You forget to mention that per kW solar is $9.80 to produce and maintain. Wind is $5.50 where as coal is $22.00 per MW. If you pay $100 per month for electricity you will end up paying $1000 a month if we shuttered all our coal plants tomorrow, not to mention the rolling brownouts that will accompany a total dependence on solar/wind, for baseload nuclear is the way to go but people are so mis-informed about the dangers that building new powerplants takes many years to build and certify.
ExSSBN2005 has not done his homework and speaks without authority on this subject. Coal is on the way out, dude. Get a Grip. The U.S. has just begun to realize how valuable renewable energy is as an industry. More investments are being made each year in renewable tech. And in reference to saying "goodbye to the American Way of life we all know and love", that's just fallacy. We don't depend upon ANY foreign fuel for electricity generation.
Don't buy the coal crap renewable resources its the way to go lets harvest our solar and wind power which is huge. coal will burn, pollute and eventually disappear the sun will always be there to provide energy.
@balancedenergy - BZZZ Wrong Answer! U.S. Dept. of Energy stated that if we harness wind energy alone from just 3 States in this country - it could power the Nation! Wind is forever in motion & the Sun shall continue to rise & set each day! Not to mention geothermal power, & wave power which is currently being built in the Carribean South of Florida.
"We may have to sat goodbye to the American Way of life we all know and love."
Oh yeah! We all love the fat lazy Way. We love seeing thousands of people die every year from lack of affordable medical insurance. We love to see mountains ripped down and rivers buried. We love seeing people throw away thousands of dollars on horribly inefficient heating and cooling. We all know that the American Way of life is non-negotiable even if it kills millions of people.
get a grip dudes and dudettes

"the capture and storage of CO2" what a joke....
wouldn't it be better to not produce co2 at all?

Coal provides 50% of our electricity. So far, neither wind nor solar can provide baseload power like coal.
