High school level of Spanish is pretty extensive vocabulary, so my guess is that you're more like a elementary school level of Spanish. But unlike English Spanish is a very forgiving language, if you say food or here, in Spanish we get it,you are hungry and you are going somewhere not to mention you can have an entire conversation just with a few words.
