  • Awesome!

  • VERY BYRDS - love Rick

  • sweet axe

  • Hey danielearwicker! Have you ever tried to do "Country Feedback"? Not the album version but the one on "Road Movie" with the ending solo.

  • Oh yeah....very nice

  • Well done.

  • Sweet guitar!

  • Very nice - you play it a little different than I do, and it's nice to learn something from other good players like you. My video response is on a 330/12.

  • This after almost two years is still my favorite video of yours. This is my favorite R.E.M. song of all time, but your guitar-playing on this song is more.. how should I say it? It's just more beautiful than Peter Buck's. I would always love to see more R.E.M. covers if you ever have the time. Thank you for all your music and covers and have a great Christmas.

  • Buck probably used this kind of guitar live, but the one on the original recording was a Suzuki Three-S (I played it)

  • nice job, a byrds version if they only could lol.

  • you my friend are a technically proficient guitarist...

    great cover !

  • This looks like a Rickenbacker 360/12. Originally this was done on a Rickenbacker 330/6, Peter Buck. Like the Rickenbacker series by the way. I want to buy one.

  • It's a 330/12.

  • Ah, did not see the sharp edges. What do you think is better? 330 or 360?

  • Comment removed

  • It has no binding whatsoever like most 360s have... both have their good sides. I yet have to find any bad sides...

  • Did Peter Buck ever state he used a 330 instead of his 360 JG on Driver 8? R.E.M.'s version really has a lot of acoustic guitar up in the mix if I'm not mistaking. I doubt PLB used a 330.

  • I did some checking - in some 80s tv "performances" PLB "played" a 340 JG

  • In one concert in Germany, I think Hamburg, Peter Buck used a cream colored 330. It sounded very similar to the actual recording, but i would have never guessed a 340. What link is it?

  • I played the guitar today and made a film of it.

  • I don't think so...

I played the guitar used by Peter Buck today. I'm a very lucky fella.

  • Masterful. I am a songwriter but not a player. This is the best Driver 8 I have heard other than REM's original. Be great if you had a singer. You certainly taught me a lesson or 2 but in the long run I will stick to making an unofficial followup to our first. Great job!

  • hey, just an REM fan, and not a musician myself, but I love the sound you captured!

  • You can hear faint hints of the Alarm,Marching On, in the chorus,,Nice

  • This is such a great video. I watch it every few weeks and love the sound every time.

  • I Wish rics were cheaper, like $300

  • dont we all?

  • yeah :( but you have a ric copy so youre lucky!

  • Does anyone know if that is the natural Rik sound, or does he run it through some effects? Whatever it is, I like it and I'm getting a Rik anyway!

  • It sounds pretty clean!! Thats what Riks sound like...Unique!

  • It has a bit of effect i think. The vintage sound still incorperated into todays Rics is kind of a Jingle-Jangly sound. But it has just a bit of overdrive, I think not sure, but it still has that jingly sound you can hear. Unique and great sound. Have always wanted in in that same Jetglo color. Your a great guitarist by the way dude. Can u put up of how you it this way because mineis not this koolsounding.

  • Sounds like a little bit of chorus thrown in there too...

  • Yeah, I believe after the riff, its an open Em to Am, G, Gsus.

  • No, there is no Gsus, but there is a B.

  • Em, Am, G, G/F# deweypug

  • Great job and great Rik sound!

  • I...like it. thanks!

  • nice rickenbacker. Would you suggest one?

  • some chords are slightly wrong, but it was a good cover, well done dude.

  • really captured that southern yearning....

  • Awesome.

  • Thanks for putting this up on my birthday. :) Like it, good!

  • And the sound quality was unusually high for a YouTube Video. Very Pro.

  • Nice, fast rockin version.

  • Is it Peter Buck's guitar?

  • great job!!!! and how many guitars do u have behind u/????

  • superb. I wish i could play like that.

  • great job man I loved it!

  • give me your Guitar!!

  • Spec-Freaking-tacular!!

  • That sounded cool. One of my favourite R.E.M. songs.

  • great version. first time i've heard you rush like that, though.

    you ARE mortal! lol.

  • Whoa, S-L-O-W down and pick more carefully. Nice sound, though.

  • Nice version.

I just prefer the original tone, but actually this one you're playin' is better for my voice :)

    gongratz

  • DUDE!! That rocked!! I'll b lookin for ya in Billboard soon.

  • Great work. Smooth.. and the guitars pretty cool too.

  • yeah thats a rickenbacker right? same kind peter buck uses

  • Wrong. He uses a 360.

By the way, cool vid. I agree with the Smiths comment: This Charming Man is HARD.

  • that was so worth the watch. awesome dude.

