  • LOL @ the dude at 7:00

    wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • you can still play DDR at home via the internet and autmatically get your scores saved to stepmaniaonline.eu :-)

  • Decent documentary i was thinking it'd be cool to do a doc on this. Could have been a lil better but it's still good with the time constraints you had and stuff...

  • I love playing DDR.

  • 14:25 ....Vash? o-o... LOL

  • I still love DDR to this day. I think a number of factors contributed to the decline of the series. Aside from some of the home console version release, the flimsy, weak ass dance pads that came with it didn't do the games justice. Also with both Guitar Hero and Rock Band having peripherals and more familiar licensed music, those games cater to the lazy ass mainstream America who I think find DDR unappealing cause it doesnt use a plastic guitar or doesnt have rock music x_x

  • DDR is pretty much over run by those asian teenyboppers who show off and think they're cool at the arcades..I mean I can understand that its fun..but they can be over the top sometimes..and ya im asian too..and where's Captain Falcon btw he would probably wreck the ddr machine if he tries it and then the arcade would implode within itself due to the sheer awesomeness of him

  • that ain't falco

  • 16 minutes lol wut uploaded in:1 day xD

  • ITG > DDR.

  • holy crap 1200 combos

  • very nice!

  • lol I got freaked out 30 seconds into the video when I didn't see any captain falcon references

  • FALCON... ddr?

  • I love ddr, (hence my name for this site, lol) but I'm no where near as good as I want to be! I can play on expert, but all the flips and tricks...yeah, not so much. Any tips? Anybody?

  • lol i thoguht it was captain falcon related lol

  • Lmfao me too. That's why I clicked on it :(

  • me too! lolol i got confused until this comment

  • Very informative!!

  • where's the Captain Falcon?

  • i love ddr, i wish so many nerds didn't play it...or geeks...like mike from santee...

  • lolololol

  • 5:35 funniest part! "Theres alot of different music from different genres" THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME! One genre japanese techno lol.

  • Falcon does it better! =<

I have a new found respect for cheerleaders who decides to step, if they do.

  • quite honestly, the game has become less popular in these last few years. konami is killing the ddr craze by making too many home versions with the eye toy version being the worst. i believe this slump began after extreme became popular. even as supernova came out, i wasn't too fond of it. i even retired after starting in 1999... i still use my gamertag as what it is to keep the memories alive, but i dont know how ddr can regain the hype it had in the past. i don't even go to arcades anymore

  • yeah, i haven't played ddr in many years. i still actively play IIDX at home though.

  • ITG2's fanbase is hardcore and keeping it alive. Fear not.

But yeah Konami refuses to admit ITG2 was right about a lot of things so their post-Extreme stuff is really awful

  • QFT

i agree with you whole-heartedly...but the thing is that itg only can do so much for the series...i mean...PIU is doing good in the arcade world right now, because they aren't making stupid moves like konami did with ddr

  • @ddrfan1022 If they can quit making the home systems and start making more arcade systems they should be able to make the hype increase. Also if they manage to find a way to make the arcade systems more accessable to more people the popularity should increase substancially.

  • @L0L0P13 wow at the comment necros. lol. I posted that years ago?

anyways, Now with DDR-X out, I'm officially giving up on the series. I was extremely disappointed, and I only play like twice a year now. Plus, arcades in my area are moding custom machines with stepmania skins, which allows a wide range of music whenever the host wants to update.

Meh, I wonder if I can still even do MAXX 300 on heavy anymore.

  • Needs moar Falcon

  • this was pretty nice, I enjoyed watching it

  • FALCON PUUUUUNCH!!

  • Falkon Kyeek!

  • i enjoyed that

  • YES

  • SHOW YA MOVZ!!!!! (Cap Falcown)

  • ZOMFG BUSTA GROOVE & PARAPPA THE RAPPER

he just brought me back about 5 years =D

  • YEAH!!!!!! PARRAPA!!!!!

  • well, i thought it was cool to see a DDR documentary i've been playing ddr for a few yrs now, watching people play makes me want to go play ddr right now =\ its kind of addicting

  • SHOW ME YA MOVES!

  • Nintendo should make an F-Zero DDR.

  • Yeah, how well you drive is based on how well you dance. Different courses are different songs... yeah, that would be a load of fun!

Now, how do you attack the other drivers? ;)

  • maby guitar hero, imagine the solos of blue falcon...GUITAR HERO 4EVA!!!!!!

  • This made me lol. And not WITH you. AT you.

  • ive read this comment on like 3 other videos, ... lol are u posting the same comment on eevry video lol

  • no.

  • To AlecRamsey, I've seen that video.

    That was a freestyle routine.

Freestyling used to be really big, but it seems to have died down.

It's really a great thing too see, and I wish some people would try to bring that back again.

  • Hahaha, okay this is pretty odd cuz maybe all nickel citys look alike but I swear dats the one ive always been to right next to pacific movie theatres, and its in carmel mtn. plaza right lol it is a small world like that guy said

  • Some of this was filmed at the Nickel City in North County (near the movie theater), wasn't it?

