The Funeral of Thomas Ashe

My grand uncle, Rover McCann, served under Thomas Ashe in 1916 at Ashbourne, the only successful event. My uncle was captured in 1922, in the War of Independence, tortured and shot. My grandfather was later mock executed twice.

I told my father about the movie 'the wind that shakes the barley' and the reference to the hunger strikers and it turns out that fellow hunger striker Thomas Hunter was my great gran -uncle........so proud!!

Im not going to take this opportunity to make a political statement or make comparison in modern times. But what I will say is he was an extraordinary man who deserves to be remembered.

Maith an fear tombarry for putting this up. I'm writing a book on the Mountjoy Hunger Strike and focusing a lot on Tomás Ághas. He was a man of indescribable strenght and principle but I'll do my best to convey it..

My name is Mark Boland and my grandfather was John Boland who was acting Govenor of Mountjoy at the time Thomas Ashe was force fed and wanted to get a bit more detail on his involvement in the hungerstrike. 22 hunger strikers in all died in modern irish history. Some died under the eyes of the free state which i am sad and ashamed to say.

In ancient times irishmen would go on hungerstrike if another man / or lord, in the village would not pay for stolen cattle etc to shame the man who done wrong into paying the fine to him.

Thomas Ashe will be remembered for his heroic victory over the Brits at Ashbourne, his men outnumbered fought and inflicted heavy casualities on the Brots before being ordered to surrender from headquarters, rest well comrade!
