You make some excellent points that are verified by social psychology. When we watch these auctions and wonder how these people could be so foolish, our judgments are biased by hindsight bias - we know the person lost their unit, so we think "why didn't they just sell off the items"? But the person was in denial of course, just like most of us would be. Few people are honest about their net worth.
i just wanted to say about he part about finding guns in storage units is. if you find a gun that shoots bullets, flames, shells, and any type of projectile. you must turn it into your local police station or ATF agents by law. if you dont and get caught selling it to somebody else you will get a fine and jail time.
@tylertucker666123 -totally untrue in the state of GA my dude. I was at an auction during my first months in the business, a guy bought a room, had guns in it a lot of guns, the management tried to take the guns back, dude stood his ground and called the cops! The police came verified the guns were not stolen, dude took home 9 guns! CHECK YOUR STATE LAWS BEFORE YOU SELL A GUN!!!
@tylertucker666123 So much misinformation in such a small post. First off, the "ATF" really does not care about your run of the mill, ("I bought it at Bass-Pro; now I want to sell it") P2P sales. The BATFE gets involved with few specific things. Second, which ever state you operate in is whose statutes will dictate what constitutes a legal transaction. Last, I don't know if it's willful ignorance, or you have been led a stray, but DO NOT TRUST YOUR GOVERNMENT - EVER! You need to wake up.
I had advertised for a long time to clean up garages, attics and host the sale. I would take my cut after the sale, a lot of very hard work. Unless one day the son-in-law shows up at the sale, because his mother in law was facing foreclosure. Started raising hell about prices, and how much I charge. I ended up calling the police, but despite the contract, the police advised me to leave. I am still waiting to get into court. Now, I go to storage unit sales. Less work really.
@sandrajeanification -often people are -married- to their stuff at garage sales, it can be kinda of sad. A properly held garage sale can be a lot of work! At least with storage auctions you can work it the way that you want too!
Either the first or second unit I purchased I was with a friend. I looked at it and all I saw was old carpet and a blanket. My friend had a good feeling so we bought it.
In the back there was a 30K Plus CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE!!!!!
@5aminspections - you can see they driving up all gangsta I got my money bitches! Usually it is the good units that are saved that day, to be auction off at some point in the future....
@Glendon007 You're right about that because when the manager told me that the unit wasn't going up for bid, another employee there said "YEAH MAN, IT'S A DAMN SHAME TO BECAUSE THERE WAS SOME GOOD SHIT IN THERE". "DO YOU HEAR ME, I'M TALKIN' SOME NICE!!!!!!!! SHIT"....I had to tell the the dude to calm down. He had me shaking my head as I walked away and I hadn't even seen the stuff
It is not bottom feeding. They are flat out jealous. You hit the nail on the head, people for whatever reason can't get their priorities straight with their finanances. Nobody's fault but their own. You are absolutely right.
People wanna go out to the bar and party,go get high, gamble at the track or buy that expensive jacket before paying their bills.
Dude! You get it. I 'know' the people you are talking about, I used to be in the house rental business. I would like to play this for every kid in high school.
@o2wow -the USA is a house of cards that is falling fast in the name of " the low low" we have given so much away that was of * true* value it is not funny!
Back when we were scamming storage units we would separate out the personal crap, you know family pictures, financial records etc and try to contact the family to ask if they wanted it. That stuff is no good to a stranger and we ony felt it was the right thing. usually the family was very thankful, but once they came and got the stuff and saw the treadle sewing machine and said it was a family heirloom. We told them the heirloom will cost $250 (we had $300.00 standing offer) they were PISSED!
@stetsonwalker -dude I rarely sold stuff back, they could have the personals, but they always wanted the items that were going to make money at a nominal " good guy" fee. Being a good guy did not pay my bills, being a hustler did. Yes, I had a lot of folks pissed at me about that stuff, but you got to pull the heart strings out of it or you will miss out on a lot of money.
hey glendon, i just had an epiphany!! ok, maybe not an epiphany but a really great idea. they should create a video game based on the 'tycoon' games, and call it 'thrift shop tycoon'.
here's how it goes: you compete with other thrift shop owners in obtaining merchandise through various means, including 'storage unit auctions' etc. imagine the main character trying to buy a truck, etc. trying to expand, etc. sales, sales, sales!!!
