  • that scene at the end of Terminator 3 reminds me of this, except for the happy ending.

  • I love watching Alley Sheedy's subtle facial expressions through this scene.

  • My favorite line in this movie comes right after this, when it is revealed that Joshua is going to try to continue "playing" by breaking the U.S. password and launching the U.S. missiles, and General Beringer tells the dude in charge of Joshua, " Mr. McKittrick, after very careful consideration, sir, I've come to the conclusion that your new defense system sucks." LMAO every time!

  • This has probably happened dozens of times and in about 70 years when it becomes declassified we'll read all about it.

  • Maybe this movie will be enough to teach us not to be stupid enough to turn over control of sensitive systems to computers.

  • Crystal Palace, You still there?? AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

  • 2:17 the librarian?

  • That was from Metal Gear Peace Walker.....

  • That really happened. They played a tape for exercises in a Command and control center. At some point the computer ran the exercise program, with hundreds of nukes inbound. However there was no confirmation from the radar sights. I dont remember the movie. How was it possible that the confidence was high? Did the program in the movie affect radar data too?

  • @cassius969 its amazing that a REAL situation in russia was actually stopped by a man to 'stop thinking like a machine' as the radar picked up what it thought was incoming nuclear missiles.

  • would int you hate to be the lady that has to countdown?

  • Hey, Lt. Col. Powers was Dropkick in the first scene.

  • Ally Sheedy's reaction at 1:58 is incredible. She's a great actress.

  • What's the "Impact" lady's name?

  • This is Crystal Phallus, standing by.

  • 2400 warheads? Wow, if they were real...America (and the world) would be completely....fucked.

  • "A masterclass in creating movie tension, thankyou John Badham!"

Yeah this is top notch as you can get.

  • Such a classic. Unfortunately, there would be a lot less tension in this scene if the filmmakers had acknowledged the existence of this thing called Radar...

  • @dmurvihill

And, um, television...you think 2400 missiles would go unnoticed by CNN?

  • @columbusmozart LOL, was CNN even a presence at this point? Heh, youngsters don't remember the days before 24/7 cable news and 999 channels. Correct on radar of course, but this is a movie, and for dramatic and tension purposes you have to take certain things for granted. I wouldn't exactly call a movie with WOPR misinterpreting an invitation to play video games into starting a global thermonuclear war a documentary or anything!

  • one of the most underated movies in history, classic tension and well cast, and a bit of movie triva for you guys : Martin Brest (Beverly Hills cop) was the original director for this movie but was sacked Ironically all the props used such as the big screens and control panels were used in beverly hills police station for beverly hills cop,

  • Hahahaha so dumb! they got people into nuke shelters from a video game in this movie!!

  • JESUS H CHRIST WE'RE STILL HERE! lmao

  • @imabadass924 What does H stand for? Holy?? Please forgive me, i'm not english... Thank you

  • @jimsy73 Yes. i do believe so yes. Lol

  • @jimsy73 Haploid.

  • For those who remember, some of "Joshua's" sound effects are from Simon and Merlin hand-held games.

  • have this one on dvd, a classic

  • if you've got the same one I do, then its got this scene as a screen saver.

  • この映画の緊迫感好きだな

  • 合意した。と影響の不吉なサウンドを驚くほどです。

  • 当社の英語フォーラムのうち、ひどい目に遭う

  • This is the movie that got me started in IT. Bonus: It's still relevant more than a quarter century later.

  • I believe that's "Airman Daughtery", but absent a script in front of me, I could be wrong.

  • @Synergy90210 The movie means as much then as now...even more. I remember that scene so well. My friend, best friend, gave me the DVD. "Stay on this channel as long as you can. We'll be standing by."

I love how, in father-like moment, the general speaks to Airman Daugherty.

We're right there with you guys.

    Love this movee.

  • @Tigerman1138 I loved this movie back there in the day. However when General Beringer says "where right there with you." I think I would say, to myself, "Sure your under a mountain and behind 200 ton blast doors with enough food and water to last for three month's."

  • @Synergy90210

    Its Airman Daugherty there slick..........

  • I always liked her voice saying "impact."

The first time I watched this I thought her name was Crystal Palace. I wish my name was Crystal Palace.

  • Crystal Palace is a cheap clear gin.

But yeah, between her voice, the animation, and the subwoofer rumble bass when the missiles hit... its GREAT.

Also... for some odd reason I prefer the nuclear war in Superpower 1 to Defcon.

  • defcon is almost a simpler version of superpowers, a VERY simpler version

  • I disagree.

Superpower discourages nuclear war, even down to the exact same game over screen as Balance of Power.

  • That's a little crude, but she is very alluring. Those luscious lips saying "impact" really do something for me. I've always loved a woman in uniform.

  • @icemachine79 Assuming that uniform is an apron, sure!

  • did the guy really have to keep his thumb so close to the launch button. One slip and they're fucked.

  • lol i noticed that too

  • I can just imagine one guy coming up to the guy with his thumb near the launch button right after hearing the good news then just accidently bumping into the guy launching the missles

  • Alley Sheedy... Yumm! ;-)

  • Hitchcock would be proud!

  • If you want to pretend you're in NORAD try the game DEFCON by Introversion. There are some game play videos of it on you tube.

  • Ever since this movie came out in the late eighties I really wished for a game like DEFCON (took them long enough!!!). It's a great game, lots of fun.

  • I respectfully disagree with you, JasonOfArgo. The real businnes of war is reconstruction after the dust has settled. The neutron bomb didn't had the expected success in military use because of this... if you kill all the people but leave structures intacts there are no businnes for the industrial might of the winner. Sorry for my english, it is not so good.

  • A full thermal nuke attack is a NO WIN situation and will never happen because no one wasnts to destroy valuable resources the other side might have. A neutron bomb would be more likely....it destroys living tissue but leaves inanimate objects alone.

  • I wonder why Colonel Conley waited so long after the first three impacts to ask if there was any impact. Time would have been critical if it had been a real attack, because, even though we still had our bombers and subs, we would need to launch as many remaining ICBMs as posssible for a sufficient retaliation.

  • Probably because he had to account for the blast wave to actually destroy the bases before he could confirm or not confirm the actuality of a nuclear missle salvo hit... That or it's just a Hollywood ploy to lengthen the suspense ;-P

  • i love this scene because my dad was stationed at Grand Forks AFB when this movie came out. My family thinks it's funny that Grand Forks gets blown up!

  • for some reason this remids me of the fallout games....

  • For a full list of the strategies which Joshua runs through after this scene go to mercenary dot org/2006/04. There are a couple of unknowns because someone was in the way of the screen.

  • Of course, right after this, we realize Joshua's about to launch the missiles :D

  • Great scene this is. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • great scene

  • This is easily one of the best scenes from any contemporary movie. Thanks for capturing!
