I really love this song, its just so comforting and TRUE. For whatever interpretation I have for it on that day. I feel like my Catholicism opened me to really pay attention to this Angel's song. Just my musings..
Whatever belief or non-belief makes you feel most at peace, is what is right. I have friends who became Christian and felt more complete, and I also have friends who after a long struggle with the church became atheists and are much more comfortable and at peace with that.

So, I just found out today that one of my best friends from Bible college is suffering from bone cancer and the doctors don't think he's going to make it through the weekend. I haven't seen him for four years and he's all the way in Vancouver, which means I won't be able to make it to the funeral. This song made it all right.

I'm an atheist. This song inspires me. I don't necessarily look at it in a religious light. It also has a very vivid human light to me, the emotions are ones everyones felt, even if not in relation to god. But, the religious aspect is quite beautiful as well, I'm glad I can appreciate it.
This song is so empowering and makes you really think about what you have done in your life and how you can turn the wrongs you've done into rights that you can/will do. Regina Spektor really has a way with her voice and lyrics that can really make you think about things. Whether you're and atheist or Christian or polytheistic or and religion out there you can get some sort of wonderful message from this beautiful song. -3
I, personally, am Atheist, but I think that this song can still be just as meaningful. I think it can mean that we so often take everything around us for granted, and it takes a disaster or a tragedy to make us realise how comfortable we'd gotten with the things in our life, even though at any moment everything could be taken away.

We have made God so freakin fake. God is easy to handle. God fits in our jokes. God can be ushered into Sunday and shut with your Bible. God created the world until you read Scientific American. God just shows up before bed to take a quick prayer. Heck, God only matters when you're arguing with people on YouTube that think otherwise.
But I don't know how to express how much _more_ He is than that. How much we were made for God. What I see in this song is a hate of what we've degraded God to.
What I hear in this song is that God is no joke. It seems like she keeps pointing to those moments we're all on our knees and how close we come to God at those points... and then how easily we blow Him off as a punchline when everything's alright. This song isnt about God having a sick sense of humor- its about us.

this song makes me angry but i can't put my finger on it. i get the feeling that god lets horrible things happen and is kinda like 'HA! laugh now'. i don't feel encouraged to worship him but that its kinda normal for these daily tragedies to happen and he just amuses over human suffering. it just makes me feel that god really doesn't care unless you 'laugh with him' . i don't feel any kind of grace or mercy i just feel that the world is horrible and we just need to deal with it.

Why do people think that something bad needs to happen to them for them to be atheist or agnostic? I am agnostic and the reason I do not have a religion is because I simply do not believe that people should base their morals on something they do not know is true and that many rituals and stories do not make sense to me and I'm sure the same is true for many other atheists/agnostics. They just believe that it is the truth just like religious people.

And even if you are atheist, you find yourself thinking, 'Please, don't let it be so.'
At least, that's my opinion, but I'm catholic so I don't really know what atheists think. :)

Don't make generalizations about people, regardless if you add IMO/IMHO to the end, that just makes you sound conceited. You get farther admitting ignorance and learning truth.

I'm an atheist. This song inspires me. I don't necessarily look at it in a religious light. It also has a very vivid human light to me, the emotions are ones everyones felt, even if not in relation to god. But, the religious aspect is quite beautiful as well, I'm glad I can appreciate it.

This song is so empowering and makes you really think about what you have done in your life and how you can turn the wrongs you've done into rights that you can/will do. Regina Spektor really has a way with her voice and lyrics that can really make you think about things. Whether you're and atheist or Christian or polytheistic or and religion out there you can get some sort of wonderful message from this beautiful song. -3

I, personally, am Atheist, but I think that this song can still be just as meaningful. I think it can mean that we so often take everything around us for granted, and it takes a disaster or a tragedy to make us realise how comfortable we'd gotten with the things in our life, even though at any moment everything could be taken away.
Just wanted any non-God believers to think about this before they click the dislike button.

I am not offended by your point of view because if I was that means that I would be offended by something I dont believe in. There are going to be things you dont like in this world, but you're just going to have to get over it. We have made God so freakin fake. God is easy to handle. God fits in our jokes. God can be ushered into Sunday and shut with your Bible. God created the world until you read Scientific American. God just shows up before bed to take a quick prayer. Heck, God only matters when you're arguing with people on YouTube that think otherwise.
But I don't know how to express how much _more_ He is than that. How much we were made for God. What I see in this song is a hate of what we've degraded God to.

It seems like she keeps pointing to those moments we're all on our knees and how close we come to God at those points... and then how easily we blow Him off as a punchline when everything's alright. This song isnt about God having a sick sense of humor- its about us.

this song makes me angry but i can't put my finger on it. i get the feeling that god lets horrible things happen and is kinda like 'HA! laugh now'. i don't feel encouraged to worship him but that its kinda normal for these daily tragedies to happen and he just amuses over human suffering. it just makes me feel that god really doesn't care unless you 'laugh with him' . i don't feel any kind of grace or mercy i just feel that the world is horrible and we just need to deal with it.

"INRI" by Psyclon Nine shares a similar sentiment. the difference being that INRI is speaking against god whereas Laughing is conversely in favour of the concept of god. the intrinsic belief in both is that no one truly believes unless they are in crisis. ergo, religious belief is naught but a crutch. those who do not possess the strength of will to believe in themselves innately believe in something more powerful because they are helpless. the truth is we are each our own 'god'.

I really don't like what catholic church did on feudalism age, killing who didn't believe in God or church's things. I think everyone must decide what to believe or not to believe. I say that I'm catholic just cause i'm used, but actually I believe in some things that are not catholic and others that are. I'm actually loosing my belief on catholic DOCTRINES.

Why do people think that something bad needs to happen to them for them to be atheist or agnostic? I am agnostic and the reason I do not have a religion is because I simply do not believe that people should base their morals on something they do not know is true and that many rituals and stories do not make sense to me and I'm sure the same is true for many other atheists/agnostics. They just believe that it is the truth just like religious people.

@Brittischteasipper I see it this way: she's saying that everybody is good at saying they don't believe in God and that he's just a fairy tale, but when times are hard no one is laughing anymore, because when you are really down, no matter what you think, you have to believe in something to give you hope. And even if you are atheist, you find yourself thinking, 'Please, don't let it be so.'
At least, that's my opinion, but I'm catholic so I don't really know what atheists think. :)
