I see a lot of shooters jutting their support hand way up front of the barrel with their thumb seemingly pointing at the target... is this type of stand/form really only good for quick acquisition and recoil management?

if you're looking USPSA/action/3Gun shooters then this style of grip has been popular among those competition circles since the 80's since it allows for more control over the muzzle which translates to faster target transitions, and faster and more accurate follow up shots. i know Kyle Defoor credits John Shaw for introducing this technique to the NSW guys
