@MrBagginsEsq It was an ingenious invention indeed during the time it came out, it only became "primitive" to people when more advanced mechanisms were invented.
@KingOfNormans I wouldn't bet my life on any object. Rather use a sword, never jams, never runs out of ammo. Has a problem with range though, bout as far as you can hurl it.
If only I had a smidge of the knowledge that Garry does about historical guns I'd be doing alright. It took me much trial and error to hammer out a proficent working knowledge of my hawkin style caplock, but eventually I was cleanly taking deer and black bears with it during the season. I think he's a reincarnated buffalo hunter myself, or maybe wild bill come back from the grave...hehe.
Nice video, I think he put too much emphasis on how reliable flintlocks were. They really are not as reliable as he makes them sound. Yes they are definitely more reliable than a matchlock or a wheel lock, but that's not saying much. I'm an F&I and Rev War reenactor so I get to use flintlocks all the time... they're still a lot of fun to shoot though if you can get it to actually do what you want it to :)
I bet this guy actually keeps 30 paper wrapped cartridges ready in that knap sack for a SHTF situation.

A lot of people consider the flintlock "primitive" I say it was ingenious!

"People have been using flint and steel to start fires, almost back to Roman times".
Almost?
Something tells me they'd been doing it for a longer time than that....

I respectfully disagree about calling a weapon with a 20% misfire rate "reliable"
KingOfNormans 10 months ago
@KingOfNormans That's an 80% chance of it firing.

@XXGDUBSXX Would you bet your life on it? :D

@XXGDUBSXX 30% chance is more plausable.
ShawnC15 7 months ago
@ShawnC15 Then where did the other 50% go? Or are you talking about it's misfire rate and if so what is your source for that percentage?

What he meant was how reliable they were in their time. And hell, they were the best handheld ranged weapons anywhere during the 1800s.
NiqueJB 1 year ago
@NiqueJB Actually, caplocks were more reliable and had a faster rate of fire.
