Shale oil is in plentiful amounts as is gas in the ground is, oil is not going to run out tomorrow but as the pockets run dry it will be needed to be extracted from different and more expensive sources, you will have to pay more for oil as it becomes harder and more expensive to extract.

Based on my other Comment OIL is replenished by the planet and is not an exhaustible resource. The concept of peak oil is a lie. The limitations we have on oil is basically how quickly we can pull it from the earth and how fast we can refine it. The oil industry has not build refineries to create a fake shortage to drive up the prices of oil and gas. Now they are doing the same with food. Growing food to turn into fuel when there is no need, this in turn is driving up the price of food.

fair enough, but. oil, and coal are fossil fuels. these were formed by a process that took millions of years. what you're saying doesn't make sense....you're right that as organic material decomposes, the process starts, and millions of years later the result will be fossil fuels..however. since the industrial revolution we have been consuming fossil fuels at a rate that overwhelmingly exceed the planets' ability to produce it.....

...and became fossil fuels, the earth would have been continually producing oil at a rate equal to today's current consumption which in 2006 was (at best) 28 billion barrels a year. if this was true, then even before the industrial revolution the world would have been a seething mass of oil with oil bubbling from every orifice!...if the average human life expectancy was 4 or 5 million years, and we could live without food for that long then yes oil is not an exhaustible rescource....

if oil was replenished as quickly as you're suggesting..then there would be no need for saudi arabia to start drilling off shore, as they are sitting on the worlds largest oil deposit (25%) of the worlds oil is in the guar oil field. Peak oil is not a myth. if it wasn't then the bush administration wouldn't have orchestrated 9/11, we wouldn't have invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, and established permanent bases out there and built oil pipelines...i could go on for ages about this...

Oil is made up of carbon based molecular structures that are linked with hydrogen. Another word is hydrocarbons. Anything that is organic is made up of those molecules. Animals, plants, Algae, Fungus, Bacteria. When things die they decompose but their molecules stay behind. Ever hear Bio Fuels which are made from corn oil and turned into diesel. That is oil made from corn you can do that with anything organic.

my father has told me stories about when he was a young man in the 70's, working as a ditch digger, employed by the oil companies in Wyoming and Colorado. He was hired to go out to an oil drill site, dig a long ditch to redirect the oil, then at the end of the ditch, dig a large hole, let the oil flow into this hole, then bury the ditch to trap the oil in this hole (which is many yards away from the drill site) then once the oil was completely confined in the pit, he would toss a match into it.
