Keith Olbermann actually did another tribute to Bill Hicks on his show, Countdown, this past Friday night because it would've been Hicks' 50th birthday. (For those who don't know, Countdown just moved from MSNBC to Current TV, it didn't go off the air -- at least not for longer than exactly 6 months minus 1 day, anyway.)
Bill Hicks would have NEVER "started his own church".. Bill was not a religious man at all... and if this was a sarcastic metaphor, well... not a good one. Bill not only was a great comedian who dealt with the eye opening truths, also he was and still is a great friend to visit everytime you want to truly feel life.
Of course Hick's specialty of pointing out hypocrisy and inconsistency never really meant looking at any of his own.
Still Hicks was a great comedian -- his fans just get carried away with it these days. Olbermann on the other hand, just your average liberal tool trying to use a Hicks segment for a little cred with the cynical crowd I guess. After all, only Subaru driving, turtle-neck wearing types would care what Keith has to say these days.
@dealmeidaable He and his kind of angry, incisive comic will always be needed.
We will be the poorer for not having comics like Hicks, Carlin and Pryor.. the kind of guys that can look at something that is fundamentally wrong that everyone just accepts and say, in a pleasingly aghast voice that you cannot help but pay attention to:
Olbermann would be a great guy if he would just give up the whole "left/right" paradigm bullshit. Bill Hicks was able to see through it. He knew both Bush AND Clinton were murderers. Search for "Bill Hicks on the Elite". The man was ahead of his time. Too bad he wasn't around today.
@mule1969 You make a good point -- which is to say, Olbermann was much better running down the day's scores and highlights rather than choosing to play the political game.
@ccrosbie33 I disagree. He's FAR better in his later, more Hicks-ian role of pointing out hypocrisy and bullshit and being a shining "Edward R. Murrow"-esque role-model for what journalism is SUPPOSED to be, AND even using comedy to do it when necessary, than he was just announcing sports scores and making fun of them.I mean, he's even said that he would like to go back to that, but things are just so fucked up in this country now that what he's doing now he feels it's his duty as a journalist.
@ccrosbie33 You know, the same reason that got him to start doing his special comments.
And I don't get it, why do you people always think that Olbermann is "playing the political game?" I mean, seriously, as far as TV newscasters go, there hasn't been ONE SINGLE PERSON to ever credibly criticize President Obama *MORE* THAN HE HAS! I mean, seriously, Olbermann is EXACTLY as political as Bill Hicks himself was! They aren't PARTISAN -- they're anti-bullshit! So where do you get that idea from???
@macgeek2004 I think you give Olbermann way too much credit. You're a big fan of his (maybe because he has the same political leanings as you) but he is no Edward R. Murrow. He's also not on the level of Hicks for pointing out "hypocrisy and bullshit." In fact, Keith is a more of a consistent dispenser of both more than a shinning example of what journalism should be.
You might be one of those who guards Keith's wiki page all day, but he's hardly an impartial beacon of truth.
Olbermann is one of the few guys on network TV I have any respect for. I don't always agree with Olbermann but I like him. Bill Hicks though is a phenomena, I almost always agree with him even though I don't smoke and I'm a vegetarian.
Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
Everybody needs to hear Bill. Upon hearing his words, it is somewhat confusing, 'cause he's saying what you are feeling, even if you didn't know you felt that way...
There is a lot of love and understanding in his words. A deeply intelligent and
compassionate man whom we have lost physically, but not spiritually..
I think it's funny that so many people care whether or not bill hicks would've hated olbermann. Go join a cult. Only if bill hicks endorses though of course. Maybe I should write a book about the things bill hicks would've done were he alive today. I bet he wouldn't have gotten gay married.
Bill loved irony, he made a living pointing it out every where he could... when things were just coming together for him he was told he was dying soon... and even after death people in the very mass media he so despised were saying what a great comedian Bill was. The same media that refused to give him a fair shake without trying to water him down. Fuck CBS/NBC/FOX you slime, scum... suckers of satan's cock.
Kieth Obama Man isn`t aloud to like Bill Hicks yah Sure use one of Bill's lease controversial quotes , as long as it's slamming christains it's fine . How about how both parties are control by the same peope . Once again Kieth Obama Man shows his true colours as another talking head in the establishment media
@CoolerKing37 I think your wrong. He would have had problems with Keith essentially here and there, but Olbermann's got class.
