There is nothing funner than shooting a good old fashioned military surplus rifle! I had some mild steel core surplus shells that found their way into the the hill side. From what I understand, only bullets with hardened steel or tungsten cores are armor piecing, and the bullets with mild steel cores are not considered to be AP.
Mild steel is not "armor". Those rounds bounce off of 1/4" level III rifle plates even after 6 shots to the same exact spot at 50ft. 7.62x54R, even the mild steel core rounds (which is most surplus), are not "armor piercing".
wtf are you doing pulling the rifle off your shoulder to cycle the bolt? DUDE. I'm new to bolt actions rifles, and it still seemed to be common sense. lock that shit in your shoulder! Cool video ;)
@accordv6er wtf are you doing posting about something you don't understand then? DUDE. It is a straight bolt Mosin, the bolt is hard as hell to work ESPECIALLY when against the shoulder. You would lose your sight picture trying to work the bolt from the shoulder anyways AND it would take longer. That is just how you do it with a straight bolt Mosin. Maybe since you are a "bolt action novice" you should not try to flame someone who is actually doing the right thing, noob.
@keithmnovak Sure dude. whatever... or I'll just post a video of me shooting while maintaining a hell of a lot better sight picture than pulling it from your shoulder. I might be new to bolt actions rifles, but sure as hell not to shooting, oh btw, this round is rated to penetrate .2" of mild steel at 600yards... so yeah. And if I'm not mistaken, level three rifle plates, are DESIGNED to stop high velocity 7.62... And I wasn't flaming for the record, I was lightheartedly providing a suggestion
@accordv6er You were flaming "DUDE! wtf! why are you shooting fo f'd up dude?", this isn't your dad's Rem 770 this is a tough gun to cycle, lets see you do it with this gun, I can cycle any smooth Rem 700 SPS all day keeping sight picture but it won't happen with this. .2" mild steel is not considered "armor" by any credible source.. or real life for that matter. As I was saying level III steel armor is "hardened". Regular pot metal steel is NOT armor... so yeah.
@keithmnovak First of all, my dad doesn't have any guns. XD secondly, I would very much like a 700SPS, but will probably get a savage instead. Thirdly, I have a video, cycling my mosin, a 91/30, if there are differences in the action I'm not aware of them, but I had no difficulty shooting it. First time ever firing it, (and any bolt action weapon at that, well, minus freaking .22s), is the only video I have, unfortunately, I'm in uniform, and I'm not comfortable posting. If you add me I will
@keithmnovak gladly upload it, with friends as viewers. Critique and help on technique are welcome. I didn't see you specified steel and amour, my bad there.
@accordv6er If you can keep a sight picture while cucling a 91/30 you have a bent bolt or "sniper" bolt model, which is only about 1% of mosins made. Straight bolt, which is the vast majority of all mosins, have a short bold that when loaded ready to fire the bolt sticks straight to the 3 o'clock, and when open sticks straight up to the 12 o'clock, blocking the sights from view, this guy has a straight bolt m44. The short bolt coupled with the fact its straights makes it much more...
@accordv6er ... difficult to cycle and everyone I have seen and myself cycle a straight bolt much much faster bringing it down. It's a tough bolt to use period, some need to be "slapped" out of place with a half closed fist. A quick person can cycle them and reacquire very quickly, actually. You should check out the level III plates, they are a great amount better than GI ceramic plates. What "uniform" are you in? Service?
@accordv6er Oh, and by the way, I wasn't being a smart ass just to be an asshole. Half of it was using your same mannerism's to highlight the fact you were jumping on this guy when he is actually in the right. Just do more research before thinking you are right based off of incomplete information.
@keithmnovak also, go look at the best snipers in the world, the best marksman... they don't pull the rifle out of their shooting position to cycle the bolt... So maybe, stop being an arrogant know it all before you comment on something that I was half jokingly (but a good suggestion) throwing out there.
