the thing i find the most trouble with is four patterns like

e e e a e a a a

as refering to the largest open strings

is there anyhelp for things like this?

try first without the metronome, really slow, to get a feel for it, and to get the right amount of 'strength' needed to hit the lower strings. then use the metronome starting from a very low speed. good luck!
