Carson wanted Letterman to host after he left. Leno got the job instead. Letterman moved to CBS to compete with Leno.

What drives me nuts about Letterman is how he always "waits" for a laugh before moving on to the next joke. Leno is more natural, he doesn't do that. Its like Letterman is "forcing" the crowd to laugh...not a sign of a good comedian!

Comedy is about timing. Letterman knows his routine and what makes it work. The space in-between gives the audience a break to think about his next joke. That is why he has been hosting his own nighttime show for 26 years, not including the daytime show he had for a year. Leno is pure middle America. He may have high ratings, but that does not make him great. Letterman will go down in history next to Carson as the top two TV latenight show hosts of all time. Leno is not in the picture.
