  • not bad, but your music sucks

  • I want to see what happens when you play "Through the fire and flames" down this bad boy...

  • OK, who else had headphones on and darn near hit the roof at 2:01? XD

  • Ray romano... dressed as john lennon... doing physics... god damn this weed is good

  • i used to build fire visualizations all the time.. but then i took an arrow to the knee

  • @jorkeuh There is a very good post on the MAKE magazine site. I would google MAKE magazine and Ruben's Tube you will find it. Or read all the comments I think there are tips below. Do not make one out of PVC. That was a dumb idea. It produces nasty fumes as it heats.

  • I need to know this in order to proceed to my project.

Is it necessary that we require a speaker for the frequencies? :/ what happens if we make some live music right next to it (for example a bit of drumming)?

I need a reply asap despite how dumb my question sound.

  • @Teetoowowman I don't really know. I do know you can get reactions at high enough sound pressures. I have been in clubs with big systems and not needed the speakers attached to see effects. But drums also do not produce very pure freqencies. You will likely see the flames move and jump. But it will be difficult to produce a sine curve with out pure frequencies and a speaker. With the right sound pressure and room I imagine you could. Report back what you find! be careful.

  • PLAY SOME DUBSTEP!!

  • Somebody needs to introduce this man dubstep.

  • the stan walker light it up song bought me here they used heaps of these in his new film clip

  • Very nice demonstration. unfortuantly, we also used PVC our first attempt. the second was with an aluminum gutter pipe, which is working fabulously. do you have a membrane on the speaker end? we got much better results with one, but our speaker is not the same size as our tube either

  • Very cool!

  • Oh my gosh! That's awesome, thank you for sharing!

  • How did you ensure that the same rate of gas came out of all the holes?

  • @dirtymussh by ensuring the tube is level and the holes are the same size. Propane is heavier than air. So if the tube is level the point of entry is less important as it falls to the bottom and propigates upward evenly. However it does still have a tendency to favor the side the gas is entering. Also the flow rate of the gas is very low. Google for the make magazine build instructions. Do not use PVC. That was stupid.

  • this is chuck norris' iTunes visualizer

  • put a blunt in eat hole and light em hahha, see what happens

  • That's fuckin epic.

  • may i kno if a ruben's tube is an open or close tube? and also how do i measure the wavelength? some sites stated that it's from a crest to the next crest while some other stated that it's from a crest to the 2nd crest. hope someone can help me on this. thanks!

  • fucking wizards always showing of...

  • This is the single coolest thing ive ever seen!

  • DRAGON FORCE!

  • visual ep like a boss.

  • Thanks to Vsauce I've been watching Ruben's Tube videos for 3 hours now.

  • You already had me at hello... and the you put on Brubeck. Awesome.

  • Interesting!, I will have to try doing that but I will port one of my tubes to see if there is a difference. But I will play sum heavy metal like AC/DC into my tubes.

I guess you need the foil tape to stop the pvc tube overheating.

  • @smoking2wheels I reccomend searching out the Make Magazine build instructions. They are very good. Don't use PVC. That was a pretty silly idea. PVC emits dangerous chemicals when heated and it worked poorly anyhow. AC/DC works very well. :)

  • You beat the Myth Busters in views.

  • Lennon lives!

  • I thought he was going to show us how to make meth

  • This would be so fucking cool for a concert.

  • I wanna hear dubstep play into that baby!

  • you, sir, are a certified badass.

  • you are a god amongst us mere mortals. very well crafted!

  • The Dave Brubeck tune is called Pick Up Sticks in case anyone cares

  • Ahhh I want this!

  • Turn on "Transcribe Audio" in the caption menu.

  • What happens if we blast some dubstep?

  • the song at the end: "Foo Fighters - I'll Stick Around" in case anyone wonders.

  • 1. Do this but a couple hundred times larger

    2. If you're in a rock band, use this as one of your pyrotechnics

    3. ??????

    4. Profit

  • Duncan?

  • Thats amazing!

  • someone should do this with dubstep... just sayin.

