Beautifully done, but unlike smithsherman (2 comments earlier), I absolutely love Pogorelich's interpretation. Is there a more passionate piano piece than this? Not to my ear.
I think he expresses the prayer-like qualities of this Sonata better than any others on YT. An even slower tempo and even less rubato would make it perfect.
@dstumpf1 might be a permanent search for inspiration... it´s so automatic sometimes... we always search something above us, higher and greater... the instinct is to raise the head... hehehehe. That´s what I guess.
Oberlin has trained Mr. Myer well. This is one of Scarlatti's most sublime creations. It is truly a gift to all those who come across it, be it to play or absorb. So painful to imagine that he crafted all of these jewels for the obese Spanish queen, Maria Barbara, who surely as a student didn't appreciate their exquisite depth, as she evidently found greater pleasures elsewhere in her court.
In the end of most of the frazes you are slowing down annecessarily. It is a bit to much for me. Pity, because your playing is magnificent in ather aspects
Yeah, the guy 'breathes' between musical phrases! What an thoroughly unecessary thing to do! A bit more practise with the metronome and he could play more strictly in time- and hence 'better'.
Dear Andrew,Go back to conservatory and count your metronome ticks.Spencer has left the realm of piano as mindless gymnastics to reassure his manliness of his own mastery and has moved onto the artistic plane of...meaning.
you beautiful beautiful man... This is sheer utter deliciousness. Your Scarlatti pours from your fingers, weeping through them. Despair without tears.
This moved me beyond words. It actually pulled out a copy of the music and inspired me to get back to the keyboard after a very long time away. THANK YOU.
Following your recommendations. It is better to show than to tell. This is remarkably beautiful. What a wonderful legato and melodiousness. Am checking out your other recommendations, but also check out Glenn Gould and Bach...best

there must be at least two different versions of this piece. The second part is different in the beginning to the one I know.

Which edition is the best for this piece? I hear little differences in almost every interpretation!

I think you missed the intended irony- in suggesting that breathing is 'unnecessary'.
cziffra1980 3 years ago
I like it just fine this way ... as you say, a matter of taste. I'd vary the dynamics a bit more myself.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Somebody call this guy please and get him on a plane
to Martha Argerich's house, where he can begin to
instruct her on how music can actually be a part
of Scarlatti.After that,fly him to Pogorelich's
so he repeat the instruction.

After Pogorelich,this guy is a paradise.He actually
makes love to the music, the listener, and himself
simultaneously;instead of attacking it like an
unfeeling sadist.Thank God,that there are still
living,breathing,feeling humans like this,who
will not let the academics dry them up with
their stupid very modern "Baroque Performance
Practice"Thank you with all of my heart!!!
