Yes the gap in between the filter can and the filter media is a good thing, it won't restrict flow. I would take the Mobil 1 for my extended drain intervals as I like that it has the potential to catch 10 micron sized particles and has the ability to do 8 to 10,000 miles without a problem since it's rated for 15,000 miles.. Currently going to test drive the Napa Platinum it is also priced the same as the Mobil 1 E.P. Filter.
come on people since when are the oil filters we have been using for years all of a sudden a big deal when it comes to the cunstruction? Some get opened up and now it's the end of the world? it's not like we are comparing motor oils.
@chamblizi K&N is the same thing as the mobil one. The K&N just has a thicker case. Fram is shit anyway there are lots of videos of fram filters getting cut open on you tube.
@workensmart well no one uses the 6x because there all using the cut open of the crappy ones compare 6x vs K&N i find that those little filters you get from a jiffy lub are pure shit i don't put company funded junk on my truck only synthetics and top tested filters on
@workensmart Mobil 1 and K&N are NOT the same filters. Mobil 1 filters are made by Champion, while K&N are made by Hiflofiltro. The two filters are constructed differently, with the K&N (auto) geared more toward high flow (20microns) while the Mobil 1 is geared toward deeper cleaning (10microns). So they are different...with the Mobil 1 being the superior filter. I think you might be thinking of Bosch oil filters when you said K&N, since Bosch are also made by Champion.
@Begbucks - The Mobil 1 website should have that information. The better AMSOIL Absolute Efficiency oil filters provide a filtering efficiency in accordance with industry standard ISO 4548-12 of 98.7 percent at 20 microns, while competitive filters demonstrate efficiencies as low as 51 percent.
@5283Frank - Depends on the application. Wix is a very good oil filter, but they don't have any oil filters specifically designed for the rigors of extended drain use. AMSOIL does with the Absolute Efficiency Ea nanofiber technology oil filter and Mann is also excellent. Check out the video's on my channel and see. :)
@JayzBeerz I have used them in the past I would have cut one of them open as well but I didn't have one installed in any of my cars at the time. Bt yeah they also make good products.
@workensmart Hey I just picked up 4 Pureone oil filters from Advanced Auto parts for $2.87 each. Buy them online and use some of the coupons available and there is a $3.00 rebate for each. There's one whole year of oil changes right there. if you need the coupons and want to buy 4 let me know. You can just pick them up at your local AAP store.
It's better if you wear gloves to prevent skin contact with the engine oil, as the additives/contaminants in the motor oil can be carcinogenic.
Also, the amount of filter media in the filter is not only dependent on the outer diameter of the cartridge, so it's hard to tell if the WIX has more filter element than the Mobil 1 just by looking at it. Having little space between the cartridge and the filter housing can decrease oil flow so it's not necessarily a good thing.
You want a good size gap between the filter and the can for FLOW! that pennzoil filter with the small gap like that would be more restrictive to flow, gap is a good thing.
Also one cannot say "best" just on looks people!!,,yes build quality is important but to say best you need to know filtering ability's/efficiency's,beta ratios, and flow characteristics.
these videos are a joke mostly, lots of BAD/wrong info.
I dont think you want the filter element to firmly fit because that would restrict oil flow. If there is a gap from the filter element to the container it allows a better flow of oil. I only use purolator pure one oil filter. They sell for about $6.50 at the store. They are a ugly mustard color, but they have excellent filtration without restricting the flow.
I stopped using napa golds for my truck recently. There were metal chips on the threads on the last few I bought and one had a huge string of steel laying inside the can. It looks like they re-thread it for my application (93 nissan truck) and it wasn't cleaned up. I've had mixed luck with the anti drainback on em too. I switched to purolator and on my 3rd one of those the anti drainback failed after a few startups. I'm gonna try Nissan's filter now. I just bought 10 of em, hope they're good lol
it looks like the filter element in the first one that was all crushed a little bit because all the bends in the paper were pretty close to the same, maybe stretch it out a bit and the paper would straighten up, but very good comparison, i have been using the fram toughguard since ive been driving which isnt long compared to alot of people (8 years) but i have never had any engine problems. now the transmission on my 2008 silverado sucks, but thats another story.
@boxersrock1 GM trannys always sucked. the only good one's are the TH350 and TH400. But yeah the fram filter isn't going to ruin your engine unless your hearing engine noise or if you have a high performance engine.
The Pennzoil filter is actually a Fram filter relabeled. I just put a NAPA Gold filter on my mercury, waiting to see if it performes better than the NAPA Proselect filters. The Proselect filters are about half price and work well. Probably much better than any Fram!
Pennzoil switched suppliers over a year ago. The current Pennzoil filters are made by Purolator. Check the Pennzoil filter guide. You'll be directed to an extension from Purolator main site.
Thanks for the comparison! I've wanted to see the wix vs mobil 1 because I use the mobil 1 filter and wanted to see how it held up vs a highly respected competitor (wix). Thanks for all of the input on each filter!
pretty stiff as it flexes on the penzoil filter hahahaha

@UKSportsFan there is a site called mini mopar and the guy cut open a K&N and a mobil 1. On his site he stated both were made by champion labs.

Thanks for the review, Been using the Mobil 1 Extended for about the last 8 years Now perhaps I might opt for the Napa, thanks, Dan

@Begbucks - The NAPA oil filter is not designed for extended drain use and doesn't have the dirt holding capacity of the Mobil 1 oil filter.

@HiTechOilCo But what is the micron filtration? of else it's just a can with two openings lol

@HiTechOilCo I'll check it out. 20 Microns is a huge gap however.

@Begbucks - How do you mean?
HiTechOilCo 4 months ago
@HiTechOilCo Poor filtration.
Begbucks 4 months ago
@Begbucks - 98.7% at 20 microns is *excellent*. Very few oil filters can filter that well.
HiTechOilCo 4 months ago
@HiTechOilCo & sadly that make most filters inadequate which why I seldom replace them, only the oil or polish it.
