New Year's Eve of my senior year, December 31, 1964. It was the midnight show at the Salem Theater in Salem, IL, and a group of 8-10 of us went to see it. It Blew me away!
I remember watching it on TV when I was I guess 14 or 15 It was great for the time that for sure although living in NY I saw James Brown at the Apollo and I saw the Who as second billing for Wislon Pickett and Cream unknown to me at the time as 3rd or 4th billing also Mitch Ryder shared the top star with Wilson Picked This was a Murray the K show in and old huge 1930 move theatre on the east side around 47th st The Who were already breaking guitars
This looks pretty good. It was shot on some very high tech equipment for its day. There is a Wiki entry you can check out. Out of curiosity, I wonder why the Rolling Stones were attributed as a "Mersey Beat" group?
I am old enough to have seen the TAMI movie at a Drive-In in 1965...in those days it took several months for movies to get to the drive-in. I had a new 1965 Mustang Convertable...and to make everyone really crazy, the sticker price (which I still have was $2,918.00
This is the best. One thing : Why does the announcer say The Beach Boys sing "Surfin'USA, "I Get Around" and "Surfer Girl" ? They also do " Dance, Dance, Dance" This ad says restored to full length. So are there all 4 BB songs or not on this DVD ? thanks
I know they only show a condensed version on TV but the full show will be on the DVD I ordered - it was just the fact that I paid $90 (I know some of it is a subscription to the channel) but usually it means that the DVD is unavailable to the general public so was a little surprised to see it was on general sale already for a lot less!!
After having to live with bootlegs of this for 35 years, it will be great to have an official release of this. Much Music showed a real good quality letterboxed copy of this in the 80s, but this looks fantastic.
@yourtubesteak I taped the version that appeared on Much Music (on Beta, @*#&!). That version ended with James Brown's godhead set. Sherman's burning down Atlanta was nuthin' compared to JB's scorching of the Santa Monica Civic. I'm amazed that the Stones' had the guts to go out and do their set, but they went out and did alright. This flick is the only thing on earth that ever convinced me I was born twenty years too late.
It will be released the 23rd of this month.Amazon is taking pre orders at just 14 bux. I was heavy Metal before it was cool,I saw this movie at the Granada Theatre in Kansas City back in 64.James Brown still leaves me breathless today with this performance.Talk about entertainment. This is a Must have video.
@koolbossjock I didn't realise that it was being released for sale - it was just shown on WNED-TV last night in their fundraising week and I ordered it for $90!!! thinking that would be the only way to get a copy !
@arickett68 The PBS version shown on tv is not the complete TAMI Show. Most of the acts' performances were edited (cut out). The Collector's Edition being released today has the complete performances by the artists.
You caught that ref about Lennon, too, jfab...lol. I bet the producers of the show would've killed to get the Beatles, but then again the venue would have been demolished by screaming fans before the concert even started. Still an amazing document of a seminal time in rock-pop history.
Damn. The full concert, and in high enough resolution that I can actually see who's performing. Enough to retire my VHS copy. Even the James Brown cape stuff (cut from VHS version)!

TAMI is a real gem of rock n' roll history. It almost seems surreal at the end when all the performers are on stage together

Even back then American knowledge was VERY poor!
The Rolling Stones are NOT "Mersey Beat"!
That groan out the way, it do look a GREAT collection.

Lesley Gore was TOPS in the TAMI Show! Even the commentary in the DVD states this.

I was a kid working at my dad's store in Santa Monica when this happened, only about a 5 minute walk to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
My dad wouldn't let me go, and I'm still mad about it!
