  • What in the world does this 'emo' shit and whatever people call you and whatever happens in your daily life have to do with Rites of Spring. Just say you love it, spare your 'oh idgaf what people call me im so emo' stories. Jeez.

  • Uhmm... Yeah, anyone wanna change the subject? Fuck it, Rites of Spring> little kids. Easy enough.

  • @ExorciseYourDemons Should be Rites of Spring >>>>>>>> little whiney ass kids

  • Sorry it just annoys me when people call themselves emo and then say they're not a poseur so they automatically think they can get away with it-.-

  • Comment removed

  • ahh i love Rites Of Spring <3 ... YEAH so I'm 'emo' i wud be sort of lying if i said i wasn't scene or emo n that sort of stuff, so yeah I am .... PROBLEM?? :) ... cuz i get enough judgment in school anyway...

  • Omg... :/

  • i tend to think that every a&r manufactured scene is essentially nu metal with a different dress code. ...it usually has to be stupid in order to be popular.

  • To clear this up, this is EMOCORE or EMOTIVE HARDCORE. "EMO" is short for EMOTIVE POST-HARDCORE.

Now we can fucking forget about it. Jesus fucking Christ.

  • @blueamerican54 no we cannot... you know why? because you just said it again... as have maaany other people, and the comments about it never end xD

  • @pumga I don't understand how it's so goddamn important in the first place. If they really liked the music, they wouldn't care what the genre is.

  • @blueamerican54 not much we can do about it. well, i could disable the comments, but whatever...

  • @blueamerican54

Well, after all I really give a damn about how its called. It sounds great no matter what genre it is.

  • @blueamerican54 what are you talking about? rites of spring were one of the first emo bands... emo isn't short for post-hardcore. emo is short for all emotional hardcore.

  • This is what actual emo is, emotive hardcore. Major record label paid no attention to anythin like they always do and started labeling bands like MCR and Fall Out Boy as being emo eventhough they arent.

  • I don't even see how this is considered emo? Sounds like straight punk to me

  • @ThatCRSBeat cuz your not suicidal enuff to get it!!!!!111

  • @pumga I suppose that's all it is lol

  • @ThatCRSBeat emo used to be based on lyrical content, not sound. It also was a derogatory term... and probably still should be now that it's a bunch of guys with eyeliner on talking about how sad they are.

  • @ThatCRSBeat true that, man, its all the same kaboodle to me, emo screamo, hardcore, i just say "i want to listen to punk rock."

  • @ThatCRSBeat Because this is what emo ACTUALLY was before it shifted into a shitty stereotype.

  • @ThatCRSBeat the lyrics are based on emotion. listen to this song! so emotional!

  • @ThatCRSBeat

because, its not. Emo was never really a style a music.

  • @ThatCRSBeat uh, yeah. emo IS punk. it's not whatever fashiony shit media's been making it out to be.

  • This is emo, emotive hardcore.

  • Why give a fuck about genres? FUCK YOUR SCENE. Just listen to the god damn music.

  • @loveriamloveless336 gaaah... these anti-genre comments are gettings just as annoying as the ones they criticize...

  • emo? who gives a fuck what it is. good music is good fucking music.

  • @HorribleSexyDrunk people actually do....mexico 2008? several hundred emokids beaten, raped and had to go to hospital? People forget their roots, emo is a punk genre...but the old school punkers shoved us away, and now they cut our bangs like people used to do with the punkers mowhawk in 80s and 90s...it's just...sad....ignorance

  • @ScandinavianEmokid what are you talking about...?

  • @HorribleSexyDrunk that people actually care about genres

  • @ScandinavianEmokid i dont think that has much to do with the genre, at least not the actual emo thing... what those people cant stand is the image of the "scene". and that is admittedly quite ridiculous, although beating them up for it goes too far.

