@thatlazyslacker It would be interesting to know the lineage of this shark. At the end of the Great Dying about 65,000,000 years ago , there were no animals like sea reptiles/seals/polar bears/whales/penguins in the world, except for turtles; no others with an air-breating but seagoing way of life. But there were always, it seems, large cephalopods in deep waters. It would not be surprising if sleeper sharks existed long before the dinosaurs passed away.
@thatlazyslacker From an old wildlife book I had. It mentioned that the species was very sluggish, and that most likely there have been no attacks on humans because the shark is in an environment where humans do not normally go. There is a good article on the closely related Pacific Sleeper Shark that also eats the Giant Squid but it is controversial as to if they kill healthy ones. I think these sharks might be able to become very energetic if they make up their minds to eat something.
Is it a filter-feeder like the whale-shark, or does it eat larger animals like other sharks? Just asking because he doesn't seem to mind people around him. He looks intimidating...
@thatlazyslacker A Greenland Shark was once caught with an entire, antlerless reindeer in its stomach. A related form, the Southern Sleeper Shark, will prey on the Giant Squid.
@thatlazyslacker I forgot; the article is on Wikipedia under the title Pacific Sleeper Shark. Very cold water and deep water sharks are fascinating. It is a whole world apart from the one we know. Plug in this on You Tube Search line:
Unbelievable giant shark encounter- The Abyss- BBC Wildlife
And see how the otherwise poisonous-to-humans Greenland Shark meat gets prepared for consumption. But most people cannot handle eating it. If I am ever in Iceland, I might someday try it, but only the tiniest bite to see if I will toss my cookies or not first.
@Albacorewing So they ferment the greenland shark for months... I can see why it would smell bad! I'd try it too, but maybe it's like sushi; it's not for everyone! I think whale sharks develop some kind of poison on their bodies too, yet this shark seems to take the cake!
@thatlazyslacker Go that GEERG site. Its is interesting. It is open to question if it is a scavenger or not. But a horse was once found in one, or at least part of a horse.
good video! but what's the point of the lasers of your camera? is it for special autofocus??

Isn't this the same shark from monster quest? Lol in my perspective the passive shark was going to shallow waters to lead the divers back to land
What if it was that smart that it knew about humans and decided to help

Are they scavengers or predators? Do they actively hunt seals, walrus and deer or do they wait until their prey is drowned? They seem sluggish to me.