@accordv6er The best sniper the world has ever seen used a open sighted mosin, I guaranteed when standing (or running) and shooting he brought it down to cycle the bolt. You suggestion was NOT a good suggestion, as it is not feasible or in any way better for this particular gun or just about any straight bolt military rifle for that matter. Do you understand what a straight bolt is? It goes straight up in your sight path when you cycle it. You cannot keep the sight picture anyways.
It will start with the semi autos and so called assault weapons, then it will be the manual operated arms. politicians are smart enough to restrict your rights slowly. Stand up and strangle off those elements that try to turn this nation into a police welfare state.
Usually everyone gets thee mousens from big 5 I got an m91/30 moisen for 106 bucks!!! And it's got a longer barrel which is better for long range the m44 is tiny
I have a Hungarian M44 I purchased un issued for $69 several tears ago. The 7.62x54R round will go through 1/2" of steel plate like it was wet toilet paper.
depending on quality... u can go from... a dark bore and a terrible action for 60 bucks... a medium quality bore cost like 70-80....a great unnissued goes for 100-300. and then theres like super collecters rifles. and they get crazy with prices but dont believe em.
A dark bore doesnt necessarily mean the rifle will shoot bad, my 91/30 has a pretty dark bore, but the lans and grooves are very well intact, and the rifle is very accurate.
@3buffalo13 trust me its worth the $80 you wont regret it. plus they usually come with neeto accesories. cleaning kit. oil can a dozen striper clips. a cheapo bayonet. amo pouch and sling. amo isnt as cheap as it once was but still reasonable.
Its all about the burn rate, soviet ball rounds burn way too slow, thus it craps unburnt powder out the muzzle. (hence 5ft long barrel on other models)
A faster burning powder or stick powder would solve the problem, so handloading is the way to go.
I bought one of these for the heck of it one time. Friggin thing is a blast. and you don't want to be anywhere near the muzzle of it. It is like a friggin concussion grenade every shot you take.
@btistabomb126 $200+ now if you can get one. They were $80 or so for the longest time until people figured out they are a handy, cheap to shoot, and powerful little carbine for the money.
@deussolinvictus Jesus where the hell do you live lol i just bought one from the gun show in NC that was unissued for $99.00 from a dealer if i can find the receipt i will post the number.
@btistabomb126 they still run for about $100 with the original sling, bayonet, a leather ammo pouch, basic cleaning tools, a cool looking container for cleaning solvent, and a multipurpose tool to disassemble the gun.
actually no, i own both a 91/30 and an M44, the barrel is shorter on the m44, and it is slightly, not dramatically, but slightly lighter. you do get more recoil from the m44, and much more muzzle flash than the m91/30.
@cheeverracing89 The M44 and M38 have more felt recoil than the 91/30. All things being equal, a rifle with a shorter barrel will always have more felt recoil than a similar rifle with a longer barrel.
Extend your bayonet, that's how the rifle was designed to be shot and will be more accurate that way. Also practice cycling the action with the weapon still on your shoulder. All of my friends can barely work the action on my 91/30 holding it at their chest with both hands without smacking it... I have no trouble keeping the weapon on my shoulder and cycling all 5 with one hand. It's a skill that takes time to learn I guess.
@zacdrury What's a bayonet have to do with being accurate? Having the bayonet on the end of the barrel changes the barrel harmonics (how the barrel vibrates when you shoot the gun), which affects how the bullet exits the barrel. M44's were all sighted at their original factories with the bayonet extended, and that is how they were designed to be shot for best accuracy. Soviet infantry doctrine stated that the bayonet was to be fixed at all times during battle, so that's how they were sighted.
@zacdrury It is absolutely 110% true. If you don't believe me, look it up and do some research on it yourself. It's the same principle that many competition shooting rifles use with the harmonic dampeners that screw on to the end of the barrel, or the Browning BOSS system. Those bayonets are also pretty damn strong, and very very hard to break so that's not a concern. Also ALL M44's had side folding bayonets, period. Other models removable bayonets which may have been lost, but not the M44.
