just brought home the j.p. dano 12 and took a pass at this ...spot checking my self against your VERY good rendering of just the guitar..hopefully i wasn't as far behind you as my li' ole dano is to that icon you're slingin'...the smiths ? sheesh..i'll be happy if i just get this as near perfect as you
Very nice - you play it a little different than I do, and it's nice to learn something from other good players like you. My video response is on a 330/12.
This after almost two years is still my favorite video of yours. This is my favorite R.E.M. song of all time, but your guitar-playing on this song is more.. how should I say it? It's just more beautiful than Peter Buck's. I would always love to see more R.E.M. covers if you ever have the time. Thank you for all your music and covers and have a great Christmas.
This looks like a Rickenbacker 360/12. Originally this was done on a Rickenbacker 330/6, Peter Buck. Like the Rickenbacker series by the way. I want to buy one.
Did Peter Buck ever state he used a 330 instead of his 360 JG on Driver 8? R.E.M.'s version really has a lot of acoustic guitar up in the mix if I'm not mistaking. I doubt PLB used a 330.
In one concert in Germany, I think Hamburg, Peter Buck used a cream colored 330. It sounded very similar to the actual recording, but i would have never guessed a 340. What link is it?
Masterful. I am a songwriter but not a player. This is the best Driver 8 I have heard other than REM's original. Be great if you had a singer. You certainly taught me a lesson or 2 but in the long run I will stick to making an unofficial followup to our first. Great job!
It has a bit of effect i think. The vintage sound still incorperated into todays Rics is kind of a Jingle-Jangly sound. But it has just a bit of overdrive, I think not sure, but it still has that jingly sound you can hear. Unique and great sound. Have always wanted in in that same Jetglo color. Your a great guitarist by the way dude. Can u put up of how you it this way because mineis not this koolsounding.
I don't usually respond to people playing covers of songs....but that was great. Do you write any of your own stuff? I'm a drummer and I wish I could find some talent like that!!
I cant stop myself watching this video its such an insperiation to my own guitaring ability's.
I'm in awe at how you took such a simple strum along song and made it so complex with picking and added notes to the chord mixed along with the strumming itself. It's not so much a cover more like a complete re working of a classic.
Thanks very much for this comment. Though I didn't realise I added anything to what's on the record. But if you say so! :) I generally mix a bit of picking/hammering-on into chords when I'm playing a rhythmic part, as a habit. I will podcast it soon.
You' re so amazing. I don't like the song, but You're great. Soon playing on world tour? Planed something this way? You're better than R.E.M. I Love You.
You wouldn't happen to know how to play 'Wolves, Lower', or 'Harborcoat'..... I've always been curious to see if someone other than Peter Buck play those songs. xD
i have grown up loving both the smiths and REM as my two favourite bands so its fantastic to see someone playing their greatest songs so flawlessly on the correct brand of guitar! all hail the smiths, REM and the rickenbacker! keep up the great work!
For those checking out R.E.M. for the first time I recommend 'Murmur' and 'Document' unreservedly. The album that 'Driver 8' is from is probably more of an aquired taste, quite gloomy overall ('Fables of the Reconstruction'). The album 'Green' is pretty good and has one song called 'World Leader Pretend' that doesn't seem like anything special at first but is actually great.
I think Peter Buck's Rickenbacker guitar sound peaked on Life's Rich Pageant. There are some great twangy tunes worth learning on there, Cuyahoga being one of my favorites.
Cheers as always... This is the 330 (the famous curved hole has no white edge around it). My 330 has high-gain pickups (little bumps on them), the 360 has toaster pickups (two slots in each).
This song has some things in common with the Smiths, but that's because both guitarists (and bassists) have some similar influences from way back (the Beatles and the Byrds, and McCartney's ground-breaking loud melodic basslines).
I think it's Em-Am-G-G/F#. Funny to me that you get so much of the much harder Johnny Marr stuff and miss this lay-up. :P
Thanks for all the vids though. The Smiths pieces are very helpful (and impressive). Where were you and Youtube when I first started playing guitar 20 years ago?

It has no binding whatsoever like most 360s have... both have their good sides. I yet have to find any bad sides...

I did some checking - in some 80s tv "performances" PLB "played" a 340 JG
