its really simple. Chaka first, Whitney second. Without Chaka's ORIGINAL there'd be no Whitney COVER. And um....based on TODAY? Whitney' really AINT what she used to be. Chaka, on the other hand, is still going strong.
You Must Be Out Of Your Rabid Ass Mind! The Original That A & S Wrote Sounded Nothing Like What Chaka Did 2 It,Whitney Merely Tried 2 Mimic Chaka!
Chaka Is A Contralto That Sings In Soprano Range So All Her High Notes Have Bottom 2 Them & They Don't Thin Out & Tail Off At The End Like Whitney's & Others Who Sing In Their Falsettoes To Hit These Same Notes!
Whitney Worships @ The Altar Of Chaka! C.K. Took A Bland Sounding Demo & Turned It To An Exercise In Vocalising That Was Danceable!
Are you out of your mind woman??? Whitney did Chaka a favor and bough ths classic backfrom the 80s into the 90's/2000's! And when Chaka does those notes, they sound like NOISE compared to Whitneys Falsettoes! Whitney SANG this song, you hear me??? she SAAANG this song! Much love to Chaka, but Whitney is the winner here.
Chaka Doesn't Need Any Favors From Whitney! LOL!!! If It Wasn't For Chaka There Would Be No Whitney(As We Know Her Today)LOL!!! Chaka Was Nippys Big Inspiration As A Singer When Nip Was A Teenager!
So Much Of An Influence Clive Had To Deprogram The Chaka Out Of Her So She Could Develop Her Own Style Which Is Basically A Pop Sound Infused With Gospel Runs & Trills!
Not Knocking Nip Luv Her But She Only Impresses Those Those Who Don't Know Music For Real & Are Wowed By The Superficial!!!
Yes Whitney was influenced by Chaka, but lets get one thing straght, If it werrent for the legendary CISSY HOUSTON (Whitneys Mother), then there WOULD NOT be any Whitney. It was HER MOTHER that influenced her to sing, in the chior which helped PAVE THE WAY to her becoming a success, And futhermore, I think it is you who does not know good music beause if you did, then you would know that chaka screams her upper level vocals which makes her sound horse and dry.
While I respect your opinion, I disagree. Whitney stuck too close to Chaka's vocal arrangement for it to be considered a Whitney song. She didn't add anything to the song. In fact, she lists Chaka as the vocal arranger in the credits. She did CHAKA's runs.. The intro is the only difference.
And I disagree about the production. Please keep in mind that there's a 14 year difference and sounds / music had changed drastically. Arif Mardin's lush and masterful arrangement / production shouldn't be compared to C&C's more dance oriented version. The thump of the drum and bass on the Whitney track was repetitive and annoying. Nothing one with a drum machine and synthesizer couldn't accomplish with their home computer. NOTHING compares to Live instrumentation.
Also, I've never heard Whitney sing I'm Every Woman all the way through without the assistance of a track or her background singers. Chaka on the other hand has many fineee "live" performances of the song- on youtube. Check out the Oprah performance. AMAZING andLIVE! Let's agree to disagree. Still love and I really love and appreciate Nippy..
Though I've heard Chakas version many times over the years, listening to it with your facts in mind has opened my eyes (uh, ears) to how good Chaka's version really was. You're right too about Whitney matching Chaka's vocals. I couldn't believe how close the two really were.
Lol! Now Let Me See I've Heard Every Abjective Used For Chaka's Voice But "Hoarse & Dry"! However I Have Heard Whitney Called Whitney "Hoarseton" On Several Occasions B Cuz Of The Hoarse Quality Of Her Voice.
Now About Cissy Influencing Her 2 Sing-Duh! Any1s Mother Who Is Everyones Fave Pick 4 A BG Vocalist & Session Work Would Assume She Was A major Influence-So What? Whitney Admitted This! She Also Admitted In The Same Interview Chaka Was Her Biggest Influence!

I like this mix. However, Chaka's version is better. It's more natural sounding and raw. Love Whitney though.
Latinaicey 4 years ago
Latinaicey,
Chaka's may be more "natural" sounding, but no way is it "better".
Love Chaka, but Whitney's blew it away.
-took it to a whole 'nother level.
[[ wow, didn't realize that "nother" is not a
word, but people use "a whole NOTHER level" all the time! -LOL]]
It's almost an unfair comparison though,
because Whitney's version benefited from great advances in music production.
(Not saying Whitney needed help vocally.
Only referring to the advancement of the music itself).