George Carlin and Bill Hicks were very alike with their critique of consumerism and pop culture and Carlin was even more bitter then Hicks in his old age. YET! Carlin stated during a Keith Olbermann interview that Olbermann had the most honest, original, and productive show on news. That Olbermann was the host of the best show on news. Bill wouldn't hate him.
@ProRanting agree, but there is no way Carlin was more bitter than Bill. I can't think of many people at all that were more bitter than Bill over humanity's failure, or anything really. Kurt Cobain? Orwell?
@JackWigal I don't agree with that. Over Carlin, yeah probably. Hicks in my observation of the two was even more disappointed in people, and more capable of understanding it and using it in his act. Just my opinion, but I think Bill was both smarter and more outraged than Doug.
@ThisIsUngood Well, we'll never really know. But I think Stanhope is no more outraged than he was when he did the "Voice of America" segments on Charlie Brooker's "Newswipe". Not many people have seen them because Newswipe is a British show. In them Stanhope calls Oprah "the P.T. Barnum of our generation" and he calls Jack Cafferty a "defeated, low-rent Howard Beal".
"I'm Doug Stanhope and that's why I drink." "Abortion is green and sodomy is environmentally friendly."
@CoolerKing37 I agree. Olbermann was just another hack with an agenda. He used bill as a way to get ratings. Olbermann may have started out in an honest manner and in a way hicks may have enjoyed watching him, but as time went on Olbermann's ego enlarged and he become just another blowhard pushing the agenda of the president down everyone's throat.
It's funny, the idea that the Mosaic god made a mistake by leaving pot here is almost as ludicrous as believing he ever existed in the first place. If you're going to create an argument against someone's absurd stance, make sure it's not rooted in the same absurdity.
After all, "“You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see the world anew.” - Albert Einstein
@j7m7f7 Touche my friend although I believe he was trying to convey his message to a specific demographic IE the Christians or people of faith and my post was actually a quote from his show. @JG129 Alexandre Dumas pere wrote over 400 historical novels exposing world tyranny(Roman Catholic Empire). He was born near Paris in 1802 and 'coincidentally' in 1902 the Society of Jesus(Jesuits) were expelled from France for the 3rd and last time. The Society of Jesus(Jesuits) have been expelled from 83 countries, city states and cities and their pope is ARAMIS AND HE IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE COUNT OF MONTE CHRISTO(GENERAL OF THE JESUITS).
@banzaimotorcross lol hypocrisy is; to act as though it mattered which party you donate money to, when both parties are controlled by offshore banks and corperations.
Don't bash Olberman just yet, that is what was done to Bill Hicks back yonder. Those who try to open our eyes are not to be disdain. The enemy is the one who wants to silence discourse.
So "hypocrisy and inconsistency", Keith. How about that? How about having a guy who rails against "conspiracy theorists" who “actually fear their own government”, who's only willing to speak truth to power to the extent that a Democrat isn't heading it, sing Bill Hicks' praises? If that happened, that'd be some "hypocrisy and inconsistency" right there.
What a cocksucker.
(Obligatory "also, fuck Republicans" disclaimer lest I'm mistaken for a Republican: Also, fuck Republicans. RIP Bill.)
@purplenurps Hed prolly hate you before that happens ;) and it hapens to be that Keith has a very similar *cynical* way of saying things. Theyd prolly be buddies.
@PatTheRiot Yeah but Keith would of been one of the guys who hicks was ranting about, 'puppets', hicks hated both sides and hypocrisy, which Keith is; Keith is making seem like he just hates republicans. Well Keith works for a corporation and basically is a corporation bitch and i'm not that, so is most likely that that hicks would get along with me.
@7omm3h wow...he was in love with us all and all he wanted to do was make us understand that our perception of reality...is just a ride. No money....only a choice between fear and love. WE OWE THAT MAN THE LOVE OF ONE ANOTHER AT THE VERY LEAST!! He used to say that all his heroes were dead. I don't know if there is something better after this place, but I know that it's been better since 1994 when I lost my hero....rip

@7omm3h "The minority, the ruling class at present, has the schools and press, usually the Church as well, under its thumb. This enables it to organize and sway the emotions of the masses, and make its tool of them."