  • @pumga the image? you mean like the "stereotypical" view of the emo culture or the "style" which is just a lighter version of goth? cause i don't understand that, the punkers/goths/metalheads tried to justify it by saying we stole their style when it was them that pushed us away, after all emo is punk, not real punk but sort of

  • @ScandinavianEmokid well, then its pretty much as i thought. while its definitely childish of those people to say you stole their style and beat you up for it, it shows that this is less about the music and the looks are more important to them. which is pathetic as well, but doesnt have much to do with the genre itself.

  • @pumga Agree, i haven't been beaten yet, but people still say "go cut yourself and cry in a corner you worthless wuss, go kill yourself nobody likes you, everyone wants you dead" words like that said repeatedly can cause damage, people should just leave us be, it's non of their business, and it's not that long ago people killed goths for being....goths. Kinda silly actually. I love punk, or some of it, The Distillers and The Casualties and Anti-Flag are quite awesome

  • Emo isn't about being gay or straight, it's a fucking view of life!

Just cause they didn't sing about politics doesn't mean they weren't fucking punk!

They were, and are, fucking badass!

  • enough with the sub-genre bullshit... THIS IS FUCKING PUNK!!!!!!

  • @facefacts911 ^This. Thank you. Fuck.

  • Hey i know i said some shit on other Rites of Spring vids but genreas and catagories are for award shows.

  • I hear a bit of the Adicts in there.... anyone else?

  • @cryzen i can def here it too lolz

  • Emotive Hardcore. :)

  • *** Please update the post. **

This is from the self titled album "Rites of Spring" released on vinyl in June, 1985 as Dischord Records #16, this is Side One , Track 5.

The comp was released in1991, gets your facts STR8 before you post.

  • @TheDouglasWinter i know. and somebody else already pointed that out.

however, i will not change the information because its not wrong. i only have the discography "End on End" from 1991, so i uploaded the track from that. and since i used that version, i state it as the source ;)

  • @pumga this was not in 91 i went to there show in 85 and i heard End on End, Drink Deep, and a couple others but i remember asking what the name of the song was

  • @Afrosamurai532 please guys.... just read some of the comments. you are just repeating stuff that has been discussed before ;)

  • People argue about emo and shit... Guy already said that the term "Emo" is retarded. Isn't all music emotional?

  • kids like to consider this emo because they desperately want their bullshit music choices to have some kind of historical backbone.

  • @jorgbaits "Lyrically, they also shifted hardcore into intensely personal realms and, in doing so, are generally considered the first emo band."

Idiot, emo is an offshoot of hardcore.

  • @DrWhiggs "I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me."

    -picciotto

  • @jorgbaits So the singer was unaware he was doing something different.

    Your point?

  • @DrWhiggs My point? an awesome band being recognized for starting one of the most putrid genres of music, thats fucking insulting.

i'm not going to keep fucking bickering with you over youtube.

  • @jorgbaits Too late! And Dashboard Confessional (or whatever) != emo. Both are shitty in their own ways.

And a low rung on the hardcore ladder that couldn't finish a set without breaking down and trashing their instruments isn't what thinking people would call "an awesome band."

  • fuck all you the revolution will cleanse the multidimensional universe of you fucking slags

the descendants kick the rites of springs ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thats the fuckin prophecy nigga

  • @pumga your replies are clever. Great song too, thanks for putting it up.

  • ahhh, guy picciotto, u always know the right words to say to lead to a massive ear-gasm

  • i just love how people call me emo and all i say is´´´i´m huma not music´´ and they cant say anything back.*evil laugh*

  • @katsoja94 I say poseur *evil laugh*

  • come on now kids...

  • Next time someone says i'm emo, i know how to reply. Them: "you're Emo."

Me: "I'm Rites of Spring, an awesome band? Psht, yeah, okay. I'm down with that. They're awesome."

  • Eh, I'm going with the critics on this one. It's good music. There will be always be kids who throw around the term 'emo' to belittle a form of music without actually making valid criticisms. I feel that music should be judged on things like musicianship and lyricism, not what genre it is.

