  • i use pillowshading as the base for my dithering and shading. so, if pillowshading is used correctly, it can be a good technique. but yes, its easy to overdo it

    Ahh, yes, pillow shading. My sister and friend misled me into pillow shading when I began pixel art.. I'm glad I grew a brain and stopped doing that before I joined Sheezyart and Deviantart. >U>;

  • I hate pillow-shading. it's not a technique, and it's not good. it defeats the whole concept of shading. shading is created by a light source, because another part is lighter. pillow-shading has no light source. and it's PO-KE-MON. not pokeyman. you're probably just saying that because that's the way it sounds in when someone(by which I mean someone with an american accent) says it, which obviously means you can't read, which makes me wonder how you can write.

  • Pillow shading to seasoned pixel artist is frowned upon. It seem to work only in some cases like Harvest moon.

  • Or perhaps you mean the way of the future? I keep trying to match the sprite style of Golden Axe... Perhaps you can tell what sort of shading they used on the sprites on the Sega Gen version.. Cause appears to have a dark outline and get brighter the closer you get to the center (especially the legs) which would mean pillow shading and it looks great. But yes I will admit that Pokemon has seen better days.

  • ..the way of the future my ass. Go to pixeljoint and look at some real sprites. You'll never be taken seriously if you pillow shade, it looks terrible and takes no skill. Golden-axe is borderline pillowshading.

Art reminiscent of the great works of Frank Frazetta. Well I love how their chracters and backgrounds look. I will check out that site as you've requested.

    ..not at all. They use more colors than say, Chrono Trigger, and they manage much less.

  • In the world of 32bit color depth and DVD based gaming, the number of colors is meaningless. There is no need to conserve. We have both the processing power and the speed to make glory. I rather like their unique art style of Golden Axe. Plus the prospective/look are completely different so it's hard to compare. Chrono Trigger was SNES which had a larger pallet (plus I just checked & the character sprites consist of 13 colors) while Golden Axe character sprites only had 10 colors.

  • sorry to disapoint you, but thats nowhere as near as pillow shading(and you can feel great for that). what you describe is simply a proper shading with a light source on the top/front of the character, showing some highlights in the top parts of the body of the chracater, while lower areas such as the legs doesnt get as much light thus not recieving a highlight. the pillow shadow as described here(and anywhere) is gradient filling every shape of an object on its own, discarding any lightsource.

  • Nonono... Pillow shading is a very bad habit. Pillow shading makes it look like light is generating from inside each and every body part. You are only supposed to have one light source, and that one light source is usually in the top-left corner.

  • Actually, the light source is coming from the middle.

  • If it was coming from the middle, then why would the ears, arms, AND tail of Plusle be outlined by a dark shade like that? Since every limb is pillowshaded like that, it means there is a different light source hitting each one of them, which doesn't make sense.

    And the reason for that shading is because of the light is first, then the darkened light

  • That's what I mean. If there was one light source, not EVERY limb would be shaded like that. If the light was coming straight towards the middle, there wouldn't be so much dark shading on the body. I'm aware of how this is shaded. This is one sprite, the body parts should all have related shading, but instead, they are separately shaded as if they were different areas.