Wrong... M44 has to have bayonet extended to be accurate at longer ranges, it has to do with the test firing in the factories, during the manufacturing process they kept the bayonet extended through all test firing and it caused an impression to the barrel that the bayonet will balance when extended.
i shot one five years ago on a warm day, small breaze, well clean after a surplus purchase. i shot 2 ringers with no adjustment...well i splet the hole in the second shot. range says 200 yards but i would say like 175 180. after that i was impressed. my 7mm never shot that well. ever, rem 700 junk
Liberals seem to forget that any rifle round above .22LR will do a doozy to armor. So ban AKs? Might as well ban all rifles, and that is not happening. We are a free people that have the right to firearms.
Its a real shame, but we must be strong and stick to the principles the founding fathers had. Keep stocked and vigilant, history will be made, and we must protect the ones who need it the most, to bad NY, CA, NJ,IL will be sacked first, due to their laws.
That's the problem most states are not banning them per say thet are just putting a whole lotta restraint to try to deter people from even thinking of getting one.
Actually we still have many rights if you have the balls to stand up to them. Many times when cops have tried to F with me it has always ended the same. Me telling them I will make them my bitch in court... If you know your laws and know how to get a cop to respond they will always stumble all over themselves. They have always backed off. Of course if you do not have the balls to tell a cop that he doesn't scare me even if he puts his glock on my forehead and shoot then good luck!
@FromyColdeadHands all they do is ban the importing of russian automatics. like the AK it also includes the Dragunov. thing is you can still purchase Romanian and polish versions and even the Russian conversion rifles as well.
@FromyColdeadHands Mr. Brady (to which we can thank for making the Brady Campaign) was hit with a .22lr. I think their goal is to make it unattractive to try and own firearms in general.
Long waiting periods, ammo type and amount restrictions, microstamping, internal gun locks, biometric 'smart' guns...etc.
@FromyColdeadHands I shot an oil barrel with my ruger 10\22 (22Lr) and the bullet went completely through the oil barrel. Both sides! 22lr actually causes more death in U.S.A then any other caliber. And 22lr can easily be suppressed. Most professional paid assassins use a suppressed 22lr pistol to kill. When it comes to armor. Not sure? It can go through thin metel like an oil barrel....but if your shooting a car with it not much damage. But then agian you will 535 more rds in your pocket. CHEAP
The Egyptian steel core goes through a half inch steel plate at 80 yards easily. When I get a better place to shoot I'll try for 150 yards and see what it does.
dont take the rifle off your shoulder when you cycle, if your going for speed, you must be practicing for combat, In combat you dont take your sights of the targets.
lol. about the only way you can do it is to bring it down. Its much too awkward to keep it shouldered. I'm a WWI russian reenactor and bringing it down is how the imperial army used to do it.
I love my M95, and the kick isn't much worse than an M44. The extractor needs to be replaced though, I have to use my boot to get the damn bolt open after firing.
I am not surprised by its performance! I own an M44 in mint condition. I have fired it only a few times at the range (because I want to keep it in mint condition!), i always knew it was a mean gun!
Nice weapon and lots of fun to shoot. Anyway, I just watched an interview with UN spokesperson Rebecca (something) from the UK..they are lobying HARD to disarm US one new law at a time. The goal is complete disarmament. The UN braggs that out of the 80 million gun owners, ONLY 4 million support the NRA and their right to own guns. THEY feel the time is nearing to make a bold move to disarm US. Join people..protect and fight for your rights
No. M38 came out first, in 1938. Mounted troops wanted a carbine that was lighter and more maneuverable than the long M1891/30 rifle
It was very popular with all troops, not just mounted, but there was still a need for a bayonet. In '43-44 the M44 was introduced with the side folding bayo on it...there is a famous a photo of a M44 from the Fall of Berlin, a soldier hoisting the Red Flag has one.
