  • Lets all stop being so closed minded. Koko and Etta obviously are a lot older therefore haven't had the privilidges Beyoncé had, however Beyoncé still worked her african american ASS off for her career she one of the most influencial women in the world, she sings this song with just as much soul as Etta and Koko do, stop hating everyone and lets appreciate the fact we can still listen to their music

  • Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. Truly amazing, incredible and wonderful. We miss singers like this these days.... Man they could truly sing. Heart and soul.

  • love this version....

  • Superbe interprétation!

    (Please STOP with Beyonce)

  • this version always make me cry, Rest in Paradise Koko!

  • Thats the honey drop ina shot of whiskey. sweet but strong and really hits that spot in the soul. God bless and rest ya Miss Taylor.

  • Amazing...just WOW

  • Fabulous! One of the all time greats. Thanks for posting this GREAT version of a classic.

  • Had the honor to play three songs with her in the 90's

  • I'm 22 years old and never heard of Ms. Koko before, but I know great music when I hear it. I wish there are more songs and artists like her on the mainstream today. She deserves 5 consecutive #1's in one album than Katy Perry, Millions more sold than Gaga and Taylor Swift, and more international recognition than Rihanna and Beyonce.

  • There's at least 5 people out there that I hope do not live anywhere near me.

  • Koko can sing the blues!

I think I prefer the version by Bare Bones Boogie Band, though. Michael Grimm also does a great job with it.

  • aatarian2, don't kid yourself, there have been voice coaches for centuries and recording equipment before the turn of the 20th century...it might not be up to todays standards but we had it and they recorded on it, i know 'cause i have their recordings from the early teens and 20's....

  • 5 people missed the like button.

  • Wow!!!

  • thats a great song...its got the feeling that blues must have...god bless koko taylor..!

  • I just listened to Etta James version of this and I must say that KoKo has converted me even though Etta's rendition is also very good this one is a little meatier.

  • Damn !I have always loved the blues-since I was 13-and Koko IS the Queen of the blues ! R.I.P

  • awesome guitar playing! and of course this voice giving one goosebumps!

    love,

    Ana

  • I just made the mistake of listening to Beyonce's version. After four bars of her over-emoting catterwalling, I clicked off. Beyonce just sounds silly trying to sing with soul.

  • What an absolutely beautiful voice. Such feeling. One of my favorite things to hear.

  • anyone know who plays guitar on this? It's awesome

  • KOKO TAYLOR WAS THE BLUES, rip Beautiful! ;o)

  • OMG....as much as I love Etta's version...Miss Koko just adds that DEEPLY, RAW and VERY EMOTIONAL level that Etta's doesn't deliver. Miss Taylor (God rest her soul...) was THEE QUEEN of The Blues! You just don't hear this kind of raw, emotional singing anymore...

  • Koko's like a velvet hammer. She hits you, but it feels so good.

  • I must admit that I regret my comment about Beyonce earlier..one year ago. As I respect both Beoynce AND mr. Stewart. (To you that comment negatively about him: I think you`ve missed something good)

  • I just get goosebumps

  • for a long time a thought that there couldnt be a best version than Etta's till i listened to this. this one is also fantastic....

  • I personally love Koko and Etta's version, I could listen to both every day, I'm a big fan of both ladies.

  • EU AMO ESSA MUSICA ,APESAR QUE TDS DA KOKO EU AMO,ISSO ME FAZ VIAJAR EM UM LADO DENTRO DE MIM QUE SOMENTE EU CONSIGO ENTRAR !!!! E SOMENTE ELA CONSEGUE FAZER ISSO COMIGO, A CADA SOM,VOZ ,LETRA E UMA LAGRIMA QUE CORRE EM MEU CORAÇÃO ,E CADA LAGRIMA DE UMA CORDA DE SUA GUITARRA!!!

  • can someone tell me what kind of guitar is used in this song? pls...i must know which guitar makes that beautiful tone!!!

  • @UnceBobTouchedMe it sounds like a Fender Strat on the neck pickup to me but B.B. King gets this tone with a Gibson hollowbody so I think it depends on the player (I'm not an expert)

  • @swingingkris thanks anyway man :)i think that it is a Strat too

  • Koko was, is, and will always be the queen of the blues! I had a few opportunities to have her play a small club I owned west of Chicago. She was as great a person as she was a performer, and WOW! what how she could move someone. I will never forget the night she brought her family to come see 'a dear old friend' as she described Mighty Joe Young, when he played at the club. People dancing on the tables when he brought her onstage for Rock Me Baby! And rocked they did! Love you KOKO! rip

  • @MrRadiobryan Just LOVE those small clubs-the low lights, beer flowing, chicken frying in the small kitchen, smoke filled and the bumping and grinding to the music like Ms Taylor, everybody having fun in that little room. Now thats what it all about.

