Yes, I still have the WR-300 as my primary weather alert in the house. It probably is starting to show its age, the statement light will light up and stay on for extended periods of time for no reason. Otherwise, I'm glad I still have it. Thanks to everyone for their comments.
i actually would rather have one of these than the 12-262 i have, because the alert is a helluva lot easier to live with. the 12-262 sounds for 10 seconds straight which gets to be a little too much when you're sitting in the room with it. drives my boyfriend nuts.
I got this about 2 days ago. I can't believe that it says it won't sound the alarm for things such as tornado warnings, chemical hazards, evacuation notices etc.
I think that this is a GREAT video. I really want to get the wr-300. I have the wr-100 and the radioshack 12-262 and a weather radio scanner, and 6 walkie talkies.
@heatcats hah, god damn. there was a video up not too long ago where a guy had about 5 weather radios including an older Realistic model with the actual siren on it. he had them all plugged in and recorded the weekly test. sounded like all holy hell!
Probably the most reliable unit on the market. I love mine. I also have one of the vintage Oregon Scientific models (seen on my page), but it's very inferior to this model.
@ELTIGREROCKS10NEW I have both the WR-100 and the WR-300. I highly recommend the WR-300 because you can program it for messages that you don't care to hear (except for tornado warnings which it doesn't allow you to program off). That way it doesn't wake you up in the middle of the night for high-wind warnings or small craft warnings.
@ELTIGREROCKS10NEW : The NWS in Charleston, WV does use the EAS for high wind warnings and some special weather statements. Each NWS decides which alerts to tone alert outside weekly tests, tornado, severe t-storm and flash flood watches and warnings.
Bought one of these radios last month, $49.60 from amazon w/free ship. It's worked once or twice last month but tonight, tornados warnings all arounds us, no warning. I have the correct (clear) channel set, set up for alert, all counties, alert on, but no warning at all. I watched the warning on out local TV station, and when turned on weather radio, it's in the middle of warning detail. I'm starting to doubt my radio purchace.
This one clearly states in the manual that it won't sound for a tornado warning.
There is a way (I did it) to set it to sound off, you have to go to "Create Alert" then type in TOR for the 3-code thing, then type TORNADO for the full name. Then it will ask if it is a WATCH, WARNING, or ADVISORY. Selece WARNING, and it will come up as an advisory, but it works.
I think we are all misunderstanding the manual. I believe they are trying to say that for all of the wwa's with an * next to it, you could change the alert feature. If there is not an * next to the alert, it will always go off. I noticed the ones without an * were very serious like a tornado warning or avalanche warning so it will always alert you for them. The less urgent ones, you can set it to do differently. My 2 and a half cents.
@WhelenVTXR2 you wont be able to disable tornado warnings at all. If the alert is marked with a *, then it is permanently enabled. I have a WR-300 & that is what it means including the Radio Shack Radios
I believe that everyone is hearing a different weather band radio in a separate part of the house. Sorry for the overlap. My intention was to only put some info on weather radio on youtube.
To those who commented on an actual voice being used. I'm not old, but doesn't anyone remember when these broadcasts were 100% human voice? I DO!!! The change to automated voice was only in 1997 when the first male voice was broadcast.
I do not hear a TV's EAS in the background...but another radio tuned to the same frequency that is listening for when to turn the camera on!
Oh, by the way, what was the noise right before they started talking. Do you guys think it was MIC feedback, or the phone line getting activated at the tower site?
Thanks for the comments. NWS Duluth gives their tests via voice, and while I'm not 100% sure, I believe it is give the interns some experience of how it was done in the past.
SAME codes will continue to break counties and parishes down into smaller parcels, allowing us to program our radios for locations closer to home. In addition, the new polygon warning system will warn of severe weather to smaller geographical locations.
I have the exact same model of radio here in Dallas, Texas. Station KEC-55 is done all by computer-generated voices as well. I haven't heard this one screw up on anything though and I hear this thing go off a LOT during the spring months. Also, the weekly tests here are done twice on Wednesday - once at 10 AM and once at 6 PM.
Wow, yours does it by voice, not by computer voice (maybe Speakonia)? Here in Cincinnati, KIH-42 does it all computer-controlled. Occasionally, it screws up; one time, in the middle of a forecast, the voice just randomly said, "Bring Bring!" Occasionally, if one is lucky, they can hear a voice that sounds like Schwarzenegger.
The radio sure delays when the speacial receiver tones activate. That makes me nervous about some of these radios. I thought it was cool how the tones from the alarm slowed a bit before turning to speaker.
great weather radio just bought one back in dec 07. warned me a good 30 mins before a severe thunder storm and tornado warning Here a couple weeks ago. People who watch this need to invest in this radio it may save your life. there are little cifficult to program you will have to read the Manuel a couple of times.:)

Well it isnt a warning nor a watch so therefore it must be an advisory.

What is the point in buying this particular "weather ALERT" radio if it will not sound for a tornado warning? seems like a waste of money for me.

I used to have this but I recently gave it to my brother when he moved to Texas. It does go off for tornado warnings.

No, it clearly states in the manual that it will sound for tornado warning. Read it again.
I sent the radio back to Midland and had a replacement within 4 days, the new one works perfect.

Exact words:
Tornado Warning | On*
*=not to sound, but will pop up with a yellow LED light, and message.
WhelenVTXR2 2 years ago
I stand corrected. Sorry, I should have read the manual a little better.

It is alright.
PS: Everyone, if you have the volume up loud enough at the beginning, you'll be able to hear the SAME tones.