@7omm3h " I am not happy about the rebirth of the Jesuits. Swarms of them will present themselves with more disguises ever taken by even a chief of the Bohemians - as printers, writers, school teachers, etc. If ever an association of people deserved eternal damnation, on this earth and in hell, it is this Society of Loyola (1816).
I love Bill Hicks, but I think Olbermann should've mentioned Bill's disdain for corporate America rather than two Jesus jokes. It makes Bill look anti-God or something when that's really not the case.
"It's just a ride."
That would've been a much better lament for the legendary artist/visionary.
@techepix trust me on one thing my friend - if ANYONE in this world resides in heaven it is bill hicks - a man with a personal mission to seek truth in the world and uproot evil and hypocrisy wherever it could be found, including the church.
the recent revelations from the catholic church prove how much we need people like hicks.
Bill hicks had his third eye WIDE open, as for all the people leaving negative comments, your eyes are WIDE shut. your just sheeple bending over for the media and corporate Elite.
@cobraman96 He even made a joke that said one of his biggest fears was to tell non-smokers they were whiney little pussies and come back years later with a voice box. He spoke often about how addicted he was but that it was also sadistic to go up to a crippled person and start dancing. "Fucking sadist" he would call you.
@cobraman96 yeah he sure did die of pancreatic cancer caused from chain smoking, but if this is all you know of the man...then you sir are fail. I bet your one of those people that only eat freedom fries huh?
Okay, that was a bit harsh, but I disagree that nobody deserves eternal suffering. What about Adolf Hitler or Josef Stalin? They sure do.
Olbermann just gets my goat. I don't like his pompousness. His shtick is tiresome and worn out. He's so full of himself. I dislike nearly every newscaster, but this guy, Chris Matthews, and Bill O'Reilly piss me off the most.
add to that custer as well thank you (for my native ancestors)
i agree with you on olbermann - he tried to do peter finch's howard beale bit honoring the film network and i thought, just give it up. don't even go there..
we don't have NEWS in america - we have corporate sponsored BULLSHIT alright?!? on every damn network!
@philochs No. Hitler and Stalin do not deserve ETERNAL suffering. To accept that they do is to accept a purely malicious concept (which requires the absolute absence of love).
To wish eternal suffering on anyone is nothing but evil and I'm sure Bill would've agreed with me.
Hitler deserves eternal suffering, if you don't agree, then we are all lucky that you aren't God, because you would suck at it.
He was a satanic catholic that brutally snuffed out the lives of 14 million, then married and retired with an obvious fake suicide, what do you think he deserves, heaven? Funny, the demons in hell will get to torture him forever.
Anyone that doesn't think Hitler deserves hell, you deserve hell too.
Supporting Hitler requires a total absence of love, you scum bag!
@philochs I would recommend taking some time to ponder what eternal suffering is and what LOVE is.
If I deserve eternal suffering for practicing unconditional understanding for a fellow human being (no matter how vile he was), whoever sends me there is not a God of love.
Ha, he's God dumbass! You can call him "your God" but guess what, he's your God just as much as he is mine. You have to stand before him too. Judgment befalls all of us human beings.
Malice? Yep God condones that, tough shit. Nobody told you life was easy, did they? If some ass-hole has more hate in his heart than love, FUCK HIM. He shouldn't have been such a prick. If God wants to stack Nazis up in hell, well praise his Holy name! Praise the Most High. Alpha and Omega. God's wrath rules!
Troll? You drew first blood, not me! Unaware of what love is? I'm in love with my soul-mate. She's as beautiful as a model, of course, but also she has the perfect personality. All I do is talk about love, day and night. Unless I'm talking to an ass-hole, like you. You waste my time, that makes you the troll.
Hitler sucks! Your argument is pro-genocidal. Nobody should defend Hitler! Genocidal love? The cops should probably check out your living quarters. Would they solve any murder cases?
Stop being a whinny bitch your whole life, why not call forth Satan, and make war against him? I guess if you saw Satan, you'd say something like "Hey geesh Satan, you got a bum deal, you don't deserve eternal suffering!" then you'd sell your soul. Satan's going to love tearing your ass cheeks apart to make room for his chainsaw pecker to fit snugly. You love Hitler now, but you'll change your tune, poked in the ass with a pitchfork burning alive. When you get horsewhipped, it's too late.
