An exact copy of the traditional Kirov take - which means it is good! Loads of fun too. Things only get iffy when they try to 'improve' the great works.
Wow! I can't believe this is the same production that I saw with Komleva and Terekhova. I wonder how old it really is! I DO love it like an old friend. The mime is excellent and is exactly the same to the "T" as used by the two dancers I have mentioned. I DO love how the tradition is kept alive while all the world falls apart in disarray.
Notice that Gamzatti loses her regal composure at 3:15 and pulls it together at 3:25. We all need to cut Gammi some slack here...she's seen enough arranged, loveless marriages in her life and I think she really DOES like Solor...that's why she's so desperate. In Feb. 2010 the Bolshoi is going to do Don Q in Orange County...I was tempted to see Zakharova...but because of this clip...I might change my mind and go see Maria!
I was thinking the same thing! I'm going to see it there also, and I can't decide between Zakharova and Alexandrova...maybe I'll just go to two of them. :)
If it is DQ go for Alexandrova without any doubt: she is the best Bolshoi dancer and the best Kitri in the world. And save money on Zakharova's Kitri without any doubt!!!! (go for Osipova as a close second choice)
I've seen live in DQ at least twice (plus several videos) Alexandrova, Osipova and Zakharova... trust me and skip Zakharova: I would book for her only in Swan Lake. :-)
Zakharova is the greatest ballerina of all time, past and present. She is perfection. She has the technique, emotion, plasticity, legs and feet, body and of course a face to die for. She is great in all the work she did, including Don Quixote. She is a goddess and beyond human.
@iczerman It's also sad that she's using everything she knows to get Nikiya to leave Solor-she's trying to intimidate her with her rank, threaten, or bribe her. Come to think of it, those tactics are probably what her father used with her to get her to do something.
The Gammi thing is so adorable though. I can just see her fuming if someone called her that!
qbendanny1 really where are you!!! i miss your comments so much... regresa mi querido balletomano! que va a ser del ballet en youtube sin tus comentarios...
Tatiana Terekhova was the best acting and the best dancing (and best looking) Gamzatti of the last century . . . big shoes to fill for everybody . . .
This is the right role for Alexandrova. As for Lopatkina, I am yet to see a role in which she wasn't at the top. She is the living legend in her lifetime.
@Mashka8888 She is my fav. dancer right now...she always brings tears to my eyes...not to mention she's absolutely beautiful...her soul breathes through her dance
