  • I think that an apt comparison would be the 250 or so measures that he wrote of a G major basset horn concerto (K. 584b) - an excellent but not fully satisfying piece that he later returned to and re-wrote for Clarinet - yes, the wonderful K622. So there really is no incomplete basset horn concerto; in a sense K584b is a lie. In the same way this quintet wasn't meant to be completed.

It's regrettable is that he didn't get around to returning to this and re-working it. It would be a masterpiece

  • Amazing. Would love to know what the finished product would have been like.

  • This is very good! Mozart sure loved the clarinet and basset horn. This adds to my collection of Wolfgang's works.

  • Who completed this fragment and who are the players on this recording?

  • @SuperOrganmaster ... Andrew Marriner: clarinet (son of Sir Neville Marriner), Angela Malsbury: bassett horn; Kenneth Sillito: violin, Robert Smissen: viola, Stephen Orton: cello. The fragment ends at the double bar, and it required the completion of a third of its bars, which were completed by Erik Smith. The recording is from the Complete Mozart Edition on Philips.

  • thank you for posting this, it's a truly terrific piece. Shame Mozart never finished it
