@g7npl Classical music is more so about developing themes well then writing them well, so Purcell is more of a criminal for not doing as much with this theme as Britten did.
Secondly, it's a theme and variations? he didn't steal the theme, just like Beethoven didn't steal Diabelli's theme in his "Diabelli Variations".
Pease don't ever speak again, you ignorant filth, you're not worthy of this music, Purcell's or any other kind of decent art for that matter.
@sstuddert Your first two paragraphs are a good reply, but you spoil it with your final riposte, turning yourself into a troll. You can discuss, or put people right without abusing them. Whoever you disagree with, be respectful in your response. Best.
"Hello I'm Simon Rattle. I'm going to be your guide to the orchestra". Creepy. He looks like a bloody extra from Blake's 7.
Frankly I find it all a bit patronising, especially the colour-coordinated shirts for each orchestral group... as if it's a music lesson for the deaf.
Let's look ast the title YOUNG PERSON's Guide to the Orchestrra. It was written to help people understand the parts and workings of an orchestra, which it does BRILLIANTLY. The uniforms, lighting, and camera angles in this performance and recording emphasize this very well.
The intro reminds me less of "Blake's 7", which had a dark, dystopian theme, than "Masterpiece Theatre", but what's wrong with that?
Don't be fooled by the title. This composition is for all ages and is better understood by those who are not children. It is taught at the college level and is a wonderful piece to examine and analyze in courses such as Music Appreciation.
Do you know if this is available on DVD to purchase anywhere (online)? I have been looking for this to purchase for our college's collection, but so far I can only find the CD recording with Rattle. There is another version on DVD (older), but I cannot find a DVD with Rattle.
well, perhaps it is too slow and ceremonial; Rattle makes his presentation in a very dettached way, though it is very informative... I think that if you are going to tell young people -children or teenagers- about something as far away from them as an orchestra, you have to get their attention with more dinamism, of course using Britten's work as a frame or starting point...

I saw Sir Simon conducting the CBSO in a children's school concert in 97.
It was a brilliant performance of Sherezade.

Hi alejandra379! Interested to know how you feel it's not correctly oriented for young audiences. :-)

Yes, Simon Rattle isn't a very good speaker in this. Boring.

Must be a very interesting documentary, but somehow I dont think it is correctly oriented for young audiences... in my humble opinion...
