I lived 3 miles from the NYS fair. What a mess. Constant flashing green lightning. 100+ mph winds. I forgot to close a window in the bedroom, ran in to close it and papers and stuff were blowing around in a circle. No power for 4 days.
This one was too far north for me on Long Island but there was a second derecho later that afternoon that hit PA/NJ/NYC/LI. I've never seen the sky get so dark so fast.
I was 14 when this happened. I just remember the sheer intensity of the whole thing. I'll never forget the sound of the windows on my house as if they were going to be sucked out of their frames. Surprisingly there wasn't much damage on my street.
I was attending SUNY Morrisville when this happened. I'll never forget that night. 13 years later and it still freaks me out. I remember watching this thing roll in, starting as a thin line of "strobe lights" on the horizon and just coming in like a bat out of hell...within minutes. So much damage...we had three days of no classes because of it..and for good reason.
Hey didn't you guys get hit with another Derecho in like 2002 or 2003? I remember one crossing all of NY state and then dying out just before it crossed into my state (CT)... but the lightning I saw with that system as it approached was prolific
@MyJonny25 The worst of the storm was north of there, but the tail end might have affected the city somehow; You know, some lightning maybe gusty winds and a downpour. As far as I know there weren't any damage assesments there.
@msteere132 I was located in Broome County when this was happening terrible thing to remember before my mom and my dad and I were going to sleep many EAS's that day terrible
geddes got hit real bad i watched a tree actualy bend and touch the ground and it looked like my neighbors house dissapeared !! solvay really got the worst of it all !!
nice . . . it's weird how there's severe thunderstorm warnings on the TV and shown on the radar while soothing jazz music plays in the background. I love the jazz during the local forecast. BTW I live in Roch. NY and I was 9 years old when this hit. It killed two people at the state fairgrounds in Syracuse. Thank heavens it wasn't during the day when the fair was going on. It was also supposed to be the last day of the fair. Thanks for posting this!

What's the song starting at around 0:31? I remember that one from when I was a kid...always wondered if I'd hear it again.
I remember this storm too...it hit us right as soon as the Jets lost that overtime opener in San Fran.