  • @genramsey Where can I find THAT place??

  • Koko's voice is stronger, but Etta has more feeling and its interpretation in 1967 is definitely the best.

  • ♥♥♥KOKO♥♥♥

  • Luverly track, koko has a great vioce, but i think chickin shack's the one for me, big peace people.

  • @dustykel100 This is suppose to be song with soul, chicken shack has about as much soul as Beyonce.

  • OMG woman thank you, and we LOVE you so much back. Forever

  • Comparing Etta to Koko is like comparing a Porsche to a Corvette. Most people would be happy with either. Who cares how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

  • Let's puth things in context. Beyonce does a good job. She's in a hollywood studio with all the technology, voice coaches, etc.. Etta and Koko spent their careers on the road playing small clubs all over the country back when Black people couldn't share hotels bathrooms diners or buses with white folk. Certainly didn't make much money from their recordings. Listen with your eyes closed and mind open and visualize where Koko and Etta were when they recorded., then tell me who's got soul

  • @aattarian2 oK NOW LETS GET THIS STRAIGHT!!! BEYONCE NEVER DOES HER SONGS WITH ANY VOCAL COACHES,NO TECHNOLOGY!!! SHE HAS RAW TALENT,AND RAW EMOTION WHICH COMES THORUGH IN HER VOCALS!! WHAT I CANT STAND IS WHEN OLD ASS FARTS LIKE YOURSELVES CANT GET OVER THE FACT THAT BEYONCE IS THE TOTAL PACKAGE AND SHE WAS THE RIGHT WOMAN TO PLAY ETTA JAMES!!! BEYONCES VERSION WAS JUST AS GREAT AS KOKO TAYLORS VERSION AND ETTA JAMES VERSION!! SINCE WHEN DI ROD STEWART BECAME A BETTER SINGER???

  • @Beyoncefan1000 Beyonce's a great vocalist and performer, but her voice IS doctored in some way and she's had vocal coaches. Neither Koko or Etta had that when their versions were recorded.

  • @bballano31 umm her voice is natural!!! and for you to say that shes great because of vocal coaches is an insult all by itself!! vocal coaches can only work with what they hear!! they dont have the magic touch! it has to already be there!! and Beyonces voice is dynamic as it is because she practices, practices, and perfect her God given gift just like the great blies singer Koko Taylor had to do!!

  • @Beyoncefan1000 I didn't slight her voice. And I never said that her voice was great because of vocal coaches. Beyonce went to a performing arts high school and had vocal coaches there. They helped train her voice. And I'm sure she still worked with people who specialize in voice training after she got famous because her voice was still changing. That's not a knock on Beyonce, just a testament to her will to get better. And her voice IS doctored in some way when you hear her studio recordings.

  • @bballano31 true but not in beyonces case!!!

  • @Beyoncefan1000 Nope. It's definitely true in Beyonce's case. As it is with every other recording artist. Famous or not.

  • @Beyoncefan1000 Amen. I'm an "old fart" and I appreciate Beyonce's version just as much as Koko's and Etta's versions. Let's drop the bullshit and just enjoy the great music these three Goddesses of Song blessed us with.

  • @aattarian2 Very well said ... plus, there is just something about that rich analog/hot tube amp sound that digital just cannot capture or simulate.

  • @aattarian2

i don't see why you would bash on beyonce...making it seem like she had a silver spoon to her mouth her entire career and that she hasn't had to work hard to get where she is today...that's just ignorant...just because they're from two different era's doesn't mean that one person has more talent, ability, or soul over the other...i'm not on any bandwagon, i just love music...what i don't like is when people make unfair comparisons of artists...

  • @blackkid49 Bey didn't work hard. Her parents did.

  • @aattarian2... you couldnt have said it better and i wasnt alive for those days.. i was born in 75... but i grew up listening to all this... you couldnt have said that better...

  • Rest In Peace, Ms. Koko. The blues world is not the same without. Heaven is pitching a wang dang doodle since you arrived.

  • This reminds me of sitting in the liquor house, drinking some brown liquor, crying over the woman who left me. You can feel the pain of the world in Koko's voice. Awesome song.

  • What a beautiful voice!!!

She sings the song way, way better then Etta

    Best version EVER!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow extreme soul feeling this vibe so damn much, heard Ruby first many years ago, fell in love with that, one of my all time faves, actually though it was Rubys found out Etta was the orginal artist, just listened to Beyonces version & Rods not bad but this tosses me btween Ruby and Koko, bless this bliss!!!!!!