@philochs And you're a Hicks fan? How embarrassing... Practice some rational thinking, dude. Take some mushrooms and experience an ego-death. Sorry I believe in having compassion for EVERYONE.
Common sense is rational thinking. Let the punishment fit the crime. You're embarrassing, why don't you spend the night at the home of the next Jeffrey Dahmer? Then as he eats your flesh and rapes your lifeless corpse, you can practice your compassion. Bill Hicks called for mankind to be destroyed, and wiped off the face of the earth. He said people were a virus with shoes. Here's lookin' at you, kid.
I'm not egotistical, the fact is, that you are trying to impose your ego on me, poser.
The moment you claim to want compassion for everyone, you prove to be a giant douche bag, actually you proved that about yourself long ago, but I'm trying to make a point. Okay, so you stated what you believe? What's it mean? Just your two-cents, nothing else.
Compassion for everyone? You're a liar. If a serial killer murders your loved ones, then what is compassion for him? Let him continue his murder spree? Maybe you'd want him to die, ya fuckin' loser. You're a fevered ego, and a virgin.
Bill Hicks laughed about abortions, so he really couldn't have given a fuck about compassion. I'm compassionate, much more than Bill Hicks ever was. He wanted his ex-girlfriend to die in pain, he wanted humanity to be nuked off the face of the earth, washed away like turds being flushed. Not the most compassionate man. He had his moments of compassion, but overwhelming, nope!
You're brainwashed by the United Nations, or some shit. Enjoy the New World Order, Enjoy Obama, your new God.
@philochs God.. you jackass. HE WAS FUCKING JOKING. He really hated people, but it was because he was frustrated with them. If he didn't care, his material would've been completely different.
If you really believe anyone deserves eternal suffering, you either don't have the slightest clue what it's like or you're fucking evil. Do some drugs and have a bad trip that lasts all day. Experience hell for yourself before you start condemning people.
I don't know if Phil Ochs would have loved Bill Hicks, and I wouldn't speculate on that. Anyway, I love Phil Ochs and Bill Hicks. Bill is my favorite comedian. I really don't see your point, other than that you're a dolt. Good luck with that, fuck face.
Tic Tac, you're just an idiot, an imbecile. Docile and perturbed by things way above your pay grade. God pours out his wrath on the workers of iniquity.
It's not good, you already sound like a fallen angel. They bitched about their judgments too. Oh Enoch, ask God if we can go back to heaven now, we are tired of banging these sluts, and our offspring are 40 foot tall cannibals, so we can't afford child support either! Enoch asked God, but God told them tough shit bitches. Good luck you tool!
Keith Olbermann is a damned fool. What a yuppie fuck. What a glib tool. He's a douche bag fuck face. Bill would have started a church? WTF? This shithead doesn't know anything about Bill Hicks!
He's just trying to get ratings. What an ass-hole!
I wish George Carlin hadn't kissed his ass. I'm sure wherever Georgey is, he regrets it now.
"No he knew politics was a scam and hated both sides of the political 'debate'"
Yes, that's true: he explicitly compared Dem/GOP parties with 2 puppets, both of them controlled by the same puppeteer.
BUT, stampece is correct that Bill was the opposite of apolitical. He was deeply political both personally and in his act.
& let there be no doubt that Bill was a man of the LEFT. The FAR left. He distrusted gov't, not for the reasons right-wingers do, but for serving industrial exploitation.
I'm middle-aged, watched Hicks when he started. I was always impressed. He was on the political left, never hid it. Bill was no Leno, "skewering" both sides equally. His comments on Reagan's Latin America policies show how left he was (see Noam Chomsky/radical/critical school). Notice he portrayed Republicans as malevolent, and Dems more as on the right side but ineffectual or not radical enough. He would likely view contemporary liberals and Dems similarly. He was definately not apolitical.
@jugec92@jugec92 He believed both sides were full of shit, but he originally believed the Clinton was a step in the right direction. Eventually with the bombs over Baghdad he decided Clinton was just as evil as the rest. He was left wing, but he was fully left wing, an Anarchist like his hero Noam Chomsky. I don't know if this was a comment about left and right wing or Dem/Rep But he was fully left wing.