  • @luci558 This is literally the first thing I thought of when I realised sound affected the wavelength of the flames.

  • Now that's an ampli-fire!

  • 94 people don't like the Dave Brubeck quartet :(

  • that. was. awesome.

  • stumble

  • What would it look like with dubstep?

  • Comment removed

  • If I ever become rich, I'm going to have a giant version of this constructed at the head of a pool, and during night time pool parties I'm going to fire it up.

  • "let's try something, uh...a little more energetic"

    *silence*

    *DANANANAANANNAA*

  • Didn't know John Lennon was into physics

  • @MrHoneyman1 laugh of the day

  • @MrHoneyman1 I thought the exact same thing!!!

  • what was the 'rock' song you played in the video, i really need more music with a driving tempo like that!

  • @blavin321 i forget the name of the song but i think its off of the Foo Fighters first or second album.

  • stumbled

  • Jak zobaczyć dźwięk ;)

  • im just wondering ,how did you seal the end where you inserted the propane ?

    thanks :D

  • @darkangel1994ify I use a rubber end cap. There is a brand called fastpipe that works well. Then I can insert and seal a brass gas tubing adapter. BTW don't make one out of PVC. That was dumb. search for the make magazine tutorial. It is really good.

  • @twinrawk thank you very much your the best ,,and thanx for the info about the pvc xD

  • higher pressure makes the larger flames

  • is that a wig u got on your dome

  • "dancing flames" indeed.

  • VISUAL NODES AND ANTI NODES! WAY COOL!

  • that's effing awesome

  • lol My name is Ruben

  • @superman4131 mine too lol

  • i always knew john lennon was alive and doing crazy shit like this

  • btw: it's called Rubens' Tube.

  • So, I made one and failed. Not completely but pretty close.

2" PVC, about 100 small but not too small holes, foil tape, approx 5 1/2 feet long.

    2" Thrift Store Computer Speaker.

Gas Station Propane Tank (I think this is my problem?).

There doesn't seem to be any pressure. On a level surface, I only get 1/2 inch to 1 inch flames that react to audio but only go half way down the pipe. Nothing like the spectacular reactions on youtube. Thoughts?

  • @smokeweedinprotest @smokeweedinprotest I would refer you to the makezine dot com tutorial. search on their site I have stopped making PVC tubes. PVC emits dangerous fumes when heated. I think your holes may be big. 1/16" spaced 1/2" apart works well. High volume on the sound will often produce a "half tube" effect. Your tank is probably not the problem. But first goto the tutorial and rebuild usig metal. Or watch makezine live tomorrow at 9PM eastern and ask questions live. :)

  • @twinrawk Metal is probably more resonant anyway. Did you tune the tube's fundamental frequency to a commonly used note though? I feel it would produce the best results.

  • is there any scale to which this behavior will not take place? for instance: if a tube was built to scale around an 8" speaker, would the size of the device prevent it from demonstrating these properties?

  • @pleckles I have seen 8" Ruben's Tube but the effect is roughly the same. You are just dealing with more gas. But you won't really get a more pronounced effect. Gas pressure, air pressure and sound pressure dictate the height of the flames more than anything. I find 3" tubing works better and less gas is safer. You can fashion a reducer and use your 8" speaker using a couple pieces of wood with to diffenerent diameters cut out.

  • haha that's funny! so cool :)

  • Why does this seem to be spectral? As the rock music is quietened the middle was is the last section to remain, as you'd expect from desktop speakers if it was spectral.

  • Pro.

  • ok, WHY should someone dislike it? :X :-O

  • I dig it

  • this is way too cool

  • Thats so awesome making music using fire :D

  • thats so awesome! Im in physics in college now and this really puts some things in class into context!!! Thank you!!

  • that is freakin sweet and i love PROPANE OMFG

  • The sounds comes from the left hand side ?

  • BAMF

  • this guy REALLY do look like a physicist, lol

  • OMFG! Thats so fucking epic!!

  • Hey we have a John Lennon right there !! haha

  • yaaaay!!! fire!!! :D ...looks like it needs a warning label or two lol

  • that was awesome =]

  • WOW, I AM REALLY IMPRESSED LOL.