  • This is by far the best version of the song. Not even close.

  • Great version...Koko sings this version so bluesy it touches my emotions..Best version I think ever...RIP Koko. Wish I had seen one of your concerts..

  • KOKO TAYLOR DIED IN 2009 R.I.P.

  • Timeless!

  • This is the best version of this song. EVER!

  • Superior! Sung with so much feelings.

  • Love it.

  • way better than anyone else.

    such a strong voice...

  • thanks for the info ...though theres a slightly different side of the story in w.pedia: "...Etta James wrote in her autobiography Rage To Survive that she heard the song outlined by her friend Ellington "Fugi" Jordan when she visited him in prison. She then wrote the rest of the song with Jordan, but for tax reasons gave her songwriting credit to her partner at the time, Billy Foster..." So if its true that she actually wrote the rest of the song with him ... well what do I know :-)

  • wow what a voice

  • Just to set the record straight - The original version of this song was recorded by Clarence Carter as one of his "tongue in cheek" songs as he's already blind! It was penned by Jordan and Foster (2 local prisoners) and picked up and produced by Rick Hall at Mussel Shoales. Etta James recorded her cover version at M.S. (Not in Chicago - as depicted in the film Cadillac Records) which was released as a B side to Tell Mama It is also a cover of Carters self penned Tell Daddy. Hope this helps

  • @ynot1f :Good job!Thanks for the information.

  • I can honestly say she sings this song better than Etta

  • @Daisy92308 :Do you know what I reckon! This is such a powerful song that it lends itself to anyone with a voice doing a good job. Go around the Youtube sites and there are some really good renditions.I love that under rated left handed giuitarist from texas , Barbara Lynn.Worth a listen.

  • we lost a gem when Koko passed to the other side....what pipes she had

  • I was in college, working at my first "cool" job at this small blues bar near my campus. I love all kinds of music, and although I listen to the blues I only knew the popular ones like BB King or Muddy Waters.

Koko Taylor was not a name I was familiar with at the time, but after hearing her perform live? It's a performance I'll never forget. She belted out raw emotion, and her recordings do no justice to her live performances. I met her after, and she was so nice.I feel lucky to have met her.

  • @Jazsngr - "I'd Rather Go Blind" is a Blues song written by Ellington Jordan and co-credited to Billy Foster. It was first recorded by Etta James in 1969,

  • Loved Koko Taylor to death. Anyone who can say that any of these modern artists today have more soul than Koko or Etta, obviously doesn't know music that well. If it weren't for legends like Koko or Etta paving the way, people like Beyonce wouldn't be where they are today. Back in the day, it was all natural, now it is about voice synthesizers..seriously??

  • What a voice!

  • i want to hear Etta and Koko duet in this song! Yes!

  • As I wrote on another vid, this is my amazing finding!!! I have listened to over 60 versions of Id rather.. on youtube and have yet to find a bad rendition. Not joking there are Icelandic, swiss , Australian, English, American and Canadian singers, reggae versions, male singers, a capella versions.. true, havent found one that hasnt had something to offer.Im certainly not easily pleased and can be a real critical bastard but if anyone finds a version that is truly bad let me know!!! A challenge

  • This version and Etta James' version are both fantastic!!

  • wow

  • The best version of this song. Oh Yeah.

  • @nauJRodriguez

    i agree! :)

  • " NONE BETTER "

  • I love Etta but Koko was the 1st for me with this song in our household. Outstanding. Some Mahalia in there too.

  • "wow"...is all i can say!!.....never heard her before but she show nuff sang this song!

    RIP....DAME KOKO TAYLOR

  • Koko you are the best for this song Etta I love you too but this is Kokos song.

  • I love Etta James, but hands down Koko takes this one.

  • This is simply the best, the real version, the true blue soul of Koko singing!!!!

  • So gratefull to have seen The Earthshaker live @ the Detroit Blues Festival @ Hart Plaza. She and John Mayall made the whole night complete. Nothing out there to compare with her today Not sure but I think it was 88 or 89

  • koko got the bacon in the pan that allows her to sing this with depth and strength! i don't like her timing as much though. she coulda made her voice stand out rather than the guitar. timing is so personal though- everyone has their own drum beating. lovely song and wonderful voice like summer and winter all in one!

  • The Greaatest!