  • yep. one of the interviews was down at UZ too.

  • Small world, really. I've grown up in that Nickel City. The documentary is great, though. The credits are my favorite.

  • Oh yeah, I never really played at that nickel city much cuz I played down at Golden Token Amusement near SDSU; as I brifly stated in the video (I think?). That place was awesome, and I miss it a lot. They closed in august of 2005, and I havent really played any arcade games much since then. But during most of '04 and '05, I only really played the Initial D racing game anyway. DDR was just a casual game here and there. I havent played seriously since prolly early 2004.

  • golden token amusement closed down? damn.. wish I'd actually gone there. I heard they had the best pads in town.

  • Wow, great documentary for only 2 weeks!! Thanks!

  • Love the video, pretty accurate. I do wish you would have said a little bit about freestyling though.

WiiUnite, we always put a token on the corner of the screen so we know who's next, there is no hogging.

DJTALLGEESE, I can destroy your controller skills with my arrow key skills

  • Im using this video as a source in a college paper I'm writing about DDR. It has helped me understand the game from different people without actually going out and asking them.

    Thanks cfusionpm!

  • Nice video! I consider myself a longtime, serious player, and I pretty much agree with everything explained. You covered a lot of the major aspect about the DDR community. =)

Though I was expecting seeing easier stepcharts being played, too, so it wouldn't make the game appear to uninformed viewers as if it can only be played at those heavy mode intensities. Regardless, still a great document. Definately A+ worthy material (You should've gotten that plus, lol).

  • I self taught myself to play ddr...well I get step strategies from watching Kevin play mainly. Thanks Kev, you're the best at crossovers.

  • nice documentary... i am an avid DDR fan, i agree with most everything that is being said.

  • Listen, it's very important... well, moderately important... well, anyways... has somebody ever seen the DDR video with an asian (not sure) guy doing a sort of mc twist (flips his body in the air) and lands exactly on the right steps ? it's so nice i wish you could see it !!! lol well, if anyone knows...

  • You can dance all you want i can beat anyone by using the console controller.

  • PHIL IS ON THIS?!

  • I really liked, having taken some Film and Video classes myself I feel I can appreciate the work that goes into this a lot more than others. I really liked just about everything about this. Except for the guy on the street you interviewed, it looked like you were on the 2nd floor of something and he was looking up talking to you? The distance was just a little bit too much there, but other than that. Really nice work.

  • it was the only way we could get good lighting where we were. and yeah, the camera was up a few stairs.

  • Okay...the whole backpack and towel thing is crap...I've never seen someone bring a towel. Me personally, I just wear gym shorts and converse (chucks) or whatever i end up putting on that day. I get the whole special shoe thing but...the backpacks? The drinks? WTF? Shut up.

  • yeah, chucks r badass

  • And comfy!!

  • the whole backpack thing is real. You probably just go to an area where there aren't many good players. Socal players have towels, separate shoes, jj has monsters. Whats the most difficult song you can consistently pass?

  • uh yeah, towels and gatorade are pretty common among the really hardcore players that go on for hours.

  • DDR is like a drug once you start. If you like it then you crave it all the time. I've played since I was 9, started on standard but never really got good at it. I still enjoy it though, it's still a craving.

  • duh

  • You guys liked this video? It makes DDR players all sound like a bunch of spandex geekoids. Whats wrong with just playing the game at home with some friends and without the freaking backpack full of stuff. Do people seriously bring all that stuff to an arcade, thats borderline insane(not in a good way).

  • Yes, and you probably suck so you don't know the competition side of it. It's not insane, it's actually clinically healthy. There's nothing wrong with playing it casually; other people, like myself, feel it to be a lot more fun when playing seriously.

  • Saying I suck at the game without even knowing me is a idiotic comment, don't lower yourself to that level. Now I'm all for good hygene but if youre going to play at an arcade... play a few songs and be done with it. Don't set up shop, play for an hour hogging the machine, and try to tell everyone its normal. I love DDR as much as you do don't make that mistake, I'm just smart enough to know nobody wants to see someone after theyve played on expert for an hour.

  • Well, I'm making the assumption that you're not very good because you're basically denouncing the entire DDR arcade scene which is what keeps many arcades in business. Don't tell me not to "set up shop" or "hog the machine" (which I don't do; if you wait your turn, I have no objection to you playing). I, and many other players, stay for hours at an arcade and enjoy every minute of it. Why does it matter so much to you?

  • You know what... youre right. We don't need to understand the other side of DDR. Maybe I'll get to play you sometime.

  • Awesome video! It was really great to finally see someone spend there time making a good 16min video. Because many others are like5-8min. Impressive I liked it, and I can/t believe I saw sante..lol... :)

  • good video, althout it could have explained the game a little more. i did a little presentation for school about "how to play DDR" and your video inspired me in a way. so feel good about yourself. Jpoppyz approves.