Shoot one of the short carbines at dusk, they have an incredibly huge fireball and a LOUD report.
Never heard of a Mosin bolt "blowing up" and I own a bunch. The receiver is this monumental F'ing hunk of milled steel, which the bolt is designed to fit into sloppily so as to absorb KBs. Bolt is vent.
Every bit as strong as Mauser 98, just weird and different.
One of mine started life in 1896 at Tula as M91, made it thru WW1, the Revolution, Civil War, and then was recycled by Finland into a superb M39 and used against Russia.
Receiver has shrapnel scars. Very sloppy bolt, very accurate.
No, that was a Finnish sniper, Simo Häyhä, and his Mosin Nagant did not blow up, instead, he was shot in the lower half of his head. He died in 2002, a hero of the Finnish War against the USSR.
Good form and accuracy. Better than mine for sure. I didnt know much about Mosin Nagants until I started playing Call of Duty (Lame I Know). But I was able to buy a fully matched and almost mint condition m44 stamped in Stalingrad for $99.99. Best purchase I think I ever made. Great fun to shoot that thing and it gives me a great respect for the men who wielded that fantastic weapon.
P.S.
I agree, Shawman...Please, you've probably never even been to Russia, Berlin, or Europe.
Its pretty clear then that you havent shot a Mosin...or probably any bolt action rifle for that matter. The Mosin weighs about 20lbs, holding that in firing positing for 5 shots is extremely fatiguing. Plus to have your body out of cover that long is suicide. You lose.
HA, a Browning Automatic Rifle from WW2 with Bi-pod and a loaded clip is like 19lbs, an M60 would be a dream to own, but not so much to aim for pretty shots, just to hear that chuhk chuhk chuhk chuhk sound in short bursts would be awesome.
i ve fired steel casing surplus ammo through it and found no trouble ejecting the casing. what i have heard is that if you do not clean the cosmoline well enough out of the chamber the laqour coating from the surplus steel casing aka machinegun ammo will liquify and blend with the cosmoline creating a glue like substance which create the sticky bolt. nice vid ill post mine up as i make them
just bought an m44 not too long ago, dated 1948 so its a post war. doesnt have a laminate stock it still has the hardwood other than a couple of dings on the stock its overall in very good condition. it was imported by CENTNURY INTERNATIONAL ARMS so the import mark is very well done. i hate looking at photos of WWII era rifles with hand etched serials on the bolt and laser etched caliber markings on the reciever.
Even if this round did not pierce the body armor, wouldn't it still be like barry bondes taking a metal bat to your chest as hard as he can? You'd probably suffer from internal bleeding and die pretty quickly.
shawnman13, please shut the fuck up. I highly doubt you served in the Soviet Red Army during what the Russians would call the Great Patriotic War. You have the intellectual ability and grammar of a 13 year old. You saying that you fought in Berlin and watched your "comrades" die is just making a mockery of the men who served their countries with honor and watched their friends die during the war, Axis and Allies alike. Plese quit trying to sound cool, because you really aren't.
Noting at all. They'll probably cost as much as the gun. You're better off saving your money and just buy a giant tin or surplus ammo and shoot all day.
Get some good cleaning supplies as the old ammo is corrosive and you will have a lot of cosmoline on your rifle when you get it. Hoppes #9, patches, bore brushes, etc. if you don't already have them. Don't bother with a scope, it will just be more money than it's worth. I've heard all the mass-produced aftermarket stocks are cheap and plastic-y. Be sure to keep your bayonet, as these guns were originally sited to be used with bayonet fixed. You can buy a tool to adjust your site for like <$15.
Yes, keep going on about dragonskin...But how much would it help you if you got shot in the head?
And to tell you the truth, getting hit with a 7.62x54R even with body armor, would probably kill you as stopping a bullet of that power would rupture every organ in your torso. So, fuck your dragonskin.
