Cooke's is still the definitive version however this recording by Solo is just as haunting. Some other great performances of this song by Otis, Seal, Anthony Hamilton and of course Luther. Great singers all but the song itself......... that's what the deal is. Best song Cooke ever wrote and his last hit.
Also, Solo has a Sam Cooke connection, he is Sam Cookes cousin. Which explains why for years noone came close to doing the song as well as Solo does. It is in the DNA! Still, it is a hard song to cover because people try so hard not to sound like Cooke, and the melody and pace doesn't allow the singer to venture too far from form. Unless you can change the arraingment a little, as with some of the vocal groups, it's hard to make any dramatic changes in this song. Malik Jubal
Malik Jubal-This Solo version was my favorite until I heard Seal's version. I think Seal's voice and oh my God, the superior, enigmatic orchestration of Seal's version makes it the best to date. Seal didn't sing it hard, as most people do when they cover this song. Seal flowed with the orchestration and the lyrics. Solo's version, the singer sings it almost like he's at a funeral, where as Seal's is more inspirational. Both do well. Malik Jubal
I purchased this CD three times. My father took one, I wore the second one out and my daughter borrowed the third one! I guess I will need to make purchase #4.

I love Solo.. I had the album and they never got the credit they deserved.. very talented R&B group.. but they had to compete with Boys II Men and the other established groups of that time.. I wish they would have gone further.. they had a great sound to them
@eljaydacomic Solo came along a generation too late. By the 90's singing talent was taking a back seat to visual entertainment. Skip on up to 2011 and the radio is filled with Lady GaGas while the Adeles hardly get spins.
I remember when these guys 1st came out in 94 i believe Soon as i heard heaven i went and bought the album. One of the best old skool sounds i have heard since old skool. These guys can sing and they really nailed this in their own style Great group that shouldv e gone further
Its so sad this group has to be one of the most underrated groups ever! Damn I wonder what happened to them? Such talent and they had great old school soul voices!
Damn now this is real music, some songs should never be touched I use to feel this way about this song and Sam Cooke until I heard this by Solo.. This has to be the greatest remake of this song hands down. These guys nailed it!!!
awesome version, indeed, very soulfull and very touching ;-) solo also did the song called '' holdin on'' AWESOME oooh man, you feel it. wish they did the whole songs of cupid and other motown short medlies they did
I was told bout this fairly obscure version as this is one of my all-time fav joints. Probably one of the very few versions that come anywhere near Sam Cooke's original.
i love this version.you can really feel the emotion from the soul.

@Mrprich I feel like he butchered that song, don't care for his version at all really. doesn't have the power in his voice to pull this off