I love the vids...keep em coming. I went to my first auction today...had 6 rooms up and 1 of them looked like a family threw everything that they own in this mess....my question is do you stay away from these type of units or roll the dice(btw the unit went for $600).there was 50 people there, they started auctioning before we could even get a look at the unit-it was crap! thanks again for your info
@KucharAD -I had a E250 Van for going to the auctions I used a 17 ft Isuzu NPR with lift gate and 27 foot straight truck, we had dock height load doors, the big trucks made life much easier!
I live in a retirement mecca, 50% of the units that come up for auction are from people who have passed on, or have moved to a nursing home and forgot about it. Old people mean antiques, and collections. Yeah, I'll take the names being called me. lol
@Glendon007 luckily, no dead bodies yet. God I hope I never come across those. On the upside, a lot of coin collections, silver and gold certificates. Older furniture from the 40's and 50's. May favorite to date was a vintage Ben Franklin Stove. I decided to keep that one.
@bruinsfleetcommander -thanks! In fact for a long time Honda's were crazy expensive, but reliable and people paid the premium for dependability! Hmmm what a concept, people paying for quality! That use to be an American concept!
HAHA I knew exactly where you were going when you said we are a nation of bottom feeders. To this day people still don't get it. Bought 10k worth of hair products for 1k today. Now flip it for a quick 3k or piece it out for 8-10k. Hmmm?
@turboman8082 -man, if people truly understood the repercussions behind our love affair with ultra cheap prices, they would shudder if something was too cheap! No matter who pays it there is a cost, that bill will be settled up by someone! Unfortunately, many are now paying with their homes being foreclosed, 401Ks depleted and the hope tank on empty.
@Glendon007 Thankfully I got alot of contacts in the distribution world. Gonna start using them. I may have to wait til it's warm and do a flea market. But this is the NYC area and it's like the wild west so there is always a way to make money.
Hey Glendon, what is that t-shirt you're wearing? I know it's not WHEATIES, so what is it?
Second thing is, I totally agree with what you are saying about the 'good samaritans' wanting to 'give back' for the greater good. I myself, feel the 'good samaritan' sometimes, but I also have a more realistic outlook on life and human behavior. Not everybody has the same story, and behind the person is a whole lot more that they aren't telling you. Just saying.
@mrfunderful -dude I had a lady call me crying about her PaPa ashes, turns out there were diamond rings in the urn, which I gave back to her! ( Ya better believe I kept the rings) Some people truly hit hard times and others open the door and say come right on in.....
Yesterday, I was in Louisville at an auction. Normal crowd, except for this elderly lady. The regulars were offering help if she bought a unit and needed it loaded. You could tell she was out of place. Needless to say, after the auction she handed me a note which stated that I had bought her unit and she wanted to buy it back. It was full of antique china and a huge snowglobe collection. Lost her job, illness, age! I helped her load it, gave her the unit. Bottomfeeders, I THINK NOT!!!
@freethinker3161 -several reasons, when I started this process I made the decision to never tell anyone's name whether it was a good unit or not. I have been through some hard times in my life, I do not want to be reminded about it and I know many of these people have put it behind them and moved on, I will give them that courtesy. There is also a group of criminals whose units I bought that scared the shit out of me, many of those units finds I WILL NEVER WRITE NOR SPEAK ABOUT I like breathing
Vern, I think I have to postpone death for a week so I can get my stuff out of storage. lol
If I don't buy itt, there's plenty who will, so I might as well make mine. Its nothing personal, its business. And in these times, if you can't find work, you have to make work.
you right i always say we gave the country away now everybody bitching, i was overseas in 70's 80's gm made toyota, ford mazda, chrysler/dodge mitsubishi, we dont even make american tv's yet we wonder why we dont have jobs. so now what economy we have, we have a pyramid think about it were constantly buying and selling to each other. now we got a brother in office and he catches shit for 40 years of bullshit.
@sifukt Well, our country has gone through a few economic revolutions in the past. the first was agriculture to industrial (manufacturing), then industrial to technology, now its technology to services. this is a natural progression that happens to all capitalistic societies. I find it very interesting how people keep complaining that "our country used to make things, and now that it doesn't, people are out of work." No, people need to change their skill sets. People tend to get stuckintheirways
