  • The Peter Howell version was my favourite :)

  • The Prophet has either Midi nor DCB,so how did he sequenced it with the MSQ-700 ?? S

  • wow the 80s clothes!

  • i remember watching this first time on telly

  • The bit that comes in at 2.16 is there a longer version of that fugue?

  • Mega cool. And I love those LED signal bars. Never seen a set like that. And a crap ton of VU meters (on the tape machine even? damn that thing had to be pricey.)

How fun would it be to have all those tracks at your command to mix as you please...mixing is of course a very important art .

  • I remember seeing this on Childrens BBC all those years ago. Sophie Aldred was the coolest person on TV.

  • sorry, but nothing can beat the original version done by delia with TAPE. it wasn't created with synthesizers, because it was before the bbc radiophonic workshop had any and it was in the early 60's - long before any prophet synthesizer was built and even before the first moog in 64.

  • @nikebordom

I loved that original mix done with nothing but tape edits.

  • is that going to be in doctor who dvd

  • Prophet5 ftw , i so love that synth , got myself a vst of it

  • fantastic!!!!

  • it was all change for Dr who when this came out no radiophonic workshop

  • Keff was fantastic, and Sophie is gorgeous in this clip.

  • WOW i am stunned

how spoiled are we today with all emulated instruments on vsti's ?

  • hate this version, peter howell with cs80 and arp is sooooo much better, this is cold

  • @mailbishie

Agreed, I too prefer the Yamaha CS80 / ARP Odyssey combo for the Dr. Who theme myself.

  • Damn that bass is FAT :D

  • One of the best series' theme ever <3

  • Wow thanks soo much for sharing this gem! I loved this beautiful version. It could be used today, as it sounds sooo timeless. Absolutely fantastic!

  • This theme is awesome!

  • I love the 87 tune!

  • I've always really liked Keff's version (wish to god they'd use it on the new series instead of that awful orchestral version), can't believe it was done on a Prophet 5! That was old gear by 1987-88, I always thought it sounded like it was done on a PPG Wave Term or something similar. Great clip.

  • Like the verson of the theme the best prob because I was growing up during the Baker/Mcoy era.

Liked Sophie Aldridge was a belivable companion shame they pulled the series just as Mcoy and her were finding there form think it would have got better and would had some of the best Dr Who seriels if they had kept it the same production team together for another couple of seasons.

New Who music is ugly and brash and the stories are like soap opera and rip offs of HBO dramas

  • Heaven.

  • Sophie is so cute

  • Lots of now vintage equipments there...

  • Ah, the Prophet 5. Nothing says "80's music" like it.

The DW theme might be the most dissected piece of television music in history.

  • Personally, I think that the Original Will always be the best. But then Dominic Glynn's theme was 2nd Best. It had a Great Base Line & it was still Errie, then This (Keff's) Version - The Bass may have been cheap but the main Lead sound was EXTremely Haunting! Last is Peter's. The Dr Who theme is not meant to sound 'Funky'. And it's been overused.

The Film version used the wrong notes to avoid crediting Ron Grainer & Murray Gold's is just a God Awful Disection of Delia's Masterpiece. Cowardly.

  • Mccullocks theme rules even though delia said she hated it, she was just jealous cause it blows her delaware theme out of the water. It was great what she did with analogue tape but when it came to synths she just got left behind.

Not sure if this is better than the original 60's theme but it is still a damn fine mix, nice and clean sounds wicked on the program.

  • Oh crap! I have a Roland MSQ-700 sequencer. Very nice box. Wish I had that Prophet 5 though.

  • I really used to enjoy watching 'Corners' but there ain't much material around. A pity the opening titles aren't around.

  • Howell was better than this one (more fast), but Delia D's version was the most eerie!

  • I'm simply in love with Keff's synth-bass here!

  • yup, old version was way superior, why they commisioned a new one is beyond me, you might as well re-do the match of the day music

  • Sorry but the first version is SO much better.

  • hah....

I love this bass and lead...

    Prophet 4ever!

  • the CS 80 version of peter howell is so much better, feels so much warmer then the prophet 5. Hate the bass and lead in this version, just an opinion...

  • The most fantastic Sci Fi theme tune ever written.

  • this is class.

  • delia derbyshire hated this version of theme

  • Delia hated every version of the theme that followed the Hartnell original, which she felt was sacred and couldn't be improved on. She said she thought it was disrespectful that new producers kept changing it.

  • bull, she wanted to change it herself that's why she did the delaware remix and it was crap so she started getting bitter after that and harking back to her 60's mix.

  • seventh Dr. theme song and titles are way better than the ones they have now.

  • way back in 1981 the concerts in china that Jarre did had a Prophet 5

  • An absoluter classic sci fi theme. God this is magic.

  • @sanshuz My favourite of the variations. Keff's version is thrilling and haunting

  • I want to be locked into that studio forever.

  • im sorry, but using a sequencer fot this theme is so lame of keff. shame

  • where does he use a sequencer... and how else would you play it back if not from a tape....

  • Uhh, Keff McCulloch didn't compose the Doctor Who theme. Ron Grainer did.

  • This is interesting, considering he's using the Prophet 5, whereas Peter Howell was laregely using the Yamaha CS-80, both synths released in 1978 - but the "5" outsold the CS-80, 'cause the Yamaha was too expensive, weighed a ton, and went badly out of tune the minute anyone so much as sneezed. Thank God for Arturia and VST's.

