She was dragged off to an asylum when Fluttershy was just a filly, babbling about invisible dragons that were trying to get into the house. Her last words to her daughter were, "YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE ME!" Then the mental hospital killed her with shock treatments, and that's why Fluttershy is the way she is.

@Milomia9: Actually, "Pony Psychology" is good. We know something horrible had to have happened to Fluttershy. Everything about her personality screams it. That explanation has the advantage of being rated "G," or "PG" at worst, although it is pretty much a "Bambi's Mom" kind of scenario. It would horrify little kids, but not even Disney shies away from that.

It's no worse that Simba nuzzling his father's dead body. The first time I saw "The Lion King," I was like, "This thing is rated G?"

Pinkie lost it in "Party of One," Fluttershy lost it in this ("The Best Night Ever") and Twilight finally lost it in "Lesson Zero," but the other three didn't really overreact. Rarity was publicly humiliated and almost lost her career, Rainbow Dash had a bad episode of stage fright and Applejack was just sleep deprived. Their behavior was fairly normal under the circumstances. But yeah, Pinkie, Fluttershy and Twilight really do seem to have issues.

@mysticicedragon: Applejack stays nice. She just gets sleep deprived in “Applebuck Season" because her brother gets injured and she thinks she can take on the harvest all by herself. Its depiction of sleep deprivation is BEAUTIFUL, but she doesn't really get crazy. If you call that nuts, I've been exactly that kind of nuts. Everyone who has ever pushed themselves to finish a job has been there.

The craziest thing she did was taking on the job in the first place.