  • Man that Rick sounds awesome!

  • Man that Rick sounds awesome!

  • Good stuff. Post the chord arrangements. The tab I have is very minimal.

  • Is that a twelve string? Sounds pretty chunky since I always use a six string.

  • good job

  • My favourite REM song played on the guitar it was written for. Great job mate.

  • I Love this song, especially guitars. You know what you are doing, absolutely fabulous. Greetings from Finlad!

  • I can stop watching this... You're style is so cool and it's REM... Thanks!

  • wow, the tone of that rich is unbelievable, that is the greatest sound in rock music, oh and fantastic playing by the way too.

  • Very nice!

  • I don't usually respond to people playing covers of songs....but that was great. Do you write any of your own stuff? I'm a drummer and I wish I could find some talent like that!!

  • good tune, good work

  • Hahah absolutly amazing...

Heads up for all the albums at ones ^^

If you for some reason still are bored enough to do requests try She just wants to be (from Reveal)

  • Yeah Harborcoat recorded in the same fashion would make my day.

  • Can you play Harborcoat?

  • Can we please have this on the podcast?

  • I just need to say.

I cant stop myself watching this video its such an insperiation to my own guitaring ability's.

I'm in awe at how you took such a simple strum along song and made it so complex with picking and added notes to the chord mixed along with the strumming itself. It's not so much a cover more like a complete re working of a classic.

  • Thanks very much for this comment. Though I didn't realise I added anything to what's on the record. But if you say so! :) I generally mix a bit of picking/hammering-on into chords when I'm playing a rhythmic part, as a habit. I will podcast it soon.

  • You' re so amazing. I don't like the song, but You're great. Soon playing on world tour? Planed something this way? You're better than R.E.M. I Love You.

But the stream could be lil faster, wa!!!

  • Thanks! No I'm not planning a world tour right now, first I need to work out how to play eight guitar parts simultaneously.

  • good janglish sound man!

  • thats an awesome guitar, i have the 6 string version and mines the "Liverpool" Vintage series. The sound is amazing to what you are playing.

  • what kind of amp are you using?

  • Amazing sound!!! I wish I had a rickenbacker too!!!

  • I love this song, but please play it on a decent 6-string, LOL!

  • its nice to hear Buck's melodys, isolated .one of the reasons I love rem. U played it realy good!

  • You wouldn't happen to know how to play 'Wolves, Lower', or 'Harborcoat'..... I've always been curious to see if someone other than Peter Buck play those songs. xD

  • Wow, I love how Driver 8 sounds on a 12-string Ric. The bass for this song sounds just as great on my 4003 Ric xD. Great job!

  • i have grown up loving both the smiths and REM as my two favourite bands so its fantastic to see someone playing their greatest songs so flawlessly on the correct brand of guitar! all hail the smiths, REM and the rickenbacker! keep up the great work!

  • That does it! I am going to get a Rickenbocker

  • Nice! How about (Don't Go Back To) Rockville? or #9 Dream? I always thought R.E.M. were the Stateside equivalent of the Smiths.

  • For those checking out R.E.M. for the first time I recommend 'Murmur' and 'Document' unreservedly. The album that 'Driver 8' is from is probably more of an aquired taste, quite gloomy overall ('Fables of the Reconstruction'). The album 'Green' is pretty good and has one song called 'World Leader Pretend' that doesn't seem like anything special at first but is actually great.

  • I think Peter Buck's Rickenbacker guitar sound peaked on Life's Rich Pageant. There are some great twangy tunes worth learning on there, Cuyahoga being one of my favorites.

  • that was awesome, never was really into R.E.M. but i think i'll check them out now.

  • Cheers as always... This is the 330 (the famous curved hole has no white edge around it). My 330 has high-gain pickups (little bumps on them), the 360 has toaster pickups (two slots in each).

This song has some things in common with the Smiths, but that's because both guitarists (and bassists) have some similar influences from way back (the Beatles and the Byrds, and McCartney's ground-breaking loud melodic basslines).

  • I think it's Em-Am-G-G/F#. Funny to me that you get so much of the much harder Johnny Marr stuff and miss this lay-up. :P

Thanks for all the vids though. The Smiths pieces are very helpful (and impressive). Where were you and Youtube when I first started playing guitar 20 years ago?

  • Great! I love this song. Don't u think this one is very very Smitish?

  • mike stipe puts me off r.e.m, you shed a good light on their music, thanks.

  • beautiful sound from the 360,really enjoyed it

  • brilliant..i have a version of country feedback i think you will like. i must post for you soon as i get it all together to post video

  • You're standing up! A gig can't be far away. Beautiful as always.