@jugec92 That is a deeply cynical view, and one that gives false equivalency to the argument that Democrats are just as bad as Republicans to which I say, "not fucking likely!"
Wow. You really are brainwashed. You don't have a problem with the government threatening to kill you if you don't give them as much money as they want?
Not the same. Bill had a lot of great views, but we totally disagreed on some things like that, & I told him his cynicism about government felt like he could just disengage. I met him back in 1988 when he was touring the comedy circuit in Los Angeles, a friend & fellow comedian introduced me to him. We were both big thinkers about philosophical issues in life, that's why we hit it off.
@Stentor7 That's really amazing. You're a lucky fellow. I find it difficult to avoid cynicism with the context of our history and the state of things. I'm not against government or participating in anyway though. This representative system is easily corrupted which blurs choice and gives a somewhat subpar freedom. Thank you for the reply!
Olbermann is one big ugily ( both on the inside and out) peice of defecation anyone that could set through more than five minites listening to this guy definitely has some serious issues.
Oh got to love a corporate suit working for MSNBC. Trying to pay tribute to a genius would have HATED him. I don't get how, the young hipster fucks love this guy. He's probably just as obnoxious as Bill O'Reilly. Only that Bill tries to make you fear him. This jackoff goes for name calling. Eh same person anyway.
"...corporate suit working for MSNBC. Trying to pay tribute to a genius would have HATED him."
Your point is valid. But some of Bill's fans are quick to accept a misleading image of the great man's life and career. It's true that he mercilessly criticized the hypocrites of mainstream culture & politics, but he also was someone who wanted to be famous & successful. He'd have been happy to be endorsed or featured by someone like Olbermann, even while he'd have made fun of him in his stage act,
I don't think he'd let Olbermann endorse him if he didn't respect who Olbermann was. I think you have the desire for fame and success confused with a desire for money and status.Bill had an underlying message, and went through hell to get it out there.
Success for Bill would mean he would no longer need to perform.
"Bill had an underlying message, and went through hell to get it out there."
Well, it's clear we're both huge fans & knowledgeable of Bill's career & ideals, so it's silly to get bogged down in minor quibbles. Let me just clarify that of course I agree that Bill was not mainly motivated by money. & even less so by status. He was no ass-kisser.
But what I'm trying to say is that we should be careful not to make a martyr out of the guy, or a saint.Because that's not what he would have wanted.
What i mean by that is that that kind of veneration goes against the very message that he conveyed & expounded as an artist, which has & has continued to inspire us.
Lastly, while you're probably right that Bill would have hated Olbermann, that doesn't mean that he would've hated Olb. as much as would have hated--say--Glenn Beck. He was frank about how he hated Clinton, but he also was clear that he hated Bush Senior even more. Just imagine what his reaction to Bush Junior would have been!
Who the fuck was Bill Hicks?

Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.

Everybody needs to hear Bill. Upon hearing his words, it is somewhat confusing, 'cause he's saying what you are feeling, even if you didn't know you felt that way...
There is a lot of love and understanding in his words. A deeply intelligent and
compassionate man whom we have lost physically, but not spiritually..

The same media that refused to give him a fair shake without trying to water him down. Fuck CBS/NBC/FOX you slime, scum... suckers of satan's cock.

CoolerKing37 10 months ago 2
@CoolerKing37 I think your wrong. He would have had problems with Keith essentially here and there, but Olbermann's got class.
George Carlin and Bill Hicks were very alike with their critique of consumerism and pop culture and Carlin was even more bitter then Hicks in his old age. YET! Carlin stated during a Keith Olbermann interview that Olbermann had the most honest, original, and productive show on news. That Olbermann was the host of the best show on news. Bill wouldn't hate him.
ProRanting 9 months ago 4
@ProRanting agree, but there is no way Carlin was more bitter than Bill. I can't think of many people at all that were more bitter than Bill over humanity's failure, or anything really. Kurt Cobain? Orwell?
ThisIsUngood 6 months ago
@ThisIsUngood Doug Stanhope has it all over both Carlin and Hicks.
