  • I used to have the vinyl single of this that came inside my Healing album. Thanx so much for posting, because it's now on my favorites playlist. Just knew someone had it here!

  • Gotta love the literalness of him actually taking the heart from his sleeve. Ah, early videos.

  • I actually like how this music video gives you an art history lesson!

  • Another fantastic Todd Rundgren song with meaningful lyrics. The guy is a non stop song machine!

  • Todd! Brilliant! so ahead of his time! I will always love him! thanks for posting!

  • Thumbs up if you thought this was Hall and Oates when you first heard this song.

  • @sdh483 Rundgren produced the Hall and Oates album War Babies in 1974 or 75 and Utopia is the band on the album. Don't know why I know that, just do.

  • It's sad that John Lennon wasn't alive to see the beginning of MTV.

  • greg benson

  • Love you Todd

  • Oh 1980's music videos, also I'm pretty sure the artist that did some of these paintings was used in a unofficial King Crimson video once.

  • I love this song!!!!! And this video!!!! It's such a motivating song, too!

  • Coincidentally, I actually thought that this was DARYL HALL singing the first time I heard this recently! What a GREAT rediscovery...conceptual video...and song!!! Todd Rundgren was definitely a Musical Wizard way ahead of his time!!!!!

  • It was the eighth video broadcast on MTV. What is most important, is that this video was made entirely by Rundgren. He made the video in his studio. Most videos are purely record company promotions - this video goes beyond that an is a conceptual piece of art. Rundgren was a pioneer in video music.

  • this was MTV's 2nd video played!!! Check the records there is proof!

  • @kinetic35 No, that honor goes to Pat Benatar's "You Better Run".

  • Today on MTV,they never mentioned once of the 30th anniversary because they've the reality shows so far up their assholes, that it took VH-1 classics to celebrate it.

  • Just watching the original MTV kick off from 1981 on VH1c and saw this awsome vid. What a great rediscovery!

  • He's wearing a girls shirt.

  • This vid and "Ashes to Ashes" had to be the most adventurous on mtv in the 1st 6 months of the show! He'd been my fav for 4 yrs. by then and this one quickly became my favorite. Total genius!

  • Love this song! Is it just me or does it sound close to ``Chrome Gadget'' from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 soundtrack. Especially at 0:17.

  • Can never go wrong with Todd Rundgren. :3

  • Does anybody else think that a lot of this song sounds amazingly like Hall and Oates??

  • @jonk1964 uuuht no

  • @jonk1964 They are all from Philly and Rundgren produced three Hall&Oates albums. In fact , rumor has it that Daryl Hall and Todd RUndgren are going to tour together this next year. CHeck them out together at Live at Daryls House.

  • todd is godd

  • @rockwello you betcha

  • Todd, is a genius!

  • This was the eighth video on MTV when it started, after "Brass In Pocket" and before REO's "Take It On The Run." this was by far the most "artsy" of the first dozen, maybe the entire first month or year. Todd is awesome!

  • More Todd!! Never Enough!! OK Off to the Cure page

  • His son plays minor league baseball for a Chicago suburbs team.

  • Rex Rundgren played for Kane County in 2002. He's subsequently played for several minor league teams, the latest being the Las Vegas 51's in the summer of '08, AAA club for the LA Dodgers. Rex is a great shortstop, but doesn't hit well enough for the majors. He'll be 28 in Nov., and his baseball career is likely at an end.

  • Ahh, thx for the info. I thought he still played for the cougars. I learned of this through word of mouth & thought it was interesting. Does he have musical skills as well? Or did he shy away from that?

  • As far as I know, Rex has no musical ambitions like Todd. I've read that he listens to a lot of different music, but is not particularly talented at music. I think he plays the drums, and he's stated that he might do something with dad down the road. Rex only started playing guitar in his 20's, so I doubt Todd had much influence there. Who knows???

  • Todd Rundgren kicks ass....plain and simple.

  • Todd is a genius!.-

  • Todd being made a victim of then-special effects. Great song.

  • I sing this to my wife all the time and she now wants to kill me when i sing it to her.

  • I just love this song sooo much only last year I started listening to Todd and I just love his music

  • It's never too late to discover great music!

  • @solitudeseeker,Hey I know what you mean because these classic rock songs I've been hearing from my dad when I was a kid,I still listen to it today as a grown man. I listen to it more than the music of today.

  • This was one of the first 5 or 6 videos ever to appear on MTV.

  • Buggles then Todd 1 & 2nd videos on MTV. I was THERE! oh my god i'm old.

  • todd rundgren must be a fan of dali

  • I remember when this song came on MTV, I made my own mix tape with a portable CASSETTE player!

    I can't believe I'm 44...

    Peace,

    NYBULLY

  • Ah, yes, the old MTV days back when it was GOOD!! Thanks for posting.

  • Pat Benatar "You Better Run" was second video played. I know I have first 4 hours on MTV ever aired on dvd. This song was played within the first hour. Great song.

  • This is the 2nd video that MTV played.

  • This was the 8th video played on MTV.

There are accurate lists posted all over the web.

  • It sounds like Hall & Oats or maybe they sounded like him. He was the producer on one of Hall & Oats albums. He worked with others. On one of his Utopia tours around 1975 or 76 he was standing in the parking lot before the show in a Army jacket shaking hands and saying Hi.Freaked me out man!!

  • Thanks for finding and posting this. I never got to see the video for this one before. Do you know where I can find the Utopia video feet don't fail me now? I remember seeing that one on mtv in the early days also. Maybe 1983.

  • Early MTV for 'sho! I was a 19 year college freshman burning the midnite oil trying to keep from flunking out. I vividly remember this and "ashes to ashes", by Bowie, & "clues" by Robert Palmer being played all night on early MTV.

  • This does sound alot like Hall and Oates, both are from Philly and were influenced by Philly Soul of the early 70's.I WANT MY MTV BACK!!!

  • This has been a favorite of mine since I first heard/saw it on MTV 27 years ago - thanks for posting it. Zaps

  • One of my favorite videos from the early days of MTV. No question!

  • This is the first Todd video I ever saw, and I LOVED that he used Dali's "Persistence of Memory" (:48-1:04) a favorite of mine even since childhood. I'm so glad you posted this!!! *Peace*! :)

  • it was played within the first hour of mtv. you better run was the second video

  • sound like hall and oats... I like it!

  • cool...interesting how static the video images are compared to today's quick-cut epileptic videos for ADD kids (mixed metaphors? y'all know what i mean).todd was also a pioneer in this field; further proof he could do anything and do it well

  • dali and rundgren. perfect

  • I think that's why I especially had always liked this video...Dali's eerie works of art along with Rundgrens wild imagination! Awesome.

  • he is in his own league

  • he is in his own league

  • Thanks for posting this . you can totally see how much he influenced Hall and Oates from this and many of his other songs.

  • I wonder where the idea for using Salvador Dali's art came from. The biggest thing about this video that stood out for me was the Crucifix.

  • Not just Dali's work! Rene Magritte's work (one of my favorite Surrealists)as well.

  • I heard this was the second video ever played on MTV (after that Buggles tune).

    Nice dancing, Todd!!

  • 'Tis true. Our man was in the top ten.

  • I think you're right. I was watching MTV from the beginning, and this Todd vid was on all the time. I've missed it, and am happy to be able to watch it again.

  • awesome video!! thanks!

  • One of my favorite Runfgren tumes. Thanks for posting this vid!

  • Great song. One of my favorite Rundgren tunes. Thanks for posting this vid!
