A 1999 KX500 is 10-30lbs lighter than any 450 4 stroke, which are the only bikes they ever really race in supercross, if your talking 250 two strokes they are extinct in supercross, and still nearly the same weight. And how are they too big? they are the same size, if not smaller than most bikes now. A KX or CR 500 will do anything any other bike will do, but they will do it better. (unless you don't want to wheelie all the time)

The reason you see the big dogs (lets face it were talking 650's) in the desert racing is the fact that it's more reliable with another 150cc's to make almost as much power and the heavier bike and frame makes it less twitchy

@bilbombe Porting and jetting is what is important. Revs aren't everything. I wired my KX5 to a tach and it was hitting around 12/14k. I am not sure how they are stock cause I had a few nice mods, but with tall gearing it would hit around 120MPH, and with my standard low gearing, I was toping at 85/88MPH...yea I put a speedo on it that was calibrated. I actually had the title transfered and was street legal in NY :-). last test 0-80mph was < 4 seconds

Just 80, 125 and 250. 500's were good toys, but I could never ride one to enough of its potential to race them. At 140lbs, they kicked my butt. They were a good training tool though. Riding 125's was a walk in the park after man handling the beastly 500.

I used to have one of these! brutal, but not as powerful as my cr 500 in the midrange, which made the cr my favourite. Had loads of fun on the kx though! Those were real-men machines: they tried to kill you any chance they got. Recently rode a crf 450...damn...what happened with sheer brutal power of mx bikes??? This is lame ass shit...

man dont listen to anyone that talks shit and has no proof, you have respect for the bike and thats the only thing that keeps people that ride them alive, i know this cause i have a 96 kx500 and yes they are mean and you think you can break them guess again they break you. nice video keep on riding.

it's a weird powerband compared to my 250. It feels like all torque, not much over rev, but everytime you shift it pulls the next gear like nothing

most later and bigger bore 2 strokes have powervalves , i had an old kx 100 i think it was a 1990 back when i was younger it dint have power valves every bike iv had since has them ?

dude kawasaki makes a such more stronger bike than hondas 500. i rode a kx 250 and it felt like a cr500's power.

@motocrossracer216 They had an open class long ago. It's arguable whether or not the AMA was the cause of the death of the class or if it was Suzuki and/or Yamaha. The stereotype back then was "The 125 class was for schoolboys, and the 250 class was for paperboys, and the 500’s were for men."
The AMA dropped the national championship in the "500" class over the winter of '93.
There still is an open class, the heart of it still beats, it just goes "thump thump"

Used to ride a Husky 2-stroke 500 cc but sold it, biggest mistake of my life.
Tried modern 4-strokes, but they feel too user friendly and forgiving.
I like that my 2-stroke seems to hate me and want to hurt me :)

@sneakerpimp13 I always raced team green back in the day. I owned a couple KX 500s. Never raced them. Just 80, 125 and 250. 500's were good toys, but I could never ride one to enough of its potential to race them. At 140lbs, they kicked my butt. They were a good training tool though. Riding 125's was a walk in the park after man handling the beastly 500.

@ezelder I agree, they make good toys and excercise bikes.
I like that you can go half throttle and the bike responds directly and you can go full throttle and it just explodes.
I was taught to respect a bike, beginning with a 50 cc Italjet, and I think that made me like, respect and not push a 500 beyond what my skill level is.
I used to ride it on dirt roads and in terrain similar to what you ride on in your video.
Good clean fun and a 500 lasts extremely long.
Just needs oil and gasoline :)

@ezelder im only 140 i race my 500 got over 70 motocross trophys hillclimbs sanddrags trails im on my 3rd kx500 went from an kx80 straight to the 5 yee shut alot of big mouths up love it
