@dennyd71 are you kidding me? 7 years ago i was in year 6 at school and had to write a fictional autobiography. i did mine about BMX and my mum recomended the title "Ride of my life"
for those who do not know, at this time there was no such thing as a rider who only rode flat or a rider who only rode pipes.you where expected to do it all.that was freestyle. in a freestyle compe you had quarter pipe, flatland and mini ramps although i believe by this time mini ramps had been phased out. could be wrong same with the old school bike. we did not have flat specific or ramp specific we had freestylers one bike to do it all.
Yeah, it's moved on a lot...but this was 1987, and he was 14 or something at the time. A year later he was inventing most of the tricks performed today, and he's not even a flatlander! And he single handedly resurrected the dead sport of BMX and made it what it is today. When he did that, there was one BMX magazine left and bike companies were going bust all over the place. He raised it from the dead...the man is a total legend. We all owe him a lot of respect.
@hondahp18 we knew we where witnessing a legend dude .he was already dominating the amateur ranks. we knew as soon as he went pro he was going to dethrone all our favourite riders. it was a sad but exciting time.
He was good at the ground, hardly put his foot down. Also didn't have a rotor as he kept spinning his bars to get his cable back straight, I notice lots of riders back then did that. Very technical ride. Good video!
@demazphantom "Back when people knew what the fuck they were doing"? If your insinuating that bmx was better back then, well that's absurd. This sport isn't like music where one could argue a certain eras superiority over the next. Every single facet of riding has evolved 10 fold, whether its flatland trick difficulty, the crazy air on dirt or kids tripping pegs altogether and pedal/sprocket grinding monster rails. As long as the next generation is interested it will continue to get better
@VeeDeLarge Cool story bro. If you look at the kids these days; You will get my point. =\ Seriously, if you have a bmx and can jump on it; Your automatically cool. I agree with you on it expanding though; But it's mainly been for the worst.
I myself was pretty good as a kid but it gets boring when everyone around you poses doing tailwhips and crap...You could understand my negativity.
Truth be told I was kinda waiting on your reply. I looked up some of the newer flatland comps and I ABSOLUTELY have to agree with you in regards to flat. It seemed a bit repetitive, albeit difficult and impressive. I felt like everything I was watching was a setup for the inevitable 20 second spin. I also found it strange that there are quite a few competitive riders that favor pedal less frames. All a part of the evolution I suppose. 28 and I feel old. Boooo!
@VeeDeLarge HA! Man; You have to have seen the skate park comps I've been too! Kids telling me to get out cause I was doing multiple mistys and superman bar spins. Hell yeah It's repetitive, but how many people can land them a lot =\ I was kinda hoping for your reply too, it's interesting getting other peoples opinions.
I'm sorta too old to be getting back into bikes ether....a lot of people tell me I should give it up..
His final move is called ''street surfing''. It's an old school move, I know, but do people still consider to be impressive? I hope so because it's the best trick I got.
Does anyone know how to tell the make of a bmx bike i got given a frame and tyres but there are no stickers just a number underneath if you can help send me a message
right after this stage a lot of guys got into scuffing and more rolling linking stuff. But this era was fun too, lots of trick circles and hanging out in parking lots, but I guess that's still the same.
that seat is up to the handlebars haha. i wasnt even alive then and i love old school bmx, mainly old school flatland, although i like new-style park and vert bmx better. its all opinion, but what's not opinion is that matt hoffman is the beast