  • @Vicarious99 im way too sad to do it myself.... can you help me?

  • @Vicarious99 and based on your attitude so are you.

  • @Vicarious99 This user is a total douche. He's a homophobe. Go kill yourself.

  • @LibertineObscene the irony would be awesome ^^

  • @Vicarious99 Emos? Lol Emo is a music style, not a clothing style. So fuck up dipshit. Your gay so go fuck yourself and die

  • @razamaer aaah.. "emo" cant be used to insult somebody, but "gay" can? i sense hypocrisy ;)

  • @pumga I love emo music and Don't be a gay basher Cuase i am bisexual and i think gays kick ass xD

  • @Vicarious99 this song is lame but i wouldnt tell someone to kill over it retard

  • @madbar01 I'd kill you for a Klondike Bar. Served.

  • Great song, great band!!

  • Why is everyone always dissing on elmo? Yeah he can't sing very well, but that's because he's A PUPPET!!!!

  • @Stinkypinky220 OMGWTFBBQ he is?

  • we can really hear from the singing that this is not punk. yknow. The witch-like screaming(i'm not saying its bad), the way of singing. but instrumental-wise i think its pretty punk

  • NOT EMO.

  • @TheTannerandBrandon yes emo, sodeal with it!

  • Comment removed

  • The label emo was created by the same assholes who say it's bad to show emotion. Before emo was around, and someone was depressed, people didn't say 'Oh, don't be so emo'. They would ask what was wrong. And then bands and kids started to acknowledge emo as a label. That's when it all went to pot. :/

  • erm, reading the comments i realise that i might get ranted at for this..but due to lack of other words to use, i dont believe this sounds like typical "emo" music. sounds kinda like punk.

  • i think thats because this was one of the first bands to play emo, so i guess its still really close to the "normal" punk.

and you wont get ranted for that... i hope.

  • @pumga original emo was more of a punk offshoot. screamo originally was a heavier version of emo. and to an extent, screamo still is, being very technical and pretty much full screaming. post hardcore, melodic hardcore, metalcrore, etc. also came from hardcore punk. but original emo wasn't pop punk-esque like how it is now. emo=emocore= emotive hardcore

  • @kyle892 yes, i know that. was that comment for someone else? ;)

  • @paulmason7 i was thinkin the same thing. I know what punk sounds like, and this sounds like it

  • how the fuck did this make people cut themselves and have hair over their eyes(create the first emos) ?? anyone

  • thats easy... i did not.

  • it didn't

    those people are

    not like this

  • @gonzomc96 stereotypes idiot! it's all about the music. not all "emos" cut themselves and where their hair over their eyes, pop culture has twisted what was amazing music into a dumb trend that people follow to fit in.... ugh i hate mainstream

  • @gonzomc96 it didnt. the medias views on it did.

  • Shut up about the fucking emo and just enjoy the fucking music, mates. :)

  • Of course I can properly express my self, but, pissing people off, well, that is something we are all guilty of,my friend. You see,you in fact have pissed me off,and I am sure,by the way you act so self righteous and "smarmy" I'm not the only one. ;)

  • dont you think talking to others in a non offending way is the basic of any discussion? if you dont even give people a chance, whats the point in telling them your opinion? why do you do that if you dont even want an answer?

or would you be satisfied if i didnt act "self righteous" and just told you "LOL you suck this band is awsum!!!11" ? that wouldnt get us anywhere, but perhaps you dont even want to get anywhere with this...

  • I would safely say that we are building quite the foundation for an interesting discussion, well it definitely intrigues me so that's all that matters.and when you say "my opinion" well, honey, that's the one that that I would be partial to the most.Hence the word MY!

  • Not only do I love Rites of Spring, but,I really don't know why you think I don't.I just made some comments on the whole EMO thing, whoever embraces this band while leaving the term out is fine by me,I mean can people just say this is a good band and stop trying to take away from the greatness by using an unholy word?hahaha emo!

