Well can be both a predicate adjective if it is following a linking verb or an adverb when it is following an action verb. That's what makes it confusing.

One thing that may be confusing, though, is that certain linking verbs, such as "be" and "feel" can also be followed by adverbs as well as adjectives. For example, I can only say, "I feel well" or "I am well" if I am referring to my health. If I am talking about my emotional state, the only correct way to say it is "I feel good" or "I am good."

Why don't you include determiners in the SC? "An elephant" is different than "that elephant", but with your method there is no difference, since determiners aren't part of the SC.
