I think I understand your point. However, I don't think there ever was any intent to create something "useful", or to demonstrate real self awareness in a machine. At least I didnt perceive it this way. I rather see it as exploration of various basic processes of life through robotics. Simply underlining the fundamental processes from which concience and individuality can be defined. I find it something to be appreciated on a metaphorical level,and not necessarily from an engineering perspective