JackWigal 6 months ago
@JackWigal I don't agree with that. Over Carlin, yeah probably. Hicks in my observation of the two was even more disappointed in people, and more capable of understanding it and using it in his act. Just my opinion, but I think Bill was both smarter and more outraged than Doug.
ThisIsUngood 6 months ago 2
@ThisIsUngood Well, we'll never really know. But I think Stanhope is no more outraged than he was when he did the "Voice of America" segments on Charlie Brooker's "Newswipe". Not many people have seen them because Newswipe is a British show. In them Stanhope calls Oprah "the P.T. Barnum of our generation" and he calls Jack Cafferty a "defeated, low-rent Howard Beal".
"I'm Doug Stanhope and that's why I drink." "Abortion is green and sodomy is environmentally friendly."
Classic.

@philochs No. Hitler and Stalin do not deserve ETERNAL suffering. To accept that they do is to accept a purely malicious concept (which requires the absolute absence of love).
To wish eternal suffering on anyone is nothing but evil and I'm sure Bill would've agreed with me.
tickitytak 1 year ago
Hitler deserves eternal suffering, if you don't agree, then we are all lucky that you aren't God, because you would suck at it.
He was a satanic catholic that brutally snuffed out the lives of 14 million, then married and retired with an obvious fake suicide, what do you think he deserves, heaven? Funny, the demons in hell will get to torture him forever.
Anyone that doesn't think Hitler deserves hell, you deserve hell too.
Supporting Hitler requires a total absence of love, you scum bag!
philochs 1 year ago
@philochs I would recommend taking some time to ponder what eternal suffering is and what LOVE is.
If I deserve eternal suffering for practicing unconditional understanding for a fellow human being (no matter how vile he was), whoever sends me there is not a God of love.
tickitytak 1 year ago
God is a God of love, and he respects long suffering for his sake, earning your own. You have to work to know God, just like anything else in life.
These are the days of the lost and found. Some are lost, some are found, but even the found are lost. Lost and found days. We're apocalyptic children.
If I were you, I'd learn more about the kind of sacrifices God accepts, offer that, his works completed through you.
What kind of gratitude and love allows for diabolical evilness? Take a hike!
philochs 1 year ago
@philochs So your God of love condones malice? You should re-evaluate your logic.
tickitytak 1 year ago
Ha, he's God dumbass! You can call him "your God" but guess what, he's your God just as much as he is mine. You have to stand before him too. Judgment befalls all of us human beings.

Hitler sucks! Your argument is pro-genocidal. Nobody should defend Hitler! Genocidal love? The cops should probably check out your living quarters. Would they solve any murder cases?
philochs 1 year ago

Sorry I believe in having compassion for EVERYONE.
tickitytak 1 year ago
Common sense is rational thinking. Let the punishment fit the crime. You're embarrassing, why don't you spend the night at the home of the next Jeffrey Dahmer? Then as he eats your flesh and rapes your lifeless corpse, you can practice your compassion. Bill Hicks called for mankind to be destroyed, and wiped off the face of the earth. He said people were a virus with shoes. Here's lookin' at you, kid.
I'm not egotistical, the fact is, that you are trying to impose your ego on me, poser.
philochs 1 year ago
The moment you claim to want compassion for everyone, you prove to be a giant douche bag, actually you proved that about yourself long ago, but I'm trying to make a point. Okay, so you stated what you believe? What's it mean? Just your two-cents, nothing else.
Compassion for everyone? You're a liar. If a serial killer murders your loved ones, then what is compassion for him? Let him continue his murder spree? Maybe you'd want him to die, ya fuckin' loser. You're a fevered ego, and a virgin.
philochs 1 year ago

He distrusted gov't, not for the reasons right-wingers do, but for serving industrial exploitation.
idealtypical 2 years ago
I'm middle-aged, watched Hicks when he started. I was always impressed. He was on the political left, never hid it. Bill was no Leno, "skewering" both sides equally. His comments on Reagan's Latin America policies show how left he was (see Noam Chomsky/radical/critical school). Notice he portrayed Republicans as malevolent, and Dems more as on the right side but ineffectual or not radical enough. He would likely view contemporary liberals and Dems similarly. He was definately not apolitical.
