The issue is not helping people. The issue is *forcing* people to help others. Forcing people is anti-human. Reason, discussion, persuasion, collaboration are the only moral basis of human interaction. Behind government "help" is a gun. That is immoral.

It's pretty pompous of you to assume I don't help people. I gave a very decent amount of money to different charities this past year. And that's my point: helping people is a voluntary choice. When you force it upon people it is immoral because it subjugates by force the productive to the non-productive. Have a nice day.

If helping people were left to volunteers we'd have people starving and dying in the streets. What do you propose, as an alternative to gov aid, for mothers who work multiple jobs but can't afford health care for their children (or themselves?). What about the mentally ill who can't hold a job? Or pregnant women who can't go to a doctor? You really think those people deserve to stay sick or die?

We live in the most philanthropic, generous society in the history of the world. Study after study shows that conservatives give considerably more of their income than liberals do. That being said, the vast majority of people in this country (left and right) have compassion for the mentally ill, sick and poor. We have compassion because God gave us morals. Of course the government should help out with people that can't do things for themselves. But there is a limit to how much should be done.