  • at least you finally made a point ;) but this has been talked about so many times before... i think it would be better if people just left out words like emo and cared more about the music than what it is called as well, but obviously that wont happen. however that is no reason to make childish comments on youtube. that wont change anything and only annoy some others, especially people like me who like to keep their own comment sections clean.

  • also, i didnt say that you dont like Rites of Spring, i just wanted to give an example of a stupid comment.

  • i tought the real founding father of emo will sounded better than the posers these days...but this music is even GAYer than whatever u called emotive or scene or screamo death core...no offense...

  • if you dont mean to offend, use words that are not offending ;) "gay" hardly describes music...

  • Sorry for that word.. :P

  • That is so funny! It's sooooo GAY! lmfao!

  • would you please grow up?

  • hey then why are you watching it and leaving feedback?

  • for starters "emo" music is just stupid and stereotypical, think about, if you're a musican you're going to be emotional and passionate about what you do. so intern every musician is an "emo". "emo" doesnt mean a thing :)

  • i wonder why so many people dont understand that.

i also wonder why there's people like you who have to point it out again and again :D

  • emotional hardcore

  • 2this is punk !emotional hardcore because yer cryin,ya pansy twat! you don't know the first thing about punk, but bein one in a jailhouse, you hot topic baby!

  • jerk...

  • Whoa man. Get off the speed.

Also I want to bomb the malls not congregate in them.

  • okaaay!

  • Pumga, what the hell r u? the fucking youtube police? U crack me up!

  • and what are you? some annoying idiot who cant express his opinion properly and has to piss other people off?

if you have something meaningfull to say, surely you can do so without being a dick to everyone else.

  • @orb2150tx je suis desole mate but you are a cunt

  • Rites of Spring is emotive hardcore, and offshoot of post hardcore, an offshoot of hardcore punk. Deal with it.

  • oh really?so when Rites first started the band they were like, let's be an emoTIVE band, let's start a trend and have everyone analyze this music the n put it in a category.

    NOPE!

they were like, let's rock the fuck out!

I really don't think they take any kind of Emo credit,so go to the mall and buy some over priced tight pants cut yerself call yer girl up cry about life and go suck some together!

  • what the fucking hell is wrong with you?!

Rites of Spring didnt call themselves emo but that doesnt mean that the genre doesnt exist. if people need the word to name that kind of music, let them have it. we all know its stupid because most music (at least the good stuff) is emotional. so what of it? the word metal sounds just as inappropriate when you connect it to music but nobody cares about that.

you can just call it punk if you want to... but stop wasting time writing unnecessary shit here.

  • Well, they're arguably the progenitors of the genre, so of course they didn't say "Let's start an emotive hardcore band", so I'll give you the "Let's rock the fuck out!" thing. And I prefer to go to Salvation Army to buy my underpriced clothes and listen to my progressive rock music. I listen to them out of the post hardcore links, not any "emo" links.

  • <333333

  • it's funny, on every rites of spring song, people argue about emo lol

  • its the first law of musical elitism... discuss the genre xD

  • true, true

  • @SchiamaShade1 they do because everybody says rites of spring was one of the first emo bands.

  • I've just discovered this old-school emo stuff, and I'm wondering what seperates this from 80s-90s punk? I've read that emo was just more melodic, but this doesn't sound much more melodic to me. Maybe you have to have an ear for it?

  • probably... im not good at putting bands in genres either, sometimes i find the differences between two bands in one genre bigger than the differences between two bands from different directions :P

  • Both evolved from the hardcore scene. Emo originally stood for "emotional hardcore", entailing a very similar sound, but with lyrics based more on personal emotional experience than political opinions or social commentary. While the sounds evolved later on, the only original difference was lyrical content. So emo became more melodic, but the original stuff like this was not. That said, I don't like labeling so specifically. If you like it, great, if not, thts fine too.

