@ACMILAN7CL None was better. Both team were (almost) twins: strong half-line, attack that was as scoring as also missing, ridiculous defense. The difference is that the 1970 team won, while the 1982 failed.
No side not even Holland 1974 or Brazil of 1970 reached the heights of that this side did in 1982. The Highlight from this tournament was when Brazil took Scotland to pieces,& when they played Argentina who had in their side the Worlds Greatest player playing for them at the time - Maradona.
The Left foot of the Eder & the brillance of Junior (Brazil's left back) were just the icing on the cake. We will probably will never see a side play with this sheer artistry at World level ever again.

Brazil did not fully abandon jogo bonito after `82. That is a common myth. They had Careca in 86 who I feel if he was healthy they would`ve beaten Italy in Serginho`s plaace. They scored some spectacular goals in `86. Brazil vs France was one of the best games ever. And Tele Santana was still the manager. But `Zico was old and not fully fit in `86. After the loss to France they abandonded jogo bonito fully.
@ObiWanKentucky Somewhat true. They were undoubtedly gifted, and beautiful to watch. Italy exposed their flaw. A win is a win. A lose is a lose. Credit to Italy to find a way.
SCIREA, the great marksman GENTILE,CONTI,TARDELLI,CABRINI,ORIALI,COALOVATI GRAZIANI,ANTOGNONI with his GOAL? the 40 year old ZOFF? and the GOLDEN BOOT WINNER ROSSI.
I think, that they weren´t the best team ever, but I know that they played the most beautiful football I´ve ever seen...... Wonderful goals and memories ....
I cried a lot .... :-( . Can never forget, all the Brasilians had a face like funeral day. It was devastating for us.
Tele Santana , glorious man, he really made the diffrerence in his unique tecnique. He did not have the Cup but he hold the title of the most beautiful futebol ever.
For example Dzoff was much more responsible for the goal of Socrates (by this I don`t underestimate Socrates` s skill) than Valdir Perez was responsible for any of Rossi`s goals.
The first goal : Konti ,Cabrini and Rossi left absolutely free.
The second: Braz. defense gives the ball "on a silver plate" to Rossi, who otherwise would have not even chance to think of a goal in this situation.
Third goal: a clumsy attempt to stage an off-side, Junior leaves behind , Rossi si on-side
The football fans should stop talking nonsence about "the clumsy goalkeeper Valdir Perez who screwed up Brazil in 1982".
V.P. was responsible only for the goal from USSR, that had no desicive character at all.
The other two goals in his net before the game with Italy were impossible for any goalkeeper.
And none of the three goals of Rossi were because of V.P. They were all because the defenders in front of V.P. played as if this is not a world Cup , but a beach game at Copacabana.
Don't forget......Brazil lost their best striker Careca prior to WC82.
I don't see a striker of his calibre blowing that chance Serginho had one on one after being played in by Zico's pass. I agree can't really fault Peres for any of those goals by Italy. Cerezo screwed up big time.
WC 1982 team - hadn´t really good strikers like Romario and Bebeto and someone like Dunga or Mauro Silva and 1994 hadn´t really good midfield and playmakers like Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Cerezo ...
IN 2006? ask CBF about player's insurance money, and you'll know why Brazil lost the world cup.
Do you really think that a team made of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Adriano, Robinho, Zé Roberto, Roberto Carlos, Lúcio, would loose to a France that only had Zidane and henry in that time?
classic examples of mind blowing football teams not to win copa do mundo that year. just goes to show the best team does not always win, but you hope that football always will
Yeah, that was how football have to be,one big party on and off the pitch!
I was 11 years in 1982 and saw the Brazilians, they were magic, never saw something like that again,i must admit that i spilled some tears because they lost the Italy game back in 82 although i am dutch..........the way the Brazilians play the game these day's is just a shame comparing to the 82-team......
if someone who watched that team playing football and didnt apreciate it,i m sorry friends but go and choose some other hobby!spain ??give me a fucking brake man!!!!!
Just keep in mind, Brazil won 25% of all worldcups...Just like the Yankees...dynasty...Brasil sinonimo de futebol...o dia que a selecao mexicana ganhar pelo menos uma copa, dai sim pode falar que sabem jogar....Amarildo(brasileiro)Mt.Vernon, NY, USA.
that brasil team was the best team ever to play the game, all top(to be)! trainers and players of today should watch this every day to learn something!!!!
Yes, I'm from Hungary. That match was in '53, and here it's called "The Match of The Century". Hungary defeated England 6-3 at Wembley Stadium, where nobody had won for 90 years, and nobody at all from the continent! Even now there are a lot of pubs in Hungary called "6-3"! The painful is that Hungarians can only be proud of Puskás, Hidegkuti, Bozsik, Lantos, etc. even at this distance of time...
hungry hadn't lost for 5 years (32 games), they won 7-1 at home to england as well. Then they some how lost the final 3-2 to a team they had beaten 8-3 int he groups, this team were in another world and had just one bad day.
and they had alot more than them to czibor, kocsis who both played for barcelona
Best team not to win it when they should've definaely, maybe brazil in 1950 as well
This Brazilian team would be destroyed by the current Spanish NT...and many others. Football is ten times more competitive than it was by then. Today, you see more dynamism na a game between "friends of Zidane vs friends of Ronaldo.
go away ya lunatic,no team today would live that superb Brazilian team of 1982,what do the current Spanish team have over that '82 team? nothing so don't try to sound all 'expert'
One Thing is for sure: YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SHIT ABOUT FOOTBALL !! Hahahaha, today's Spanish squad is TRASH if compared to '82 Brazilian squad, the best of all time along with Brazilian squads of '70 and '58. Shut up and go learn more you dumb idiot.
So pleased to see the comments on this posting.Thought I was the only one that had a pouring of emotion when this team went out in the summer of 82 as a 13 yr old. This has always been AND ALWAYS WILL BE BEAUTIFUL BRAZIL 82....
