Campiest most epic 7 mins ever!!! Everything from the cheesy "yahhs!!!!!" To the trolls turning into blobs to the guy being catapulted to the guy in the tacky skull mask to the disgusting sounds fx at 4:59 to the awesome stop motion dragon's head exploding to the talking goat!!!! This really is a great sequence from a great movie I watched endlessly as a kid. Great exitement and fantasy storytelling. There's a bit of everything. Not to mention the stop motion is superb.

@bud389 Years before CGI? You should do a little research. Tron and The Last Starfighter came out years before Willow and utilized extensive CGI. ILM used CGI for the glass knight scene in Young Sherlock Holmes. ILM would use CGI just a year after Willow on James Cameron's The Abyss. Going further back, computer animation was also featured in Westworld from 1973.

@bud389 I don't what you mean by "true". If you mean the dominant tool used to create visual effects in movies, then yes, CGI was the norm by the early 90's. But CGI had been used in films for a couple of decades prior. Here is a timeline of movies utilizing CGI

Dennis Muren allowed a small team of us to try to get some of those shots using the Dynamation method. It worked – we got each of our shots done in five days, versus four weeks for each composite in the optical department — and George Lucas was happy. We used 35mm VistaVision plates and composited down to 4 perf 35mm format using anamorphic lenses.

I love that dragon design, it's hideous and terrifying. But that makes it work fantastically well.

I mean that thing scared me as a kid, which was when I first saw this movie. But that also made it VERY memorable.
