Incase no one knows, they charged up the hill to finish the "Main Objective" by Conquering that hill at ANY costs which was an order from their commanding officer. So yes they we willing to die for it, the banner was NOT in fact a beacon for the drop pods to come for whoever said that :D

Oh and incase anyones wondering, supposedly their objective was to make contact with hostiles as part of a recon skirmish unit, then signal back when they had found a region cleared well enough to land without their men getting chopped up as soon as they hit the ground. I like the ending, its honourable. Battle your ass all the way up, with little chance of survival for the imperium and the Emperor. True Warhammer style.

Some say its stupid to charge a wave when your at the bottom of the hill, which is true in many circumstances, but the angels of death must push on to the top of that hill as part of their objective. yes they could have stayed and lasted a bit longer, and eventually run out of ammo, but due to the orks sheer numbers they would lose. The officer sacrificed his platoon to place the flag at the top, thus to signal to the drop ships to land. they had secured that position and made contact with ORKZ.

@punisherstelios Dark Crusade definately makes the Space Marines and the Imperial Guard look questionable at best, and downright tyrannical and heartless at worst.

To be honest, Dark Crusade puts the Tau in the best light. Then possible Eldar. Though the Imperial Guard's always been my love. Seeing as they're just normal tough guys, compared to all these monstres daemons, aliens and super-soldiers.

@50033836 haha Imperial Guard are no such thing as Tough Guys.They have sv+5 and they suck at close combat as much as in the shooting.Of course they have THE best heavy support and their Elites are ok but COME ON!!! their troopers suck.I have an Ork army and I know how it is to fire with 30 boyz and only 3 hit the enemy.

The Banner also bares the Blood Ravens' heraldry. Also, Winter Assault is currently the only Dawn of War game that has not featured the Blood Ravens chapter as the Campaign Space Marines. In Winter Assault it was the Ultramarines featured in the campaign.

You never leave cover to charge uphill in hand to hand combat, especially when you have superior guns, the enemy's tactics stress laying down lead over aiming, the enemy is known for being well-trained in close combat, and they're stupid enough to keep charging. His raising the flag at the end is the ultimate empty gesture. They've lost.

No, they were charging because they needed reinforcements, and the only way to get them was to set up the beacon that is the Blood Raven flag on a supply point. Their only way to the supply point was through the orks. So what do they do? They charge, that's what.