Ha ha ha. Best reply to the dragonskin fetishist I've seen yet. Man, I wish it would warm up, I really need to take my M44 up to the quarry for a spin. Hell, I might just head up there in the snow, Mosins were *built* for cold weather !
Whoever the fucker was that said the Americans took Berlin first is a dumbass. I had to fight all the way into Berlin and watch my comerades die to keep your asses safe from Hitler! Do not talk bad about the Motherland!
Wow, are you really arguing over the internet about the quality of the Mosin? For the record I would chose a rifle along the lines of a Mosin if I ever had to choose one to survive with. It provides high power in a carbine. I own a pre-production 44 and that rifle is gorgeous. It has all of the right qualities. Power, easy to maintain and use, and durability. Most all of these saw actual COMBAT, More than can be said for most guns and they still work superbly. Those are "the facts".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think any bolt action military rifle from that era are great weapons. they are all reliable and have great power. But I think the Mosin was the least reliable. there were so many of them lying around though they could be maintained
the mosin was very cheap and easy to produce but the bolt could easily become gummed up and be extremely hard to open. thats what my 1928 91/30 has but i cant fix it. my vote would go towards the model 98 for reliability
the bolt sleeve(not sure if its called that, the part with the handle). when you try to open it with a shell in the chamber it is impossible. its not cosmoline because it does that when its not bein fired either. well thats what you get for 80 bucks.
Thats odd, well I don't have a clue what would be wrong with it then.
Body body btw.
My sporterized mosin 91/30 I took elk hunting this year when I cleaned it I took the bolt down and boiled the pieces and there was built up dirt inside it and it worked just fine, even after a week of wind cold and dirt.
That's not the bolt, son. Thats the shell puffing up in the chamber after firing, making it almost imposible to extract without using both hands with the rifle on the ground.
Don't use Czech silvertips! Try to go with Brass casings!
@zach0542 But I would say most of the bolt problems are from the rifle being preserved in cosmoline. My bolt sucked till I polished the chamber a little and cleaned the hell out of everything. It's pretty smooth now,but I would say in general actioning a mosin bolt takes more force than other designs. Probably because of the straight bolt handle gives you less leverage also.
There is nothing funner than shooting a good old fashioned military surplus rifle! I had some mild steel core surplus shells that found their way into the the hill side. @btistabomb126 they still run for about $100 with the original sling, bayonet, a leather ammo pouch, basic cleaning tools, a cool looking container for cleaning solvent, and a multipurpose tool to disassemble the gun.

m44s have about the same recoil as a 91/30?
icankickflip 1 year ago
@icankickflip yea it does
collegefurtrader 1 year ago
well it has the same cus it fires the same round but you feel more of it cus its lighter than the 91/30
joematt51 1 year ago
@icankickflip the 91/30 is a little easier on the shoulder for some reason, but not by much
urna55 1 year ago
@urna55 That flat steel buttplate is a pain man, I have a massive surplus of ammo because I can only shoot so much every time I hit the range
mallard92 1 year ago
@mallard92 pick up a PAST recoil pad to wear over your shoulder, makes my 30/06 feel like a .223
lexmark136 1 year ago
@icankickflip
actually no, i own both a 91/30 and an M44, the barrel is shorter on the m44, and it is slightly, not dramatically, but slightly lighter. you do get more recoil from the m44, and much more muzzle flash than the m91/30.
to answer your question, no.
agumon12 1 year ago
@icankickflip the M44 actually has alittle less recoil
cheeverracing89 5 months ago
@cheeverracing89 The M44 and M38 have more felt recoil than the 91/30. All things being equal, a rifle with a shorter barrel will always have more felt recoil than a similar rifle with a longer barrel.
drewdane40 5 months ago
@icankickflip the m44 has more recoil and its louder but still manable

@icankickflip Actually, a little more, since it's a little lighter(I've owned both).