  • These guys took the hardcore punk of the 80's and gave it more introspective and emotional lyrics.

  • got to be honest this sounds more like punk than emo to me but still love it

  • The only good kind of emo... I wish emo didnt suck these days...

  • come on, there are still some really good bands. they might not play the old style, but theres good stuff out there...

  • Finally an old school fan who likes the news stuff! Yeah there's shitty bands(I'm looking at CIWWAF and The Maine) but there's some really good bands like Brand New, Say Anything, Glassjaw, Thursday etc.

  • i like some of the new bands too and i love old school emo bands like this.

  • someone called me emo the other day. im like " how the hell am i emotive hardcore?"

  • yeah i dont get it either...

my english teacher said something about depression today and pointed in my direction. i dont think he did that on purpose but hey, i wear a black tshirt today so i fulfill the stereotype! :)

  • Classic emo LOve it!

  • I just know i like this sond is all, emo or not i don't really give one.

  • thats the spirit xD

  • Like it or not, this is emo. Which was born from punk, which was born from rock which was born from blues which was born from black slave music which was born from pure emotion. It all comes full circle and it's all music, so who really cares right?

  • stop trying to simplify things it doesn't help.

  • emotion is something that can blind you.

  • ORLY?!

  • uh..

    ..anon..?

  • @metal1985

    THAT.IS.SO.FUCKING.TRUE.

  • lol... it's funny how people call rites of spring emo, Rites of spring was an emotional hardcore band (meaning it's hardcore + emotional lyrics) and Guy said himself he has nothing to do with emo, and his band was never emo.

So emo twats, shut the hell up if you don't know shit.

  • picciotto didnt like the word... so what? people want to give that kind of music a more specific name, whats the problem?

i would be more concerned about modern bands taking the term emo and bastardizing it to make a profit...

  • Picciotto himself doesn't recognize the attribution of having "created" emo. When asked about it in an interview his response was, "I've never recognized "emo" as a genre of music. I always thought it was the most retarded term ever. I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it

  • But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it's so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren't emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn't make any sense to me."

  • if you go with that argument, not one single genre name makes sense. take "rock" for example: the bands dont use rocks as instruments... they dont sing about rocks... but people dont seem to be angry about it.

  • That couldn't be more retarded... Honestly.

  • well, then i dont know what to say...

call it punk, nobody will hate you. but emo has been used for a few years, so.. well... you cant do much against it anymore, as stupid as it may be.

  • you are aaaaall welcome..

  • watz ur def ef emo? this amaze meh

  • wut? :D

  • love it

  • how come nobody is arguing about fall out boy? you guys used to love arguing about fall out boy!!!!!

  • maybe it became boring?

the world screams for a new crappy mainstream pop act claiming to be emo! :D

  • They dont call themselves emo. their not that bad but............ all the same. people are retarted and changed the definition of emo

  • yeah that was the good old time when emo was good...

  • what do you mean? theres still good emo today =P

  • Oldschool Emo punk was awesome.

It wasn't a brand. It wasn't a product. It was just a message.

  • exactly

  • moar liek AWESUM amirite?

  • More like punk IMO...

  • true pure emocore...I love it....just love it...but I do like modern emo but I drift off with this

  • Minor Threat was against wearing bell bottoms!

They only drank water and, ate potato chips.

They enjoyed playing video games and, slam danced to the television.

    They were real, man!

  • Minor Threat is hardcore punk you stupid ass hole.dont compare them to emo.ian macaye did later form fugazi who was kind of the start of emo,but it by no means is what emo is now adays.emo then was much closer to hardcore punk

  • oh come on dude... thats exactly the kind of emo were talking about, the old, true, pure, whatever type of emo. and just because macaye didnt like the term emo, it doesnt mean we cant use it to name a genre. its just a word, and if you use it right, its perfectly legit.

  • why is rites of spring emo and bands like minor threat not? i don't understand the term.
