Why would anyone buy cds? You buy a cd with a mediocre forgetable song and the rest is complete garbage. Whatever happened to bands and real artists who would put out albums full of hits that we still listen to 30 years later? I turn on the radio and every song sounds exactly the same and they are all terrible. Nothing even worth pirating.
And here in 2010, physical media sales are AGAIN down 11% (through May) from 2009 levels, and digital sales are actually slightly down even. The main money machine nowadays is from touring and merchandise; as tour promotors have a similar hierachy compared to record labels. Live Nation is like a UMG, and attracts the best stars. Unfortunately, the music quality is another lost cause.
The reason why CD's dying is not because of technology, it's because bands drop albums with only 1 or 2 good songs on there. So i'd rathere just buy the song for 99 cent....And plus these major labels are anti-creativity, thats why they don't give artists 100% creative control. They have contracts that say the label makes the finale decision of what goes on the album. They'll hold meetings discussing your career goals...But you won't be there.
our youtube, myspace reality has not helped music. The shit that's coming out now lacks depth and creativity. In this manner, our American idol, iPod, laptop culture is having a detrimental effect on creativity, perhaps paradoxically. There are a lot of negatives that go with the internet. read Andrew Keen.
Artist have always had only 1 or 2 hits on albums since the beginning of time! I've been buyin music since the 80's and people were complaining about the same thing. Just buy the CD and support the artist, or youll be left with ameture artist.
I completely agree with you. You should to talk to John Stossel about this (he did intervue RIAA CEO Cary Sherman on 20/20's "Give me a Break").
You are completely right at all levels. Music sells were up in 1999, but now they are at their lowest peak because of the RIAA & the people who support the RIAA. Everyone was against this law from the start---but US Congress passed the law.
Fuck the RIAA & MPAA & the people who support them!
I think it was the DMCA. It was past in 1998, but was updated in 2003. After the fall of Napster, in 2003, the RIAA & Congress passed it to stop the traffic of p2p & torrent downloading of music. Also the DMCA forced iTunes to change its attributes---forcing all us to pay for music. B/c of the RIAA's Copyright Paranoia all other corporations who have joined their fascist illuminati crusade. As a result, many of these business has suffered, look at the Sound Scan statistics, they tell all!
youtube, and myspace fucking suck too. So does fuckin ipod,. have you noticed that since the internet came out, the quality of art has gone down? Why do you think that is?
what is this guy talking about? I buy Cd's at least twice a month and i know ALOT of people who do also... THE CD WILL NEVER DIE! wtf are you talking about?
lol The only people who uses CDs for their music are Djs, people who don't have computers, & the corruptables (aka RIAA, MPAA). But overall, CDs are a thing of the past. I burn discs because I have CD turntables, but that doesn't mean I can't still make mix sessions. There is a lot of DJ software out there that I can use to make mix sessions. The Internet has changed everything in our economy, but monolpolies are ruining the positive outcomes that can result from it.
Its not the cd. The mistake that technology made was software, the computer and P2P sharing.
No matter what media you use, as long as audio can be generated out of it, it can be braught into the computer and put on P2P sharing. There are more hackers out there who are way above what the industry can do. Its not the media that you use. It is inevitable for the music industry to die and its well deserved for them! I havent baught an album since 1996 and i put it on limewire. i dont care!
Thanks GearMonkey! I just always thought most people thought like me... the internet is and will be the dominant form of media. My eyes have been opened and now I see there are many powerful execs who don't innately believe that. That's a dangerous position in today's world economy.
I want to know what happen to the good ol' 8-track man. That was the bomb!
I completely agree with everything you said.. and very insightful indeed! Now I'm going to take some time to think about how I can incorporate that info to make my online business better! I have some ideas...
Kinda ironic that you say CDs are a dying dog while reading from a magazine.

The real music is being suppressed because dumb music creates ignorance.
