Yeah, this is just one of the reasons I thought Half-Life was garbage. That goddamn elevator shaft. Took me 20 minutes of dying to get through it.

You have to hit the ladder at precisely the right angle otherwise you don't catch the ladder, or you bounce off. And there are multiple ladder jumps to make in this same elevator shaft.

By the way, that jump actually is pretty freaking hard to do, even without carrying the shotgun (which in-game doesn't affect your jump height, obviously). I slipped off the ladder like ten times before I stuck the landing.

This is what the realistic thing happening would look like.