i found that its pretty fuckin accurate regardless of the bayonet, however the ammo makes a big difference.
collegefurtrader 2 years ago
Extend your bayonet, that's how the rifle was designed to be shot and will be more accurate that way. Also practice cycling the action with the weapon still on your shoulder. All of my friends can barely work the action on my 91/30 holding it at their chest with both hands without smacking it... I have no trouble keeping the weapon on my shoulder and cycling all 5 with one hand. It's a skill that takes time to learn I guess.
SeriesOfTubes101 2 years ago
whats a bayonet have to do with being accurate, hell it thats the case ill shoot my sks with it out
zacdrury 1 year ago
@zacdrury What's a bayonet have to do with being accurate? Having the bayonet on the end of the barrel changes the barrel harmonics (how the barrel vibrates when you shoot the gun), which affects how the bullet exits the barrel. M44's were all sighted at their original factories with the bayonet extended, and that is how they were designed to be shot for best accuracy. Soviet infantry doctrine stated that the bayonet was to be fixed at all times during battle, so that's how they were sighted.
SeriesOfTubes101 1 year ago 6
i dont think thats true, what that fucker breaks off then the gun will be less accurate then right?and do you know that some dont come with bayonets
zacdrury 1 year ago
@zacdrury It is absolutely 110% true. If you don't believe me, look it up and do some research on it yourself. It's the same principle that many competition shooting rifles use with the harmonic dampeners that screw on to the end of the barrel, or the Browning BOSS system. Those bayonets are also pretty damn strong, and very very hard to break so that's not a concern. Also ALL M44's had side folding bayonets, period. Other models removable bayonets which may have been lost, but not the M44.
SeriesOfTubes101 1 year ago
Wrong... M44 has to have bayonet extended to be accurate at longer ranges, it has to do with the test firing in the factories, during the manufacturing process they kept the bayonet extended through all test firing and it caused an impression to the barrel that the bayonet will balance when extended.

Reynard13Fuchs 6 months ago
@FromyColdeadHands I shot an oil barrel with my ruger 10\22 (22Lr) and the bullet went completely through the oil barrel. Both sides! 22lr actually causes more death in U.S.A then any other caliber. And 22lr can easily be suppressed. Most professional paid assassins use a suppressed 22lr pistol to kill. When it comes to armor. Not sure? It can go through thin metel like an oil barrel....but if your shooting a car with it not much damage. But then agian you will 535 more rds in your pocket. CHEAP

Does the M38 have a folding side-bayonet like the M44 ?
serekithegreat 2 years ago
Shoot one of the short carbines at dusk, they have an incredibly huge fireball and a LOUD report.

wasnt that the guy who didnt use scopes and eventually his bolt blew up and took off his jaw?
BOBERT426 2 years ago
Never heard of a Mosin bolt "blowing up" and I own a bunch. The receiver is this monumental F'ing hunk of milled steel, which the bolt is designed to fit into sloppily so as to absorb KBs. Bolt is vent.
Every bit as strong as Mauser 98, just weird and different.
One of mine started life in 1896 at Tula as M91, made it thru WW1, the Revolution, Civil War, and then was recycled by Finland into a superb M39 and used against Russia.
Receiver has shrapnel scars. Very sloppy bolt, very accurate.
desprdo418 2 years ago
No, that was a Finnish sniper, Simo Häyhä, and his Mosin Nagant did not blow up, instead, he was shot in the lower half of his head. He died in 2002, a hero of the Finnish War against the USSR.

AngryDuck9 3 years ago
He does not hve good form. This rifle was designed so that there would be minimum movement from cocking to aiming to firing.
In a battlefield setting that would be time wasted the way he is doing it.
ThunderAppeal 3 years ago
Its pretty clear then that you havent shot a Mosin...or probably any bolt action rifle for that matter. The Mosin weighs about 20lbs, holding that in firing positing for 5 shots is extremely fatiguing. Plus to have your body out of cover that long is suicide. You lose.

