I used to have the vinyl single of this that came inside my Healing album. Thanx so much for posting, because it's now on my favorites playlist. Just knew someone had it here!
Coincidentally, I actually thought that this was DARYL HALL singing the first time I heard this recently! What a GREAT rediscovery...conceptual video...and song!!! Todd Rundgren was definitely a Musical Wizard way ahead of his time!!!!!
It was the eighth video broadcast on MTV. What is most important, is that this video was made entirely by Rundgren. He made the video in his studio. Most videos are purely record company promotions - this video goes beyond that an is a conceptual piece of art. Rundgren was a pioneer in video music.
Today on MTV,they never mentioned once of the 30th anniversary because they've the reality shows so far up their assholes, that it took VH-1 classics to celebrate it.
This vid and "Ashes to Ashes" had to be the most adventurous on mtv in the 1st 6 months of the show! He'd been my fav for 4 yrs. by then and this one quickly became my favorite. Total genius!
@jonk1964 They are all from Philly and Rundgren produced three Hall&Oates albums. In fact , rumor has it that Daryl Hall and Todd RUndgren are going to tour together this next year. CHeck them out together at Live at Daryls House.
This was the eighth video on MTV when it started, after "Brass In Pocket" and before REO's "Take It On The Run." this was by far the most "artsy" of the first dozen, maybe the entire first month or year. Todd is awesome!
Rex Rundgren played for Kane County in 2002. He's subsequently played for several minor league teams, the latest being the Las Vegas 51's in the summer of '08, AAA club for the LA Dodgers. Rex is a great shortstop, but doesn't hit well enough for the majors. He'll be 28 in Nov., and his baseball career is likely at an end.
Ahh, thx for the info. I thought he still played for the cougars. I learned of this through word of mouth & thought it was interesting. Does he have musical skills as well? Or did he shy away from that?
As far as I know, Rex has no musical ambitions like Todd. I've read that he listens to a lot of different music, but is not particularly talented at music. I think he plays the drums, and he's stated that he might do something with dad down the road. Rex only started playing guitar in his 20's, so I doubt Todd had much influence there. Who knows???
@solitudeseeker,Hey I know what you mean because these classic rock songs I've been hearing from my dad when I was a kid,I still listen to it today as a grown man. I listen to it more than the music of today.
Pat Benatar "You Better Run" was second video played. I know I have first 4 hours on MTV ever aired on dvd. This song was played within the first hour. Great song.
It sounds like Hall & Oats or maybe they sounded like him. He was the producer on one of Hall & Oats albums. He worked with others. On one of his Utopia tours around 1975 or 76 he was standing in the parking lot before the show in a Army jacket shaking hands and saying Hi.Freaked me out man!!
Thanks for finding and posting this. I never got to see the video for this one before. Do you know where I can find the Utopia video feet don't fail me now? I remember seeing that one on mtv in the early days also. Maybe 1983.
Early MTV for 'sho! I was a 19 year college freshman burning the midnite oil trying to keep from flunking out. I vividly remember this and "ashes to ashes", by Bowie, & "clues" by Robert Palmer being played all night on early MTV.
This is the first Todd video I ever saw, and I LOVED that he used Dali's "Persistence of Memory" (:48-1:04) a favorite of mine even since childhood. I'm so glad you posted this!!! *Peace*! :)
cool...interesting how static the video images are compared to today's quick-cut epileptic videos for ADD kids (mixed metaphors? y'all know what i mean).todd was also a pioneer in this field; further proof he could do anything and do it well
I think you're right. I was watching MTV from the beginning, and this Todd vid was on all the time. I've missed it, and am happy to be able to watch it again.

@sdh483 Rundgren produced the Hall and Oates album War Babies in 1974 or 75 and Utopia is the band on the album. Don't know why I know that, just do.

Oh 1980's music videos, also I'm pretty sure the artist that did some of these paintings was used in a unofficial King Crimson video once.