  • What grade did you get on it?

  • an A. though, with some more time spent on editing (everything after about the 6 minute mark was edited together the morning before it was due, which was at 3pm), it would have been an A+.

  • Nice I really enjoyed it thanks

  • That guy in the red shirt is stupid, he didn't even reference beatmania the original music game series...

  • i am the guy in the red shirt, and i dont aknowledge it because both bust a groove and parappa were reletively popular american releases, while beatmania is virtually uneard of (also not released stateside till spring 2006). parappa was also released a year before the first beatmania.

  • Oh, sorry. Hm, I just looked it up, but uh looks like PaRappa came out in 1996 in Japan.

  • no worries. i would have loved to talk about beatmania, but it'd be hard because i'd have to take the time to explain that game too.

  • Explaining is easy. Notes fall down the screen, press the right key or scratch the turntable when the notes cross the line...Now rather that is easy or hard depends on a persons musical skill.

  • Great documentary! I would have totally watched it on cable. Only thing missing would have been maybe show one of those guys play through a whole song at the end.

  • Cool. 5 stars. Not that informative, but even if it wasnt about ddr it was a good vid.

  • Wow, good work! THis is the kind of thing I need to see more often!

However, I must agree with DaikenkaiKing (cool name ^_^), I think most people play DDR for themselves, either for sheer enjoyment or otherwise.

  • That only took 2 weeks?! Awesome dudes!

  • Nice documentary! Good job!

  • That was the best ddr video yet

  • OMG 4 credits. *druels. lol

  • Damn, it's about time a good documentary came out. I don't need to explain the game anymore!

  • hahaha! my town doesn't have a single DDR arcade machine! but me and a whooole lot of my friends have the at-home games.

So, needless to say, i don't do it to show off... It's FUN! And DDR parties with friends are awesome. hehe.

  • While I enjoyed your video, and I enjoy DDR ( I own a machine ), I have a problem with one thing

First, while not really "wrong", you made it seem as if the only reason people play is to impress other people, which is false. Sure, some people do, but I'd have to say most people play it for personal gain rather than making other people watch.

Other than that, good job. :)

  • 1. u OWNA a machine???? lucky ^_^

    2. u got a point about the performance thing

    3. i play because i now need to feed my addiction or go into withdrawals.

    ....really.

  • THE DDR SENSEI COMES TO TEACH YOU THE LIFE OF...

    DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION!!!

Lol ^_^ Really nice documentary. I liked it a lot. I hope there'll be more videos like this in the future, but much preferably without a sensei. Hehe, can't get over that azn girl's comment.

  • Very nice. I wanted to try and make something like this, but not this good.

  • I Found it Rather Boring... NAh just joking... you should put this on TV... HBO HERE DDR COMES :P

  • actually, had we had more time, i really wanted to edit it down to 12 minutes or less. it really drags on about 2/3 of the way in, but thats just a product of a short deadline =/ the original file was on my friends mac laptop, and he had to delete it to save space, so i cant even go back and re-edit anything =(

  • Wow ! GOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDD Documentary

  • i wish i had a ddr teacher that would be sweet

  • It's easier to do it at home cuz you don't have to pay for it everytime (atleast that's why I do it at home).

  • That was quite a good video. they didn't mention ITG anywhere though, considering the buyout :P

  • well, ITG really isnt as well known as DDR.

  • Very nice video, but I think it's really funny that right after he says the game judges on a scale of "perfect" to "miss", it shows someone playing on a non-stop mode with "marvelous". Good job on it though.

  • i think that's challenge mode, because the life meter shows four bars in the life meter

  • Everyone should reccomend this for new people.

  • I wonder if I'm ever gonna be able to play on a SuperNOVA machine. Colorado STILL doesn't have any...

  • Good job. Great for 2 weeks worth of work. Everything is so true in that video as well.

They should've mentioned that an arcade stage is much better than a homepad b/c of the quality of the pads when they were comparing AC vs Home. Ah well, minor tidbit.

  • Secondly, there's a section where discussion goes on about paying lots of money to play and additional items needed. I think you should have compared it moreso with a sport than a game at this point. People can't normally picture a video game as a sport so spending this money could be looked as a negative aspect for the game.

  • i could get into the whole "its a sport" "its not a sport" argument, but for the purposes of this project, its not really relevant. its a *videogame* first and foremost.

  • That's understood, it just sounded a bit negative in that aspect from when I heard it. Just my opinion I suppose.

  • I know this was composed in a limited amount of time however, a few things. If you were just listen to the audio about the explanation of the object of the game, it is very confusing for people who have never seen it.

  • thats why this is a video project, and not an audio one! ;P theres tons on screen along with the audio that give you a good idea of what the game is.

  • Well, that is true. However, I know you have video but even when it accompanies the audio it still was confusing me, and I know how to play. I know from prior experience it's difficult to actually explain the object to people.

  • Not bad for only two weeks total of work. Enjoyable to watch :)
