i LOVE it!!

  • just bought this in Sainsbury's for £23 (£6 off!)

    Drank 1/4 of it already

I agree this stuff is FANTASTIC!

  • Hey ralfy i love ur reviews but i would like to know which one will u recomment better: a Bunnahabhain 18 or a Talisker 18....thank you and keep it up

  • ... at the moment Bunna 18, ... I am currently complaining to Diageo about a very poor Talisker 18 I bought.

  • Thats interesting you brought that up. I recently bought the 18 year old and it didnt seem to measure up to how I remember it. I thought it was just me. I cant say definitively but it just didnt seem the same. I was expecting more body to it.

  • this particular whisky has been on my radar for sometime now. for the most part, I have been a glenlivet 15 man. in the winter months i tend to drift towards macallan. this year, however, Ive been trying new single malts. today, I purchased Glenmorangie 10. I'll definitely be trying talisker next. thanks ralfy

  • This stuff is my favorite -- even with the CARLMEL.

  • You should review the 19 year old Talisker, I've never had a 'full bodied 19 year old' in my 30s and Talisker is quite good.

  • I meant to say 18 year old....its sad to think that it was maybe the caramel that gave the 18 year old the full bodied which I didnt consider.

  • Talisker 18yo was a good dram but has gone 'flat' recently, so I hope they sort things out as inconsistancy can ruin a reputation.

  • I don't think the 18yo needs caramel for color. And it wouldn't do anything for the body. So enjoy! The reviewer talks about the 10yo which is indeed a shade darker than it should be at that age, so perhaps it does have a tiny amount.

  • Hey Ralfy - I'm just getting into whisky and you're reviews have been an immense help. I have been asked to bring a peated whisky home for the holidays and, as I love my Ardbeg, Talisker, and Laphroiag (all 10 yrs) equally I can't decide - any recommendations?

  • Ardbeg 10yo

    Ardbeg Uigadail

    Laphroaig quater cask

    Caol Ila 12yo

    Longrow 10yo

    Talisker 10yo

    .... hope this helps.

  • Those three all are wonderful. Pick the lucky bottle blindfolded. =) You can`t go wrong with any of them.

  • First tasted it at the distillery on holiday, drinking it right now~

  • what does he have in the blue bottles and dropper bottles? :|

  • .... one blue bottle is empty, the other contains a whisky liqueur experiment. The dropper bottle contains caramel (E150a)

    .... cheers!

  • This may not be one for newcomers to start with. I've frightened people off of scotch with Talisker. Its very strong tasting. But once you have it, every thing else will taste weak.

The Best for me: Ardbeg, Talisker, McCarthy, Laphroig.

  • great review. this is such a rare tasting whisky. it is so unique and tasty. to me, it almost doesn't taste like whisky. so rich, oily, smokey, and salty. i tend to reach for it more often than i imagined i would. when you want something a little different, look no further. if you like olives and rich greek food, and whisky, this is a delightful treat. a little goes a long way, and you will taste the finish for an eternity. a true gem. ralfy, your channel has guided me tremendously. thx

  • .... if it tastes and smells OK, that's a start !

Cloudiness can be caused by natural oils in the spirit 'hazing' and is perfectly natural.

So, paler, hazy, but tastes OK !!!

.... has anyone put some water into the bottle ? You may wish to e-mail a photo to Diageo (the producer) if you want to know more.

    Good luck.

  • man, somehow i left my Talisker with its cork in only half way and when i went to drink it some time later, it has gone PALE!

why did this happen? any way to restore it? Is the whisky ruined?

  • gone Pale ? ... ODD!

... who's been diluting your Big 'T' or did you leave it in bright sun-light ?

You will only know if it's ruined by smelling and tasting ! ... if no solution, try e-mailing the Distillery.

    Good luck. .r.

  • yeah its cloudy! i think it tastes and smells like it should, but still...

it was in a cool dry place, no sunlight...

  • Nice to see a Scotsman doing reviews on scotch for a change, you should score on all your reviews. Keep representing, good work.

  • superb Ralfy!!!

  • Great review! Thanks for sharing.

But what do you think about the 18yo Talisker; do you find it better then the 10yo?

  • ......... not better, different due to 8 more years of barrel !

........ the 18 is good, so why not invest in a bottle, and once you get to know it, look out your 10 yo and put them together in one glass 50/50 .............. now your blending !

  • Thanks for the reviews! Great for a scotch neophyte like myself. May have to try this bad boy out.

  • You know, it's been a while since I've had Talisker but I'll be up there in July!

    An excellent review there.

  • Thx. It's clear you know a lot about the whiskies. I really enjoy your reviews.
