I just noticed that you're from North Carolina. For a more serious look at the performing arts, read Diane Solway's acclaimed biography of Joffrey dancer, Edward Stierle, "A Dance Against Time." While it's not about musical theater, I think you'll recognize a lot of it, including the backstabbing. I'm not in the arts and don't know much about dance, but I found it to be a real page turner. And you can get it on Amazon for 1 cent. :)

As a NYer trying to make it in musical theater, you should read one of Joe Keenan's laugh-out-loud novels (start with the first). He was an Emmy-winning writer/producer of Frasier. I've seen people laughing hysterically while reading it on the subway.