i ve fired steel casing surplus ammo through it and found no trouble ejecting the casing. what i have heard is that if you do not clean the cosmoline well enough out of the chamber the laqour coating from the surplus steel casing aka machinegun ammo will liquify and blend with the cosmoline creating a glue like substance which create the sticky bolt. nice vid ill post mine up as i make them
7point6two 3 years ago
just bought an m44 not too long ago, dated 1948 so its a post war. doesnt have a laminate stock it still has the hardwood other than a couple of dings on the stock its overall in very good condition. it was imported by CENTNURY INTERNATIONAL ARMS so the import mark is very well done. i hate looking at photos of WWII era rifles with hand etched serials on the bolt and laser etched caliber markings on the reciever.
7point6two 3 years ago
Even if this round did not pierce the body armor, wouldn't it still be like barry bondes taking a metal bat to your chest as hard as he can? You'd probably suffer from internal bleeding and die pretty quickly.

shawnman13, please shut the fuck up. I highly doubt you served in the Soviet Red Army during what the Russians would call the Great Patriotic War. You have the intellectual ability and grammar of a 13 year old. Plese quit trying to sound cool, because you really aren't.

leegwalker 3 years ago
Ammo. Generally they already have a bayonet, oil can, ammo pouch, and sling.
Shatnerpossum 3 years ago
Noting at all. They'll probably cost as much as the gun. You're better off saving your money and just buy a giant tin or surplus ammo and shoot all day.
VillaRat1988 3 years ago
Get some good cleaning supplies as the old ammo is corrosive and you will have a lot of cosmoline on your rifle when you get it. Hoppes #9, patches, bore brushes, etc. if you don't already have them. Don't bother with a scope, it will just be more money than it's worth. I've heard all the mass-produced aftermarket stocks are cheap and plastic-y. Be sure to keep your bayonet, as these guns were originally sited to be used with bayonet fixed. You can buy a tool to adjust your site for like <$15.

Those are "the facts".
crimsonfiredragon 3 years ago 5
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I think any bolt action military rifle from that era are great weapons. they are all reliable and have great power. But I think the Mosin was the least reliable. there were so many of them lying around though they could be maintained
DANIAC262 3 years ago
The Mosin is probably the MOST reliable ww2 era Bolt Action.
beandips 3 years ago 7
the mosin was very cheap and easy to produce but the bolt could easily become gummed up and be extremely hard to open. thats what my 1928 91/30 has but i cant fix it. my vote would go towards the model 98 for reliability
zach0542 3 years ago 2
I have never had any trouble with any of my mosins bolts.
What was the issue with yours?
beandips 3 years ago
the bolt sleeve(not sure if its called that, the part with the handle). when you try to open it with a shell in the chamber it is impossible. its not cosmoline because it does that when its not bein fired either. well thats what you get for 80 bucks.
zach0542 3 years ago
Thats odd, well I don't have a clue what would be wrong with it then.
Body body btw.
My sporterized mosin 91/30 I took elk hunting this year when I cleaned it I took the bolt down and boiled the pieces and there was built up dirt inside it and it worked just fine, even after a week of wind cold and dirt.
beandips 3 years ago
That's not the bolt, son. Thats the shell puffing up in the chamber after firing, making it almost imposible to extract without using both hands with the rifle on the ground.
Don't use Czech silvertips! Try to go with Brass casings!
TBFVideoFeed 3 years ago
It does that even if im just putting one in the chamber and taking it out, not firing. and i am using prvi partisan which is brass
zach0542 3 years ago
@zach0542 But I would say most of the bolt problems are from the rifle being preserved in cosmoline. My bolt sucked till I polished the chamber a little and cleaned the hell out of everything. It's pretty smooth now,but I would say in general actioning a mosin bolt takes more force than other designs. Probably because of the straight bolt handle gives you less leverage also.
