What passion!, what elegance!, what a magnificent presence! This way dance a Pasodoble (from Spain) and a Tango (from Argentina), two romantic and passionate dances. Gene was brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read that the production team were afraid to let him do that big swing at the end because you know he could fall....so they had this big discussion as to whether he should do it or not and what happens?!?! the rose that he catches at the beginning of the number (a plastic rose) punctures his hand and he gets blood poisoning! haha he said he was all clammy, shaky, and pale and they had to continue to apply make-up to him because he was pale =( poor gene!
This dance sequence really shows the Spanish-Irish in Gene Kelley. All the good looking Irish-American actors or actresses have that Spanish look. Ronald Reagan, Audie Leon Murphy, JFK, Maureen O'Hara, to name a few.
The song at the beginning is called "La Cumparsita" by Matos Rodriguez and it is one of the most famous tangos...even though he is dancing it in a more "Flamenco" style. The second part is a one of the most famous Flamenco songs
What exactly do you call this style of dance? Tango tap ballet (because he goes en pointe in tap shoes?!?) Flamenco tap? Oh, who cares! Was he an American prince, or Superman's cousin? Not sure, but the more I see, the more amazed I am.
I totally agree he was just a forced to be reckoned with unlike anything else. I am in a constant state of shock when i watch him act, sing or dance its jsut always fantastic.
This outfit like, screams sex!!! I <3 Gene!!!

The movie is "Anchors Aweigh". I believe he's dancing to "La Cumparsita" - tango, not flamenco as the title says...

My only complaint about this video... is that it doesn't contain the whole exciting number!!!
If anyone can upload the entire shot of this dazzling, breathtaking sequence, I'm sure we'd all greatly appreciate it :o)

"Black Irish" = Irish people with dark or black hair and brown eyes, which some claim are of Iberian or Spanish derivation/ancestry.
