My grand uncle, Rover McCann, served under Thomas Ashe in 1916 at Ashbourne, the only successful event. My uncle was captured in 1922, in the War of Independence, tortured and shot. My grandfather was later mock executed twice.
I told my father about the movie 'the wind that shakes the barley' and the reference to the hunger strikers and it turns out that fellow hunger striker Thomas Hunter was my great gran -uncle........so proud!!
my name is matthew ashe and my family came from cork. we live in australia thomas was a relative on my grandads side. i have seen this before on TV out here and i'm glad that he is not forgotten.
I spent time at his grave site in Dublin 2 years ago in Glasnevin and travelled to his home in Dingle. A great example of heroism and principle. Tom Ashe
this is the film that Collins had made, brilliant! You can see him at the very end around 3:28. "Nothing additional remains to be said. That volley which we have just heard is the only speech which it is proper to make at the grave of a dead Fenian."
Im not going to take this opportunity to make a political statement or make comparison in modern times. But what I will say is he was an extraordinary man who deserves to be remembered.
Maith an fear tombarry for putting this up. I'm writing a book on the Mountjoy Hunger Strike and focusing a lot on Tomás Ághas. He was a man of indescribable strenght and principle but I'll do my best to convey it..
@Cuimhnigh All the best with ur book i hope u do him justice in death. As he did not get it his life R.I.P THOMAS ASHE UR DEATH WAS NOT IN VEIN. UP THE IRA
@Cuimhnigh GOOD TO KNOW PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF ARE DOING UR BEST TO KEEP HIS AND HIS COMRADES STORY IN THE MINDS OF PEOPLE WHO OTHERWISE WOULD NOT KNOW ONCE AGAIN ALL THE BEST WITH UR BOOK .OH SORRY I ALMOST FORGOT TO TELL U MY GREAT GRANDAD WAS IN MOUNTJOY AT THE SAME TIME AS TOM AS HE CALLED HIM SO IF I COULD HELP WITH UR REASERCH I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO ASSIST U SO IF U WOULD LIKE TO GET BACK TO ME PLEASE DO THANKS.
My name is Mark Boland and my grandfather was John Boland who was acting Govenor of Mountjoy at the time Thomas Ashe was force fed and wanted to get a bit more detail on his involvement in the hungerstrike. If you finished the book I would be grateful if you get let me have a copy or any information about my grandfather that you may have.
he fought with richard mulcahy in ashbourne, its a pitty mulcahy wasent shoot in 1916,he had 77 anti treaty men shoot during the civil war,and gave the order in kerry at ballysheedy,
25 september 1917 thomas ash rip,he lies beside all the brave men in the republican plot glassnevin, force fed that went wrong another murder for the crown,
22 hunger strikers in all died in modern irish history. Some died under the eyes of the free state which i am sad and ashamed to say.
In ancient times irishmen would go on hungerstrike if another man / or lord, in the village would not pay for stolen cattle etc to shame the man who done wrong into paying the fine to him.
Thomas Ashe will be remembered for his heroic victory over the Brits at Ashbourne, his men outnumbered fought and inflicted heavy casualities on the Brots before being ordered to surrender from headquarters, rest well comrade!

My cares in this world are few.
And few are the tears will for me fall
When I go on my way to You. "