  • i agree mate but Arturia's Cs 80 sounds way far than the original machine..

the detune thing was the magic...lol

    cheers

  • Oh, don't get me wrong; I'm a FAN of the CS-80. One of my heroes is Vangelis - and we all know how he loved to abuse that instrument!!

  • I love Sophie!

  • This video is a priceless work of history for any dr who fans or composers that have simply heard the theme!

Unfortunatly, this version of the theme never got much credit & was not loved as much as the previous themes. Which is Why they still use the orignal Synth affect in the NEW series!

  • like all his predecessors, he redid/remixed it. And this piece he did compose. Every dr. who msic guy adds something of his own to the theme that wasn't there before. Like with Keff's it's the first time you hear the whole whosong at the beginning as well as the end. This theme and title sequence hasn't i repeat hasn't been topped yet. the new title sequence actually looks older than the 1987 one.

  • Agreed. It's amazing how many Who fans (I mean real ones) love the old series & can't stand the new one! The new series takes no imagination to watch, which is what children love to do.. Imagine! If I win the Euro Millions this week I'll Dish out on 1 more season of Doctor Who. Starting from where it stopped: Survival 1989! How good would Sylvester be NOW! Oh the thought almost makes me wet myself with joy! AND NO JNT! So we can rid of the Question marks at last! He was a camp dick! Wish me luck

  • Doctor who should have died in 1989, an honourable stop, and if not, they should have carried it on with the seventh doctor and ace!

I like Fenrics theme too! Could you upload a video of your version?

  • Nope, ron grainer composed it, delia did the radiophnic arrangement.

  • all fantastic equipment

  • I love sophie aldred she was my favourite dr who companion, Keff McCullloch is not boring or miserable at all, this is the only clip where i have seen him sound a bit tired, but none the less this was my fave dr who theme and the 7th dr was my favourite!

    Cheers for the upload!"

  • You're all entitled to your opinions. However, please don't insult him unless you've communicated with him via email or a message board, like a newsgroup. I don't believe that he's either boring or miserable.

  • I'm sure he's a nice guy, he just seems so monotoned here.

  • monotoned perhaps surrounded by cool old synths and reel to reel tape yes ! hes the winner in the end + i bet he gets some off that chick

  • Monotone?

    It's the Prophet 5!

    The first polyphonic analog synthesizer!

    hah

  • @hageir The first polyphonic Synthesizer with patch memory storage. Polyphonic Synthesizers exists since 1938, starting with the Hammond Novachord.

  • @TheMCMXXL2 the first good polyphonic synth haha :DI am a bit biased I love pro5s

  • @EDKATZ Keff's an awesome dude. He's good at what he does and he created a beautiful theme!

  • @EDKATZ I have communicated with him via email. He is both boring and miserable.

  • @EDKATZ (I am half-joking. Only half.)

  • to you, maybe, but imo it's interesting to see how things work and how people achieve what they want to achieve.

an opinion is only an opinion if there is something to back it up with.

  • Sorry I don't think the Prophet 5 lead sounds as good as the ARP lead. You can fire away at me, belive me the Prophet 5 is a great synthesizer. but I like the other youtube video on the making of the Dr. Who theme, I think its sounds better.

  • Delia Derbyshire's version using a plucked string, valve oscillators,test-tone generators and white noise generators and loads of tape and philips tape machines is the best;howell's/glynn's/culloch's versions are POOR AT BEST AND AMATEURISH!

  • 2:30 = Quality Meter

  • lol..

  • Prophet 5

    Fantastic Synth!!!

  • Sorry - nice try, but Delia Derbyshire did it better. Nice to hear the rebuild, but this is an apprentices copy, not the masterpiece.

  • Excellent vid. Thanks for sharing. Cant believe it was a single prophet 5 that made all of that

  • I remember this one when i was young i'm a massive doctor who fan always have been

  • My god!!! This music is for the 1989 season, and a Prophet 5 is being used. WONDERFUL.

  • well its the theme for 1987-1989, Keff did alot of incidental music as well but he left in mid season 25 and Mark Ayres took over, his scores where more sinister

  • Especialy Fenrics Theme which I had to extend recently for a client who wanted a piano arrangement of it in the middle. But I still kept all the oldskool creepy sounds for the start of the track! The flute, Harp, pulsing synth etc! He was pleased with result. But I'll never beat Mark's Original in my opinion.

As for the who theme, I've done 2 remixes for 2 different clients, BOTH were farthers giving it to their sons! lol 1 wanted a Dance remix, & 1 Wanted a Break beat Trance version. Typical!

  • I always wanted to see what the Radiophonic Workshop was like when I was little!

  • this is where it all went wrong for dr who both musically and in terms of program content. all the warmth and originality of the first theme sucked away

  • Wooo Prophet 5! Sequential Circuits! Based out of San Jose, California!!!

  • heh heh nice oldskool box sequencer!! Didn't they have software sequencers back then in the late 80s?? I thought they did.

  • Yeah, I'm sure the Radiophonic Workshop had a couple of Apple Macs running sequencing software but for some reason Keff decided to use a hardware sequencer. Perhaps he found it easier.

  • I still use hardware sequencers today, (one was free!) P.C.s suck the life and skill out of composing, I suppose you could say the same about sequencers generally though- easy on the quantising!

  • this comment was for an earlier comment mentioning the lack of cubase!

  • Corners! I used to love that as a kid

  • thats one thing, no modern instruments have is the classic feel and sounds of the vintage late 70's early 80's gear

  • Oh thats 'ace', she was the doctors assistant. People who like the prophet 5 would love to see this, you need to tag it or put it in the description.

  • This is a good video
