Can someone PLEASE tell me what to do if like there is 9 beads (the bead at the top and the rest at the bottom) and you have to add like 9 do you move to the next column after you get to 9 again (in that one column)??
I am teaching mental arithmwetic program using abacus in Chennai, India. I have two 4 year old girls completed 5 levels. They can do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Both of them are studying in UKG and are taught only single digit numbers not even addition in the school. It is also interesting to note that the program is not just for mastering mathemtics, but for the overall perfomance. In fact, the children are doing exceptionally well in all the subjects.
The benefit of learning something like the abacus is in teaching your mind to more efficiently structure numbers for calculation... see the other youtube videos for speed-math abacus competitors in Japan... they don't even use the physical abacus, it's all imaginary and mental. If I practiced using a calculator hours on end, I'd get pretty damned fast at it, myself!
I played with one as a child in doctor's office waiting rooms. Wish I knew how to use it. I wonder if it's possible that learning these skills as an adult would still be beneficial.
The problem with a calculator is it provides the "easy short cut" to the answer. It's not necessarily faster, but it's easier to do... an abacus can be faster than a calculator...heck, for that matter a pencil and paper can be faster than a calculator!!
It's more about practicing the basic math for hours and hours until your brain knows how to structure and process the information!

Probably fun as well.

Agreed. Although, after a while I would think the learning process would get irritating at a few spots.
