I think the creators made it clear through Sephiroth's inquisitions, previous knowledge, and facial expressions that he would've found out either from another source or by himself. Zack wasn't the cause so much as a catalyst at best.

Actually, is really not all Zack's fault, after that Seph asks something like: "Am I a human begin?" then another voice says: "No such luck, you are a monster" which is Genesis who appears trowing two firas to both Seph, who easily deflects it and Zack who gets knocked down; Then he tells Seph the 'most-not-wanted-true'.

After that even through Seph says he does not care if it's true or not, he closes himself on the basement of a deserted Shin-Ra manor near there, where he discovers the true.