  • Has anyone seen Hey Baby by Koko on youtube? I haven't been able to find it, different vibe, but it's good :)

  • ChocolateMink20 .... There ain't really no acoustics where your head is buried in your ass. Can't really tell the difference between real soul and studio technology; real and powerful emotion ... and 'assembly line' false techno sounds that are not nor belong to today's singers.

  • @Panbaccha oh bitch get a life you nerd and dont hate on the young gal you and i both know she sang her ass off so cut the crap clearly ettas old ass could never sing because once you have it you never lose it and the old bitch lost it look and find her vid where she sing to the president and his wife and you will see and dont blame it on her age because how may older people can still sing it like they did the day they wrote it.

  • @ChocolateMink20 - Etta James has no right to any song that she sings. She didn't write any of them. They are not HERS as she claims. I can't care what nobody says Beyonce brought the house down with this song in "Cadillac Record". I could feel Beyonce's spirit coming through the screen when she was singing this song at the end of the movie when Leonard Chess was walking away. I cry everytime I see that scene. Yet, I can't stop watching it.

  • There are hardly singers like this now. When you can sing the Blues from your soul, it's something totally different. Love the women from this era. Truly amazing singers.

  • I totally agree with. R&B and Rap artists just don't have the same soul and feeling that is going into this song. God rest her soul and she is singing to my dad who sadly was buried two days ago. God bless you all and who hear this beautiful and wonderful song sung by the Queen of the blues. Ms Koko Taylor or should I say Dame Koko Taylor.

  • At the Grammy's I was shocked to see that she had recently passed away. I couldn't believe it. What an amazing soulful singer. God bless. RIP

  • tthis is the best

  • I think this version could be better than Ettas... Wow... never thought I'd say that...?

    Thanks for posting!!

  • The definitive version of this song can be found on Dame Koko Taylors album live from chicago with the wonder Blues machine. If you get the chance to pick yourself up a copy please I beg you do so.

  • Wow.

  • I first seen KoKo and was dropped to the floor when I heard her voice. Its been the Blues ever since. RIP to THE QUEEN OF THE BLUES

  • I've never heard this song before Beyonce sung it..then I was curious to see how Etta sung it..Now Koko...I liked B's version but after listening how it was supposed to be sung..I'm in love with Etta's and Koko..its more emotional and bluesy

  • oh bullshit beyonce had way more soul then both koko and etta and sang it better too so stop playing she sang the hell outta that song and to all the prople who will post neg commets to this grow up honey.

  • @ChocolateMink20 Only somebody raised on chicken nuggets & McDonalds could possibly believe that Beyonce has more soul than Etta & Koko. After all those nuggets and fries I bet you don't even know what a fork and knife is for.

  • @luvureally you should feel real stupid because i dont eat chicken nuggets or McDonalds you dumb bitch you wouldnt know soul if it fucked you in the ass.

  • @ChocolateMink20 okay nuggets for brain anybody who even attempts to compare no-ouncey of talent to Etta James Or KoKo Taylor must have McDoodoo oozing from their ears.

  • Comment removed

  • @luvureally you sound like a 4 year old now so im going to be the adult and let it go and you honey u need to grow up.

  • @ChocolateMink20 And honey please know something about soul/r&b & blues before you post anymore ridiculous comments comparing no-ouncey to Koko Taylor & Etta James.

  • @ChocolateMink20 You must be really immature to compare Beyonce to Etta and Koko. That is like comparing hamburger to steak.

  • This is THE BLUES!!!

  • I even think Rod Stewart's version is much better than Beyonces'

  • @vikkidio SERIOUSLY?? QUIT LYING!! THATS JUST DUMB AS HELL!!

  • totally agree with you xxKaylaxxShereexx !!

  • How in the hell can people like beyonce's version? I mean, it was good, but no soul at all. Etta's is so smooth and Ms. Taylor..... i mean damn. No one else should be allowed to sing it but them.

  • You are damn right!!!! Amen

  • i think koko sing the song better then etta and so do beyonce

  • Some other peeps are posting on other versions how good E.J. and Beyonce do this tune. They're good, but KoKo is queen...period.

  • You took the words right outta my mouth!! Koko sings the hell outta this song!!!!

  • Etta James cant hold Koko Taylors wig people.

  • etta james can't hold koko taylor's wig.... now that is prophetic! i love it! and i agree.

  • lol :D

  • My alltime favorite.Wore out 3 tapes.

Thanks for posting This lady is "the

    queen of the blues"

  • Etta James the greatest Lady

  • Quite possibly the finest song I have ever heard and I have heard them all.

  • I like Etta James. Her "At Last" is wonderful, but this song totally belongs to Koko. There's room for more than 1 blues singer.