When you see this trully wonderful Brazilian team play super attacking football it just leaves you wanting more,in comparison to the trash served up in the Premiershit/p or football of today in general,it shows how soccer has gone backwards, very cagey and little fair. I wish soccer today was as brilliant to watch as it was then, Brazil 1982 simply the best footballing team ever created, they would beat any of todays dross hands down.
there's more people speaking portuguese than italian. it could be beautiful, but it's going to die. Soon.
and so with so-called calcio: you're in DESPERATE NEED of south american players. What would you do without guys like Kaká or Ronaldinho, or Crespo, or Cruz? Who's over-rated??
Italian football is boring beacause in there is mafia called "calciopoli", in national team not played best italian player but worse... Cruz? Crespo they are only normal player but there are many italian player better than this ... example ... you remember Zola? great player but no national team... on youtube look for Giovinco... Miccoli... Pasquale Foggia... Matri... there are many good player...
No questions, Italia had some great players. My point is rather simple: Brasil has the brightest football in history, and without southamerican players (sobre todo argentinos, pero también uruguayos, peruanos, colombianos, chilenos, paraguayos) there'll be much less to see in european football.
I never saw the 70 side, they look great in the clips but football was slower then. I was 13 in 82 and Brazil were phenomenal, very quick, they looked as though they wanted to score perfect goals more than actually win, couldn't defend though, I'd love to see them play the 70 team. In 82 other teams couldn't live with Brazil, they lost against Italy because they believed they couldn't lose, then it was too late. They'd probably make the same mistake against the 70 team. But it would be close!
Well they won it, but not playing the beautiful way they used to, they are always hyped as playing football from another planet, but I really think they haven't played that way since 82. Oh and they had the easiest route to the final in 2002!
I have read alot about Brazil 1982 recently, as i learn more about them, it is becoming more obvious to me that Brazil 1982 was a GREAT side.. but to what extent?
I always thought brazil 70 was the best ever, just wondering now if brazil 82 was as just as good or even better than 1970s side. Whats your opinion? :)
that was the last time a brazilian team played intelligent and magnificant football! Something you go wow! Just the names of Socrates, Falcao, Zico Lenadro are poems in my ear when talking about football! magnifico!!!
Imbecil ese negro que falló solo con el portero. brasil el mejor ese mundial, Italia tuvo suerte, brasil hizo mas puntos, Italia empató con camerun!!!
best team ever too bad didn't win position by position with the exception of serginho it was a fun team to watch Roberto dinamite was missing on that team or even careca or sassagrande.
This brazilian comparing 1994 , 2002, deserved to win , 2002 world cup was the most boring cup i ve ever seen, but this team was increible, the way they touch the ball was
This team was absolute magic. Zico, Socrates, Junior, Falcao, Eder... They're so far ahead of anything today it's embarassing. That said, they couldn't defend for shit (or maybe they just didn't want to??), but they're still my favourite ever side.
74 wasn't nearly as good as 78 but especially 82. That's Zico and socrates, Falcao all those guys. I'm Brazilian I know what I'm talking about, you apparently don't.
Brazil 82 the best team 'never' to win the WC? WHAT!?! urm forgetting Holland 74? Brazil 82 were full of individual great players but under pressure they couldnt hold it together or play with any intelligence as proved in the qtr final against Italy. They lost against Italy because of over the top attack strategy and a poor defence. Holland 74 were a complete team and squad that played brilliantly in all positions as well as defining total football, it took luck to beat them in WC final 74.
What a pity!! The last generation of the finest Brazilian football went back home with no glory. At least no one can say that that team will be forgotten. It is just impossible not think of the '82 WC without thinking of Brazil
brazil in 82 played dream football. u will never see football being played like that again. that brazil team would beat this brazil team by 3 or 4 goals any day.
In Brazil they used to say when Serginho played the ball is square so no he wasnt exactly mister popular. Perez said in an interview before the game with Italy that his biggest fear for the match was that Rossi should all of a sudden come alive. Of course nobody took this remark seriously because up to that point Rossi was quite frankly shit and made serginho look like an actual footballer in comparison.
Was Serginho Chulapa a popular player in Brazil then?? I know that he scored many goals in Brazilian league, but they were with Waldir Perez the weakest links of my favourite team ever. But I think, that he played better than Rossi on the WC 82 before match against Italy, I remember that Rossi was horrible and woke up in this match .....
1622....I thought Falcao was their best player in 1982, his passing was spectacular and he scored some spectacular goals as well. How could I forget his mad rush after that rocket vs. Italy.
I woulda loved to have seen Careca upfront instead of Serginho. I screwed up a golden chance when he was played in 1 on 1 vs. Zoff.
I know Zico was their best player, but I thought Falcao "played the best" at WC82. Although I can't really blame Zico for being "man-marked" out the game, by the "superb" Gentile.
maradona coquero, rossi corrupto, seria A corrupta, campeonato argentino suspendido por violencia...si no fuera por los arbitros comprados ..ni italia o argentina le podrian lamer las bolas a Brazil..ni hablar de inglaterra...
im an italian fan but i must say i have enormous respect for brazillian football.the sportsmanship the brazillians displayed when they lost to italy was brilliant.good luck to brazil but not too much.
Brazil 1982 the Greaterst "PURE SOCCER" ever played. But like the other dream teams (Hungary 54 and Holland 74) did not win. Even the Italian players then said they beat the best soccer team ever assembled.
Can you imagine the damage this Brazil 82 team would cause against todays mediocrity, overhyped teams? They would cruise to victory.SA 2010 prooved just how much overrated/overhyped todays teams/players really are.Zico,Socrates and Eder would destroy todays crappy teams.

