Oh my gosh thank you thank you thank you, for explain that, I have watched so many videos on creating a child theme and this was the most understandable video out here. So after you create a Child Theme, you STILL have to add all of your customization to the child theme before u upgrade your theme, this is where I got confused. And going forward always make your customization changes from the child them. So, you should always make a child them from the get go, and customize from there instead.
Did everything you said but doesn't show up in my themes, what did I do wrong? I see it in my FTP file with the style css file there. Just doesn't show up on my site dashboard.
So why not just copy and paste the whole theme and then customize it? You've added a whole new level of complication to the websites layout. There are now even more places for each element's styling info which makes it nightmare to edit after a year or two. Also you've prevented all styling info from being in one place even if it was in the original.
Child themes do have value but shouldn't be used most of the time. Don't you think?

Hey Lisa, thanks so much! I've never known how to do this. Looks pretty easy. I'm gonna give it a go. You did a good job describing how to do it.

So the only file in your child theme folder is the style.css file?

@moonkittynet In this example, yes. But if you are going to do more then you can add more files. See the WordPress codex link in the description.

Notepad++ is free and it also colors the code.