  • Can someone please tell me what foo fighters' song that is? I can't put my finger on it and it's driving me nuts!

  • @ThcPatient It's 'I'll Stick Around' from the first self titled album, , released around '95. It's great and pretty much everything's played by Dave Grohl!

  • kralju, prekida ti. . . :P

  • COOL!

  • haha wooow im learning this in math.. and to demonstrate this my math teacher told me to see this wich is pretty kool i didnt know mathmatics could come a long way xD

  • soooo cooool !!!! :D

  • @twinrawk i think sgohara fears your hair-mustache-glasses combo near her children, not the fire. :D

  • I want one =(

  • I wonder could I turn this tube into a house decoration

  • 2:43 that little flame is trying it's hardest to keep dancing...

  • Is there any website that has more inventions?

    [person]'s [discovery]

I know a few inventions but im sure theres thousands id be interested in that i havent seen. Even a list is good, I can look stuff up.

  • wow dud! you should develop that and make it more big!

  • wow this is amazing! you guys amaze me!

  • What song is that at 2:02?

  • Thanks for the video

  • Play some QUEEN on that Ruben's Tube!... =3

  • blast some dubstep in that shit..

  • @lifesgood7777 *dubshit

  • Throw some kid cudi through that mufuckin tube and youll get some real trippy shiiit

  • @sgohara children should always be kept a safe distance from fire. Only adults who are comfortable with lab saftey procedures, propane and the possibility of getting seriously burned or worse should play with Ruben's Tubes. The rest should enjoy the many examples on youTube from the safe distance of the interweb.

  • @twinrawk dont be so boreing its cool and so what if a child gets burned its not like one child geting burnt will make any difernce when 100's of children die evry day from desies stravation and other things i think any child who can aford to do this should think about how lucky they are and then maybe they wont do it

  • @sgohara

A Ruben's tube is a physic's experiment. I understand your concern for the well being of your children but, you can not protect them all the time. You can't sheild them from getting hurt or being harmed all of the time. Yes you can teach them safty and practice proper dicipline to compact the teachings but you can't say "Oh I'm not going to let my children near a Ruben's Tube because their is fire involved" that's just silly. This could be something that is included in their education.

  • @sgohara I'd love my children(when I become older and have kids) to be exposed to the world of science, from a safe distance of course. I think science is fascinating and there are so many things we do not know yet. I am also Christian and want my future children to appreciate the way God made our universe. If you don't mind if you are not Christian do not get into an argument with me about my faith because I find that highly irritating.

  • awesome!

  • FUCK YEAH BRUBECK

  • were do you get a speaker that fits the pipe?

  • @wowaddictednerd Do it the other way round : find a pipe that fits the speaker.

  • @wowaddictednerd I find that old computer speakers from good will are a good source of 3" speakers. Plus they come with and amp and are cheap. Some have oval speakers, so you may go through a few until you find the right brand. Then buy a few, they blow out really easy.

  • @wowaddictednerd if u cant find a 3" speaker you can also use a 6" speaker and use a PVC reducer from 6" to 3" and also it would also help flames escaping through the leakages of the speaker and this would happen because with the reducer it is further away from the open flames which would make it harder to ignite the escaping gas through the speaker. and also wrap it on using teflon tape it stops it from leaking

  • Would fit in a rock party perfectly!

  • awesome!

  • I could swear that at 2:26 he says 'Let's drop some ACID and have some fun'

  • @DuncanDonuts3 'turn off the gas'

  • 'try something a little more energetic!'

  • loool better than winamp equalizer animation :DDD

  • @jeka100 @jeka100 this apparatus published in 1905 help in part to proove out the body of mathmatics that allowed the algorithmic description of waveforms enabling digital music. In spirit you are looking at the first iPod. Other such useless experiments will eventually create your space ship. Energy however is never free because in this household we obey the laws of thermodynamics.

  • @twinrawk agreed; and more so how about equalization, spectral analysis, FFTs, vocoding, ADC/DACs, synthesis; basically anything that has to do with digital music today.