Third goal: a clumsy attempt to stage an off-side, Junior leaves behind , Rossi si on-side
tyzhen 2 years ago 2
The football fans should stop talking nonsence about "the clumsy goalkeeper Valdir Perez who screwed up Brazil in 1982".
V.P. was responsible only for the goal from USSR, that had no desicive character at all.
The other two goals in his net before the game with Italy were impossible for any goalkeeper.
And none of the three goals of Rossi were because of V.P. They were all because the defenders in front of V.P. played as if this is not a world Cup , but a beach game at Copacabana.
tyzhen 2 years ago
Don't forget......Brazil lost their best striker Careca prior to WC82.
I don't see a striker of his calibre blowing that chance Serginho had one on one after being played in by Zico's pass. I agree can't really fault Peres for any of those goals by Italy. Cerezo screwed up big time.

IN 2006? ask CBF about player's insurance money, and you'll know why Brazil lost the world cup.
Do you really think that a team made of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaká, Adriano, Robinho, Zé Roberto, Roberto Carlos, Lúcio, would loose to a France that only had Zidane and henry in that time?

I think the best team that didn't won a title except The Olympics in Helsinki gold was the Hungarian "Golden Team" in the 50's.
Heszusz 2 years ago 2
OK, you may re right - they won 6-3 or so away in England - are you Hungarian?
Apart from Puskas, "Hidekuti" is the name that made Germany really nervous in 1954.
klinsmeier 2 years ago
Yes, I'm from Hungary. That match was in '53, and here it's called "The Match of The Century". Hungary defeated England 6-3 at Wembley Stadium, where nobody had won for 90 years, and nobody at all from the continent! Even now there are a lot of pubs in Hungary called "6-3"! The painful is that Hungarians can only be proud of Puskás, Hidegkuti, Bozsik, Lantos, etc. even at this distance of time...
Heszusz 2 years ago
hungry hadn't lost for 5 years (32 games), they won 7-1 at home to england as well.

Why Waldir Peres in ogal instead of either Emerson Leao or Carlos?
Why Luizinho at the back instead of Edinho?
Why Serginho up front instead of Roberto Dinamite?

Brazil 82 the best team 'never' to win the WC? WHAT!?! urm forgetting Holland 74? Brazil 82 were full of individual great players but under pressure they couldnt hold it together or play with any intelligence as proved in the qtr final against Italy. They lost against Italy because of over the top attack strategy and a poor defence. Holland 74 were a complete team and squad that played brilliantly in all positions as well as defining total football, it took luck to beat them in WC final 74.

In Brazil they used to say when Serginho played the ball is square so no he wasnt exactly mister popular. Perez said in an interview before the game with Italy that his biggest fear for the match was that Rossi should all of a sudden come alive. Of course nobody took this remark seriously because up to that point Rossi was quite frankly shit and made serginho look like an actual footballer in comparison.
crustdisplacement 4 years ago
Was Serginho Chulapa a popular player in Brazil then?? I know that he scored many goals in Brazilian league, but they were with Waldir Perez the weakest links of my favourite team ever.
